Yes yes yes. You don't even have to buy the whole humidifier. I bought the little plug in Vicks things. They worked amazingly, and even helped me quit smoking!!
Good luck!
Hello, My son is coughing again, Someone mentioned a "Steam Air Humidifer" will that help coughing and congestion? Thanks M.

Yes. If it ever gets too bad - like having trouble breathing - so can putting him in the bathroom (not the shower) and running the shower on the hottest setting. Close the door and allow him to breath in the humid air. It will calm the attack and loosen up any congestion. Vicks will help too - or eucalyptus oil mixed in water on a rag over nose or in steaming water on stove.
Hey M.,
Both my kids use a cold water humidifier and it works wonderfully! Make sure it's cold water as hot will grow bacteria etc. My neighbor's baby was really congested and I gave her one of ours to use. She was so happy it worked and her little one was able to sleep.

Hi M.!
My 8 month old son was sick a few weeks ago, and I used a cold water humidifier, and it really helped. He slept a lot longer with the humidifier on also.
Good luck!

You could try the old trick of making a tent of a towel and putting this over his head and a steaming bowl of water and letting him breathe in the steam for 5-10 minutes. However, because he's only 5 he might not like this. Sitting in a steamy bathroom is also good. At least in there he can play or look at books. Drawing on a steamy mirror is also fun. Use the smallest bathroom for this for maximum steam.
Our pediatrician recommended a cool mist humidifier for the Houston area because of mold. We bought a Honeywell programable humidifier and run it at night (mostly during winter months when it's so dry inside). Replacement filters can be bought online at discount prices (www.rpsproducts.com). Just make sure you clean it out regularly. Additives can be used to keep it mold free.
Best wishes.
I have a cool mist humidifier for my daughter and that seems to work for her. I have been told that cool mist are safer to have in childrens rooms rather than warm mist so keep that in mind when shopping.
YES it will help, however because steam is hot you will need to be careful. You might give it a try before buying anything first close off bathroom and run the shower on HOT to steam the bathroom see if it does help. Hope that he gets better soon. You might need to remember that mold can also grow where it is warm and damp for long periods of time.
I like to use a Vaporizer because I've heard that humidifiers are high maintainance and there's a filter that has to be cleaned after each use or every so often.
So, yes a vaporizer or humidifier which ever you choose will help with cough and congestion... so will Vicks! It does wonders...
Cool mists humidifiers are better, as others have written. If your son coughs a lot, it may be useful to have an allergy test run on him. My son turned out to be allergic to indoor molds and making the room more moist only increased the molds!
Oh, we moved here from Ohio last year. I hope you enjoy Texas!! The summers are hot, but the winters are nice.
Not sure if you had heard of this or not but if you put Vicks vapour rub on your sons feet and then have him keep his socks on...This should help and resolve things quicker than the warm mist humdifier. (My personal experience with 3 yr old son is humidifier made things worse, rather than better.) Now this also depends on what part of Tx you have moved too...I live outside of Austin, Tx!!
I just went through this with my little one, and I tried EVERYTHING every night, and she still coughed for about a week. I, honestly don't think anything works since you can't really give meds, just time! :( I'm sorry. He'll get better soon!
When mine are coughing because of a cold I put vicks on their chest and on their feet! A respitory therapist told me to do this and it worked. They slept well, no coughing, and no other meds!!
I switched from a warm mist humidifier to a cool mist. I'd also heard that more bacteria grow with the warmer humidifiers than the cool mist. We started using it about two years ago when my son got real sick. Any time we don't use it, he tends to get sick again. Just try to keep it as clean as you can. I unscrewed mine recently and took it apart to clean the places you can't usually clean, and I was pretty disgusted. I'll definitely be taking it apart more often.
