My one yr. old is miserable with allergies i believe. He is rubbing his eye, runny nose, dark puffy eyes, and seems to be accompanied by a slight sore throat. I have Pediatex from his last Drs appt, but it doesnt seem to be helping this time. Is there anything other than Benedryl OTC that i can get to give him so maybe both he and I can get a little rest 2night. I have Claritin and Zyrtec but i'm not sure if i can give those to him or not. Any suggestions would be great. Thanks, Chas

I agree with Denise. Anything to help with this should be cleared with you doctor for safety. Saline is ok but allergy meds for a one year old is risky without professional advise.

I would not give a O. year old ANYTHING like that without specific dosage instructions from your doctor. Saline solution could clear his nose and you can use it as often as you like. A cool mist humidifier might help a bit too. If he is stuffy & congested, prop up his crib on thick books so his head is elevated at night. Hope he feels better soon.

My 15 month old has been on Zyrtec since he was 6 months old. The doctor put him on 1/4 of a teaspoon and then at about a year we moved up to 1/2. If you are uncomfortable just giving it to him then call your doctor's office and just talk to the nurse. They should be able to tell you. Both my boys have been on Zyrtec everynight and it's a life saver!!! Good Luck!

My daughter's pediatrician put her on 1/2 tsp children's Zyrtec daily at 7 months. So it's safe, but I'd definitely clear it with your baby's Dr. You shouldn't give Zyrtec with Benadryl, and I'm not sure about Claritin or Pediatex.
Good luck!!!

Are his secretions clear or green/yellow? If they are clear, it is most likely allergies and Benadryl or Zyrtec will work great. If they are green/yellow, it is likely a virus or infection and antihistamines should not be given. Call your pediatricians office and ask for the doses for these meds. Most offices will give some advice over the phone. Like Rachel, my oldest son was started on Zyrtec when he was 6 months old. He took a 1/2 tsp at bedtime at 12 months (will make him sleepy). I also put a cool mist humidifier in his room and a Pedicare mentholated plug in. Give him some Tylenol every 4-6 hours as well just to make him feel better. Offer plenty of fluids and his fave foods. Put a little Vaseline on his raw little nose. I hope your little guy feels better soon!

I have cared for children for over 30 years, so you can imagine how much meds I have given. I noticed most of the prescription meds are not very effective. For allergy symptoms, you can not beat benadryl. Its best not to let it run out though. Most Dr.s do not recommend Benadryl at 12 months, I do and would surely give it to my grandchildren. Good Luck!! IT WORKS! P. F.
