Siberian Cat Breed and Allergies

not sure about the siberians, the allergies are usually due to the dander and the undercoats of the cats. I do know that devon rex and cornish rex cats have no undercoats, and very little dander. I have a friend who got a devon, and she hasn't had any problems with her allergies. They are very affectionate cats, and lots of fun. They are a lot smaller than a siberian. Usually, you want to stay away from a long haired cat if you have allergies. You might find a breeder and talk to them about the siberians, they would be your best source of info.

Just as a side note, in reference to another response-- if you get a solid white cat, have its hearing checked. If the cat is all white with blue eyes, it is more likely to be deaf. If it has one blue eye, it is probably deaf in the ear closest to the blue eye. There are occasions where a blue eyed white cat has complete hearing, but that is not the norm. Just be aware of it, and be able to understand--also, just because it may be deaf, does not mean that it can't be a great pet!!

I just bought a Siberian cat for my mother a few months ago. She is also allergic to dogs and cats and was worried about getting an animal, but She absolutely LOVES her new cat! She is not having any problems with her allergies at all. They do eat a different kind of food that mom had to special order and mix with raw turkey. She got her cat from a breeder in Tenn. and drove all the way there to get it. Thats what the breeder feeds her cats and they are all very healthy!

Hi A.--How have you been doing in your search for a cat? I am not familiar with the Siberian and fortunately, we are not allergic to most things. I'm not sure that we would have not gotten one if we were allergic.

I have a question for you though. Does your family suffer from other kinds of allergies? Did you know that allergies are a result of the immune system not functioning properly and being sensitive to something that it doesn't have to be sensitive to?

Hello. I understand the need/want to have an animal, but my advice is: if you have allergies, DON'T open the floodgates. You won't want to get rid of the animal once it's in your home. I am allergic to cats, and now I find out my daighter is too. We got two cats when she was very young. It's not worth it to compromise the immune system, and have their little, growing bodies trying to adjust and compensate for the allergy. Keep your house clean, and visit some animals!!

This has been a battle in my sisters home for over 20 years. Her husband has always been severly allergic and then once they had kids they discovered one of their sons had difficulty with cats. However, my sister is and always has been a huge fan of cats. They used to use drops in the cat food which actually did help, so you could look at that, but my sister kept plugging away and researching and saw somewhere that something about solid white cats not creating allergy problems. She decided to try it out and now has two solid white cats, one long fur and one short fur, and the two "boys" allergies have not acted up.
