Should I Give up on This Job Prospect?

Hi, I wonder if you could give me your impression of this.
I applied for a job about a month ago. An HR person contacted me right away to schedule a phone screening. I went through that, and the HR person said she would update me on the process (regardless of if they have made a decision or not) that Friday or early the next week. Now, it has been about a month from the phone interview but I have not heard anything. I emailed the HR person about a week and a half ago inquirying the status. I also left a phone message a couple of days ago -- no response!

Do you think I should just give up? My common sense tells me so, but I think it is so strange that the person said she'd let me know regardless of the decision but I've heard nothing. With other places, I've also always heard back when I contacted them and inquired about the status, even if I didn't make the selection.

I'm confused. I'd like to think positive, so I keep thinking, oh, maybe they've been very busy, the person or the hiring manager has been on vacation... but I would think they can at least let me know that they have been busy and have not been able to make a decision, etc.? It's a job that I am really excited about, so I'm having trouble getting myself interested in other jobs as long as this job still is a "possibility." I would appreciate your impression based on my description of the situation. Thank you!

So What Happened?

Thank you for your honest comments! Yes, it is hard to accept that I'm not getting the job, but I should start actively looking for other jobs. I'll keep in mind that they may be just beling slow, but even then, it seems like they may be in the middle of persuing other candidates or at least they're not eager to get me. Karen, it's good to hear from a recruiter's perspective that I probably should not follow up with them again.

Again,thanks!

My hubby was out of work for a year. In that time I learned that 99% of the HR people just don't give a hoot about people anymore. They are oftentimes rude and condescending and maybe 1 out of 100 actually DO get back to you when they say they will, or at all. I'm sure they come across all sorts of people as job applicants, but they aren't ALL crummy prospects, so I don't know why they have the attitude, but they do.

I wouldn't stop pursuing other avenues, but sometimes things take longer than expected. In all reality, though, if you were the "clear front runner" you would have heard by now. Get those resumes back out!

It's rude for the HR person not to return you calls and emails, but they typically cannot give you info until the candidate has "accepted" the offer.

I would give that prospect up. Don't worry, there's a job out there with your name on it. I think nowadays with so many unemployed people, companies can be very selective on who they hire and basic professionalism like returning calls, goes out the door. Sign of the times:(

The job game is largely slanted. Of course they're going to tell you "they'll let you know" but they often don't. I was talking to a friend this morning (single mom of 3, desperately needs a j-o-b) and she says her last 3 interviews have been for positions which were ALREADY filled! It seems your time as a job seeker is worth nothing and employers just don't care. Sorry.
I would at least call & speak to a person and express yourself.

Even though they said they'd get back to you by a certain day, it's pretty common for those days to come and go. I used to be a recruiter and it was quite common for hiring managers to take longer than they said they would (even though they'd be breathing down my neck to hire someone).

That said, the HR person should at least have returned your phone call and email by now. From the recruiter's point of view, you shouldn't call or email anymore. No matter how eager and excited you are, I would (as a recruiter), find it annoying to keep hearing from the same person. She should reply, but if not, it's probably a sign that the company is not as well run as it should be and there would be a lot of frustration if you ended up working there.

I'd start looking for something else, and keep an open mind. I know you're excited about this one, but I think you should move on. I'm sorry.
