Should I File an Official Complaint About My Baby's Daycare?

I've been really upset at what's been going on at my daughter's daycare. But yesterday was the last straw. I had considered reporting the daycare to the city but had figured since my daughter is starting in a new daycare in two weeks, I wouldn't bother. I'm hoping you can help me out here. I had always liked the people (a husband and wife team with two helpers) who run the daycare, although they do have a bit of a brusque manner and do things their way. But then I started noticing that junk food was being served (cheese puffs, licorice, Dunkin Donuts, etc). I consoled myself that I would serve my daughter healthy dinners. But then one day I picked up my daughter and realized something was wrong with her arm. Come to find out she had dislocated her elbow. When I called the daycare as soon as I noticed the problem, they said they didn't know anything about it and were defensive, suggesting it happened after I left the daycare. I was upset but figured accidents happen. Then I saw the woman feeding Cheerios with milk to several children with the same bowl and spoon. I was shocked and it took me until the next day to ask her to please make sure Luna has her own spoon and bowl in the future (especially considering how sick she's been). At first she actually denied she did it! Then yesterday I brought her home and discovered she had a bite mark on her hand from another child. My husband called them and they said they didn't know anything about it. There were more defensive excuses. I'm beside myself. I understand that there will be accidents sometimes but to not know makes me think there's not adequate supervision. Should I report them? I realize that we're leaving soon enough (7 more days!) so why bother. But maybe it would help the children there now to report them. I'm confused. Help!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks so much for all the heartfelt messages. I got the courage to call on Friday and the city agency was very concerned and said they'd be sending someone to the house on Monday. !! So I've managed to get my daughter set up with the new daycare starting Monday as well so there's no awkward moments. Now I just have to be brave and call them to say Luna is not coming back. I want to be able to say it's because they don't provide a safe environment for the children. Hopefully I will. Thanks again.

Oh C......report away!!! These are horrible & disgusting conditions for any child to be in. There is no excuse on the feeding of junk food, that's just laziness. I know its hard to want to get involved and you are leaving, etc....but think of the other parents that have no clue of what's going on. Perhaps you can get together with those other parents and just remove your children altogether. I suggest you consult a lawyer as far as your daughters injuries. This is some serious stuff. I wish you luck with it.

Hi C.,

I think you should defenitly report them. What they have been doing is really discusting, irresponsible, and just not safe. Even tho you áre leaving that daycare, like you said you will be helping the other children. This is one of the reasons y I am so ify about putting my daugter in daycare so young, espcially since she is still in diapers but i know daycare is the only option for alot of families and they should be safe and a place you can trust. I think you will only be doing good if you report them. Good luck and let us kno how it goes if you decide to do it.

You must , must report you will be helping the rest of the kids. They are the victims.

I am reading this 4 months later but I do hope you have reported this place already. You could be preventing other children from getting hurt or even worse.

Please file a complaint as soon as possible. I sure would like to know if my children were being taken care in this manner. You will be doing someone a favor.
