I had my hair that short when back when I was skinny!!
I used bedhead products on mine, they had a great spiking gel and a stiff putty/pomade that worked well too...

There is a line of products sold at the grocery stores, drug stores, and walmart type stores. It is called Got 2 Be. The Got 2 Be Glued (spiking glue) works wonderfully well. Just don't try to comb or brush it out, you can't. It does wash out easily. This is the stiffest stuff I have ever used and I like it. Their hairspray is really stiff also.
You can soften it up with the heat of a hair dryer if you need to re-work it without washing.
Try bedhead products.
Good luck and God Bless
Hey, Spikes are fun, I wore them for years, here is my trick. I would liberally gel my towel dried hair then while it is still wet, soak it down with hair spray. No real expensive stuff the cheap stuff works great in this formula. Together these create a glue that stays till you break it, literally. Have fun with the spikes, I hope to join some time again in the future; my hair is about fifteen inches down my back now. J. M
I used Got 2 B Glued or Garnier Nutrisse's Fiber Gum to spike my son's 3" mohawk, and I also use them on my own hair. Make sure your hair is damp when you use them. With my son's hair in [articular, I'd use the product then blast it with the hairdryer on a cool setting to set the style, and finish with a spritz of hairspray. I have short hair and blow dry it in the direction I want it to spike before actually styling it - but I spike the back of my hair. Mine is razor cut and the texture and the way it's cut helps it naturally spike up a bit, too.
I have used GF Bold It! Power Putty Ultra Strong(which I actually got on clearance from Walmart for 25 cents, yes $.25... ) and LA Looks Sport Fiber Paste Extreme Hold. THE BEST hair spray I have ever used is Freeze It! Mega Freeze. It comes in a gold can. My daughter cheered and she had to have her hair pulled back and smoothed and I used this stuff. She always complained at the end of the day because it would take her a while to wash her hair to get it out! But, her hair never moved and her hair piece never came out!
try fiber by crew
good luck
You might want to check out styling wax. It's thick so you don't have to use much but it's great for short hair. Just takes some getting used to. Also Pantene has a great texturizing line of products that work pretty well if you use them right.
You probably need something of thicker consistancy than the gel. Try a wax product. Make sure to get it in the root or next to the scalp and then out.
hair glue and/or molding wax have always worked for my son....the Got2BGlue stuff is great, and molding wax comes in a container like putty or can come as a spray
Try Joico Ice hair gel. You can only get this from salons or Trade Secret type of stores, but it will really hold a spike! Also, start from the roots up b/c if you just plop it right on top of your head it will weigh the hair down. You could also mix with a root pump- do the root pump 1st then apply the gel. Big Sexy makes a good root pump.
I am a licensed hair stylist and these are products I have personally used. Good luck!
It will be harder to spike if you have natural curl.
Exactly what kind of spikes are you after?
Try applying product, like a modeling paste (for hair of course!) holding the spike where you want it with one hand and zapping it with the hair dryer.
There is always the classic, Aqua net Super hold plus your blow dryer.
In collage we used slightly watered down Elmer's glue to hold our liberty spikes. They were magnificent in that very 80's Punk kind of way. Ha Ha Ha
Geez, those were the days...
Spiker in the ICE hair line by JOICO is an excellent product. All the ICE products are great!!! They used this in the salon I used to work in, and, was constantly selling-out of it. http://www.joico.com/product/i-c-e
Just the other day, at the Dollar Tree of all places, I finally found a product that will keep my son's hair spiked. Loreal Studio Line Mega Glue keeps my 6 year old's hair spiked ALL day! Actually, we got home late the other night & he went straight to bed & when he got up the next morning, all he had to do was lift it in a few places & it looked like it had just been styled. If you can find it at a Dollar Tree near you, I highly recommend trying it...at only $1.00, you can't beat it!
Aveda, not sure of the exact name, it looks like a deodarant stick and it is thick and really holds it. You can get at an upper class salon that uses Aveda. Just go to an upper class salon and ask them, Aveda is pricey though. You can also use a styling gel that claims to be a strong hold and then on top of that, also use hairspray to hold that! have fun!
Hi, C.,
An older product it may be, but, my mother always used DIPPITY DO on my sisters hard to manage hair
Good luck

Pomade or hair paste. The good stuff feels like toothpaste a first but if you work it around in your hands for a few seconds the texture will loosen and is great for really short hair styles, finish with hairspray. And remember, a little goes a long way!
Bed Head Stick- I used to have short spikey hair and this stuff is awesome! It comes in a stick that is packaged similar to push up glue.
try hair putty or wax
hi, i have really short hair too. i wash it then towel dry it. not dry. put some herbal essences mousse extra hold on it then spray it real good with herbal essences extra hold set me up hair spray. brush done. start to finish maybe 10 min. good luck will stay all day. the next day all i have to do is wet my hands and get my hair a little wet. run a brush kindof through it and spray lightly. done again. good luck. like my short hair. I use bedhead for my son's hair to get it to spike
My son used Got2B Glued and it worked really well for him. There is also a product by Iden called Cement Glue for extreme texturizing and spiking but never tried that one.
Root lifter and hair wax.
I have short hair but I do not need my hair to spike but I have four daughters with very short hair I use lot hair spray to spike my daughters very short hair
I used to have short hair, and the only thing that worked for me was Paul Mitchell Hair Wax... you only need just a very little, and sometimes a finishing spray with some hairspray but the Wax worked like a charm!
There are waxes and pomades that work amazing with short hair and can be found in your local grocery stores health and beauty section. My personal favorite is bedhead styling wax because it leaves the least residue.
I use GOT 2 B and it helps a lot try Bedhead too.
