you can get soft soled leather shoes at Target and BabiesRus for cheap and they are made pretty well. The sizing goes by age, 0-6mos, 6-12mos and so on. They are cute too :)
My 7 month old is walking now and I need to get some shoes. I know that he won't be in them long before he needs a new size. A size 2 is kind of big, do they make a size 1 shoe? Where can I find a size 1 if they do at a reasonable price? I don't really want to spend $25 on a pair of shoes that will get worn for just a few weeks.
Any ideas?
It was warm enough to be outside at our house this past weekend. That's were I ran into the problem with the shoes. I have a pair of winter boots that are fine for when it isn't so hot outside, but it will be there soon (or so I hope). I never thought about the grippy socks thanks for the great idea I will look next time I am at Wal-Mart or Target. I am also looking on ebay.

You do not want to be cheap about their shoes.
My father is a podiatrist. If you do not get them the right shoes you can ruin their feet for the rest of their lives.
I agree with Denise, find a Stride Rite. The shoes are a lil pricey but the measure their feet and make sure they're perfect for your kiddo.
Or if your lil one is only walking around the house, get the grippy socks or let them go barefoot.
I bought the soft leather shoes from both Target and Babies R Us for my first son and his baby brother is now wearing them, they've held up fine! I just couldn't break down and spend the $ on Robeez. Once they were really walking and going outside a lot I did decide to go with Stride Rite shoes because of how flexible they are. I bought them at a Stride Rite Outlet and they were much cheaper, if you have any big outlet areas near you it would definitely be worth checking out.
Never cheap-out on shoes! Having said that, he isn't walking outside yet so he doesn't really need shoes- barefeet are the best for new walkers. I would check-out the pedi-ped line for "soft walking" shoes. They are somewhat reasonable.
If you can, hold out on purchasing "walkers" until it's warm enough to be playing outside.
I agree with bare feet and grippy socks... but if you need something sturdier for outdoors or whatever, I think your best bet would be to look in the baby aisle by the socks of places like wal-mart or Kohls... they usually have small shoes sized by months, like clothes.
The soft leather (robeez type) shoes are great for early walkers. They grip and keep feet warm without restricting the foot movement and balance like hard soled shoes do. They can also be worn a little big without causing trouble. Target usually has them reasonably priced and Old Navy sometimes does too. If you want the real robeez, Baby Gap sometimes has them on clearance or check places like TJ Maxx, Ross, Marshalls.
Walking at 7 mos? Wow! Barefeet and grippy socks are best for early walking.
I'd take him to Stride Rite and have him measured. Good shoes are worth the money.
He will only need shoes while walking outside. Go to target and get him a pair. He will out grow them so fast.
Otherwise walking barefoot is the best..
Our daughter totally walked unassisted at 6 months. So when I questioned the doctor she said "not to worry so much about the stiff shoes, unless your child has actual foot problems".
