My daughter is 20 months old and gets really bad diaper rash often. Lately she's been having bowel movements in the middle of the night and not waking up, so in the morning when I go in to get her, she's been sitting in BM all night. This morning her bottom is very red and raw and she clenches up and screams and cries when I try to wipe her. I have resorted to using warm baby washcloths (the very soft ones) to clean her, but she stiffens up and won't let me wipe her well enough. If I have the time, I'll put her in the bath and let her play while she soaks the area, but that's not always convenient. I am concerned that she will grow up with some psychological problem relating to her female parts down there! I have called my pediatrician about this several times and have prescription creams for yeast infections in the diaper area, hydrocortisone cream, and silver sulfadiazine, which I apply depending on what the rash looks like (according to what the ped told me). I feel terrible that I can't do more to prevent the pain my daughter's in in her diaper area. Short of potty training her (I don't feel she's ready for that yet), does anyone have any advice?

I'm going through the same thing with my 3 1/2 year old. She does have a yeast infection and has had it on and off since November. I finally convinced the doctor that it must be internal for it to keep recurring and not going away completely. She prescribed Fluconozole (similar to Diflucan that is sometimes prescribed to women for yeast infections.) It's been close to 2 weeks now and we have no open sores, but, she's still terrified when she needs her diaper changed. I don't think that it will affect her psychologically, but, it might take a while for her to forget the feeling and pain of the open rash. I will tell you that I think that our doctor waited way too long to do something other than Nystatin cream, so, stay on top of it. You have to be your own doctor sometimes.

My daughter has had bad diaper rashes also the best cream my peditrican suggested was Lotrimin. It's actually for foot fungus. It works great! Hope this helps.
My parents used it on me, and I use it now, and love it. Try getting vitamin E capsules and using a needle prick it and squuexe onto the bottom. When it is very red I use about 5 of them. It seems to work very well, and it costs about the same as a tube of cream. I have bought the walgreens brand and they work fine. Good luck!

It should help her tremendously. It's all natural and a salve. No chemicals so it won't burn, etc. If you put it on her even when she doesn't have a rash... the salve should protect her skin (even if she does "go" in her sleep and doesn't wake up).

How awful for your daughter...mine is 4 and fully (thank goodness) potty trained for some time. We did have a few of those butt burning rashes though. I used to mix up a concoction of desitin or vaseline/A&D ointment, etc (or similar rash cream), milk of magnesia (antacid, so it cuts acidity of urine that can irritate an already irritated buttom) and lotramin if I saw it was a yeast infection. I would slather this onto her bottom for a few diaper changes and swear to you it worked SO well!! I think my cousins ped recommended it to them when his son had a really bad yeast infection rash.
I think there was only 1 rash that it was not so effective--but nothing was!

Oh, and a nice lukwarm--not hot as hot water dries out skin-- bath to keep the skin clean.
I have 2 products to recommend...both are over the counter, but you'll have better luck finding them if you ask at the Pharmacy. The first is called 'calmoseptine' - it's a lotion. The second is called 'lantiseptic' and it's basically a barrier (it has a wax in it - so you need to warm it up by rubbing it in your hands before applying). Also - give lots of 'air time' during the day when you can watch her. Another hint...use the hair dryer on a cool setting to dry her after the diaper change and before you put on the lantiseptic or creams.
