Severe Elbow Pain from Holding My 9 Month Old?

Hello,

I have recently started experiencing severe pain in my right elbow. I imagine it's because I am contstantly holding my daughter on that side. I try to switch sides but I am right handed so I prefer that side without even realizing it. It's gotten to the point where I can barely unscrew a bottle cap! This scares me as I want and need to hold my baby often and don't want to have anything inhibit that. I just booked an appointment with a rheumatologist and may go see my chiropractor but was curious if any of you have experienced this issue. Thanks!

What can I do next?

i got bursitis in my shoulder from holding my baby. i always held my kids on my left (non-dominant) side because i was doing stuff with my right while i walked around with them. i really recommend you try harder to switch sides, use a sling, use your hip more, something. i know its hard but shes just gonna get heavier. its been 6 years and mine still acts up, and i dont even use that side so much, i would imagine it would be even worse if it was my dominant side. see what the doc says.

I had bursitis in my shoulder I think from taking the baby and carseat in and out of the car - all I could think was "isn't bursitis an old man's disease?" - LOL. I was in a lot of pain, and it took a long time to recover. I did switch the car seat to the other side of the car and I got pain medication and stretching/exercises to do from my doctor. Feel better!

The other tips sound really good. The only other thing I can think of is to try keeping a Hotsling or other soft carrier on you that you can put her in while you let your arm rest. I liked the hotsling b/c it was easy to wear and easy to put your baby in. It's just a fabric ring you place across your body, so you can keep it on and still work around the house. The best thing for your arm is rest, so this might help.
Good luck!

Hi Kim.
I feel your pain,,,(or at least I did) lol....I experienced the same thing when my son was 9 months old...I was in such pain at work one day I was in tears. I made an appointment with my ortho. He said it was tennis elbow or tendenidous (sp.)/ He gave me a brace and a RX It was resolved within 2 weeks. It is very treatable so no worries. good luck,

I had tennis elbow when I had my daughter, as sometimes the only thing that would calm her down in public was swinging her in her carseat. I bought a little brace at Walmart that sits under your elbow, and it made a ton of difference. I suggest you try it out!

Your chiropractor can give you stretches and different exercises to do in the mornings so your elbow is better equipped to handle the new stress. To makes things as easy as possible on your elbow (and the rest of you) I absolutely recommend investing in a good baby sling. I spent $60 on mine, I can't remember the brand - but it was breathable, washable and DURABLE! It survived all 4 of my children and I was still in such good condition I gave it to a friend.
