Hi everyone. I have a problem. My son, who is 2 1/2 came home with this god aweful diaper rash with blisters from daycare. All weekend we tried everything, neosporin, triple paste, A&D and nothing helped because he is holding his bowel movements and screaming in pain because a little will come out at a time from him trying to hold it. I took him to an after hours clinic last night and they gave me burn cream for it. But the problem is, it is not having a chance to heal because he won't "poop" He just squeezes his cheeks together and refuses to go? I don't know what to do. He has to go! Any advise will help please.
Well, we are still working on it. It went away for awhile and daycare is doing all they can. He is getting violent with changing him. On Friday, daycare said they put him on the potty and made him stay there until he went and he finally did. After that he was fine. So now we are battling the rash again. I am going to go get some fungal cream and switch back to his old diapers. Thank you everyone for your advise it was all great.

My daughter got horrible diaper rash, too (complete with blisters and raw spots). Especially when she was teething becuase her poops were so acidic. When she had problems, I used corn starch (instead of baby powder), wet washcloths (instead of wipes) and a 1% to 1 1/2% hydrocortisone cream (instead od diaper rash cream). Publix brand is good enough. All of these would heal her up in about three days. Air dry, air dry, air dry...

I am wondering what you intend to do about this in regards to the daycare. That's a sign of neglect. I would take that up with the sheriffs department. Also what daycare is this? I'm curious so I don't make the mistake of taking my little one there either. That's just terrible. I would let him soak in the tub with toys. Maybe that'll distract him and he'll go. My youngest is not quite two. He loves to play in the tub and pool. I feel so bad for you. Hope it works out.

Sorry your having the diaper rash problem, the only thing that worked for my girls is pure corn starch, none of the creams out there seem to due the trick for my little ones. Just try to bathe him regularly to keep the area clean and try after every diaper change allow the area to air dry before you put the clean diper on. Good Luck!

When even Desitin won't work on severe diaper rash, I assume it's fungal, and apply Miconazole cream (OTC used to treat women's yeast infections), but call your doctor first. Mine prescribed this on sight for my son years ago (He was around 2), and I followed the same procedure years after. My son used to get horrible rashes, with big red bumps and bleeding cracks, and they would crop up overnight. The miconazole usually clears it up in a few days. Once your son is out of pain, he should let go, but in the mean time, applesauce, karo syrup, raisins and prune juice should help loosen up. If not, ask the pharmacist what laxatives are safe to administer. Also, keep a close eye on your daughter when she is old enough to potty. Little girls are prone to yeast infections, especially when they don't wipe properly. Congratulations on your newest addition and good luck! Laurie

Which kind of A&D did you us? I find that the white kind works a whole lot better then the yellowish kind. That's what the doctor proscribed for my son when he had a really bad rash. As far as your son not pooping. Try giving him lots of warm baths. It lets his muscles relax and doesn't hurt him so much to go. Try massaging his tummy while he's in there also. If he's anything like my son dry him off as much as possible and let him run around nake to let his little butt dry as much as possible. It might help alternating powder and A&D also. Once it gets better you might want to find out how he ended up with it in the first place so you don't have to go through it again. It may be that the daycare is feeding him something for snacks that caused it. I know I can't give my kids anything acidy like orange juice or they get rashes. Well hope this helps out and good luck!!!!

sometimes it's best to use no ointment, etc at all.
DON'T use wipes at this time. Let him "air dry" as much as possible.
Don't worry, he WILL poop eventually... nature sees to that. Call your pediatritian.

How terrible. I've had it happen where my kids have had blisters in the past. Raw skin. 2 things. Give him a bath with baking soda in it. Also, mix together Maalox and corn starch (Maalox for the burn & corn starch will dry it up) and smear all over. Good luck!

I only know of 2 things to try-- ask your pharmacist to order you a jar of Resinol (he could even have it back behind the counter). When my daughter had a diaper rash like that the hospital used- it was a reaction to an antibiotic used for pneumonia. Another you can try is to take a full bottle of Maalox(plain),some cheescloth,a funnel or strainer and something to catch the liquid. Drain the bottle into the cheesecloth, discard the liquid and place the solids into a little plastic jar that has a lid. I used to make this when I interned at our local children's hospital- I was a pharmacy tech there.
I hope this helps

Try lanolin cream, its very cheap and works on everything. It will probably still take a little for him to want to have a bowel movement again, but thats natural. I personally had an issue with burning and rawness in that area and I could not walk, but the lanolin cream helped immediately for me to be mobile again. so its worth a try if you have tried everything else. I hope he gets better

Hi D.,
I would say maybe try giving him some Apple Juice, Prune Juice or something that would loosen his bowel movements. Just make sure that you don't give him anything that would cause diarrhea but that may help him feel better about going. If he still doesn't want to go he will end up being constipated so you may end up having to give him something that's going to make his bowel movements really loose.

So today's tueseday--how'd it go?
Poor kid! and I would give that daycare a good tongue lashing BTW....this should no be happening unless maybe he had some severe diarrhea--seriously, talk to a supervisor and if it happens again--find another daycare. And don't take him back there while he has that rash! It won't get better.
Do you think he's constipated?, because eventually he'll HAVE to go. Things like applejuice will "speed" it up. And talk to him--let him know you know it hurts but he needs to go, etc.
The more he doesn't have his diaper on, the more comfortable he'll be and the more time the rash will have to heal. How potty trained is he? I ask because I have a 2 1/2 year old too, who isn't potty trained but is working on it and can use the potty. So if it were him, I would probably let him run around in a "safe" zone naked where I have the potty out.
Since his bottom is so sore I would be trying to get him to use the potty since it will hurt much less. If he's one of the 2 1/2 year olds that refuses the potty, then I would still try to keep that diaper off him as much as possible...and when you do have it on him--change it a lot--every time he pees and let him air dry before putting another one on.
Once his bottom hurts less, it will be much easier to get him to go poop.

Cornstarch! It is cool and helps keep them dry and comfortalbe! Another inexpenive ointment that you have to ask the pharmacist for by name is Resinol Ointment. You have to ask them because it is an over the counter, but it is cheap and works well! As far as not going, a little mineral oil in some juice will loosen it up for him to be relaxed and go! Good Luck!

Is your son Potty trained?
I think that if he is trying to hold it in then he is ready to go on the potty.
You need to talk to the one in charge at the day care and find out why he was left in a poopy diaper for so long! You need to tell them that this will not be allowed again and that this is not how you want your child treated.
I have this prescription that was prescribed by my children’s Dr. and it is WONDERFUL. It only works best at night when they are not going #2.
It is a prescription and it is called
Nystatin and Triamcinolone Acetonide (Cream) USP.
You need to call your child's Doctor and ask for them to call it in to the Pharmacy.
So that you can go and pick it up.
It does not cost alot.
God Bless your little one.

Let him breath air is the best treatment for diaper rash, and then when you do dress him vaseline, for relief for him at bath time try oatmeal baths, aveeno or store brand same thing. If it seems yeast induced which is very common, either get some womens yeast infection cream and rub it on there a few times a day keep him as dry as possible, feed him yogurt and you can even rub yogurt directly on there while diaper free. I'm taking these suggestions from what I learned in esthetician (skincare) school and what I would tell a client or use on my 1 year old. When you do have to send him back to daycare if its frequent changes you are worried about let them know its part of their job but to help ensure dryness in case he still isn't being changed enough use diper cream ointment, vaseline as a precaution and then put powder direbtly in dieper/undies to help absorb a little more. Best of luck to you and your baby I wish him relief soon. If it still doesn't get better after all you've done doctor can not only prescribe topical steriod to get rid of but also antibiotic just like us for yeast infection.

It sounds like he is constipated now from this ordeal. I'd recommend fleet glycerine suppositories for kids. They're no fun, but it should get things going down there for him. It might also be a good idea to try getting him to eat some fiber to loosen things up a bit (my son loves apple bran muffins). Once he's able to go, try Budreaux's Butt Paste for the rash- I swear it's the only thing that's ever worked for my boys! Good luck!

D., I know this is several days after your request, so hopefully you've received a ton of advice on the rash and your little one is all healed now. For future reference, though I wanted to give you the recipe my sons' pediatrician gave us on rashes after my second son had his millionth terrible rash, complete with bleeding chapped skin and intense pain. It was so bad that walking around without a diaper, something that usually is helpful, was actually worse. We tried his recipe and used it MANY more times until he was pottytrained. I also found some information on the mix on babycenter.com at one point, so I know it is frequently used. Anyway, here it is and good luck.
Mixture of Lotrimin AF and Cortaid (about an inch long strip of each) rubbed onto the rash followed by a THICK coating of Desitin or Butt Paste on top. We found Butt Paste alone worked great after the rash was mostly healed, but we liked the mix of Desitin with the Lotrimin AF and Cortaid best.

Dear D.,
I am so sorry about your situation. What do you think about letting your son go around without a diaper for some periods. I guess if you have wall-to-wall carpet it could be a mess. How about out in the back yard? Or maybe a friend's yard. Just have him wear a long shirt and let him play. Maybe the great out-doors will help him be distracted enough to go ahead and go poo and it will definitely help dry out his bottom. Water is the best laxative. Have him drink lots if you can. Have him eat a prune a day. Cut it up to raisin size. It may make going poo easier. I hope this helps and pray he heals up very soon.
God Bless...

has the baby been on strong antibiotics lately or been on antibiotics for an extended period of time? what you are describing sounds like a yeast infection. in little boys it comes out as a rash - very bad with blistering and bleeding. my son had this when he was about 22 months old.
his ENT told me to use the following concoction: A&D or Desitin ointment mixed with gynelotrimen. the A&D protects him rump when he goes pee so it doesn't burn an irritate the rash any more. the gynelotrimen heals the yeast infection.
also if he is still in diapers, i suggest using cloth diapers when he is home. you will have to be very aware when he wets so it does not soak your furniture or carpet. if you can, let him go nude for a little each day - again with the soaking but it is better for healing.
to get him to go potty easier, you may want to try giving him a little mineral oil. it will loosen and soften his stool and so it does not hurt so bad when he goes.
how long has thing been going on? you may want to ask the pedi if you can give him an enema to help clear his bowels.

I guess getting rid of the constipation would be a huge step in the right direction. My sister swears by giving children straight apple juice to loosen them up (I always mix my kid's juice with water, but when my daughter is stuck, I do this). Plus I try to give the kids lots of fresh apples, blueberries, raspberries, etc to keep it moving! If he's still in diapers, maybe can you leave them off as much as possible at home to let air get to it so it will heal quicker? And when the diapers are on, daycare needs to stay on top of changing them very frequently. Poor little guy. Good luck! Oh, my pediatrician gave my daughter a prescription liquid stool softener, but honestly, the apple juice works faster.

Awwwwwwwww poor little guy. First you need to make the stool softer. Is he eating a lot of dairy? Drinking a lot of milk? Eating a lot of cheese? Try to replace some of that temporarily with apple juice or things that he will eat and drink that will help his bowels. I'm not sure of the age limit, but you could ask your pediatrician about Lotrimin. It is an ointment, used to be prescription strength. Looks like Desitin. Works 10 times better. Praying for your little guy.

Went through the same thing and tried everything. The only thing that worked is the following formula;
Malox
A & D ointment with vitamin D
cortizone cream.
Mix 1/3 of each into a plastic container. Here is how it works; the cortizone kills the pain. The Malox neutralizes the acid in the urin. And the Zinc protects the skin.
My daughter was bleeding and we tried everything including cloth diapers, leaving her naked, every cream on the market. I promise you this works. Also cut down on juices because they are ascidic.

hi.I had this problem many times with my kids. The reason nothing is working is because it is probably no longer a rash but a fungus. The only thing that will take care of that is an antifungal.Ask your doctor about a cream called "nystatin" i believe thats the right spelling, but i can b wrong! Im sure theres also others, but thats the one they always gave me and it worked wonders! Also, try leaving the baby naked with just some powder, maybe even facing the window to get a little breeze to help keep it dry.It will also be a big relief for him too. Well, good luck!ps: I would also check up on the daycare to make sure he is being changed frequently enough,A severe rash like that usually starts from urine and or poop sitting on the skin too long.

This is the worst and feel so bad for him! Make sure he gets a bath every night plus a second one if possible, just to let him soak and get clean without wiping him. Daycare has to know that you don't care how many dipaers it takes, change him a lot! When he is home diaper off! Creams are good, but nothing will heal it like be dipaer free. As for him holding it in, you need to do the apple juice and fiber rich foods. There will be a point where he can't hold it anymore. When you gets to this point, my guess is you will be able to tell it's coming, try putting him on the potty so he doesn't get it all over him. Focus more on healing in quickly, becacause that will take away the fear of going! You really can't blame him.

Hi D.,
When my Zak was real young he got a very severe diaper rash, what I found is that a diaper rash prevention cream will make it worse as it locks the moisture in, you need something to heal it. We found the Butt Paste worked well but best of all, was to let him bathe in oatmeal. Aveeno make some sachets you can put in the bath, they really help. Other than that let him go without a diaper as much as possible. Let him have lots of apple juice so it is nice and soft when he does go and easier on him.
