Severe Diaper Rash That Won't Go Away.

My daughter, Marley, has had a severe diaper rash that will not go away. I change her frequently, use lots of Desitin, but it does not seem to get better. I recently introduced rice cereal with apples and thought maybe that was to blame, so I have stopped it to see, but in the meantime she is very uncomfortable. Does anyone have any remedies that have worked for them? Suggestions greatly appreciated.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank you all for your suggestions, unfortunately, she got worse. I called her pediatrician and had a RX for Nystatin called in. They said to give it 3 days and if no response to treatment, I need to bring her in. Hopefully the Nystatin will work. Thank you all again.

The Nystatin worked. She is her happy little self again. Thank you all.

Sincerely,
A.

My daughter would get diaper rash and I couldnt use desitin. I had to use clear stuff for diapers. I cant think of the names of some. It looks like vaseline but its not. It's for babies or older people that have to be in the bed or something like that. I tell ya though, it worked tho. It's cheaper too. Hope everything works out.

This may sound crazy, but follow me..... boil a tea bag, then set it aside for a couple of hours untill it is completely cooled all the way through. Before you put your little one to bed, place the tea bag on the area where their diaper rash is, and close the diaper up. Leave it over night, when you change their diaper in the morning the rash will be gone or loads better. The tea draws the heat out, which in turns relieves their discomfort. I thought this was crazy at first, but trust me, it works. I have a 2 y/o daughter who gets rashes quite frequently, this always works. I haven't bought any creams since I learned this remedy.

My son had bad diaper rash for awhile. I turned out to be a wheat allergy. His doctor recommended that we go to Wilson's pharmacy in Johnson City and get their "butt paste" I don't know why but it works like a charm. It is more expensive that other over the counter stuff... but it definitely works. Cutting out the wheat and using the butt paste cleared up his hiney in just a few days. Another good prouduct is aquaphor. It seals moisture in while blocking the poop from attaching to the skin.
By the way... Marley is such a great name. We were going to name our baby that... but he turned out to a boy so we chose Ethan instead. :)

BUT WHEN MY BABY HAD BOWEL MOVEMENTS SHE HAD ACID COMING OUT TO AND THE VASOLINE WOULD PROTECT IT FROM SITTING ON HER SKIN KINDA LIKE WHEN YOU WOULD TAKE AND POUR WATER ON IT HOW IT JUS RUNS OFF WELL IT PREVENTS IT FROM HAVIN A RASH. It may be a yeast infection. My daughter and son both had this as babies. We got a prescription from our pediatrician for a medicine called Nystatin. Also with my son who got diaper rash much worse than my daughter, I would put Neosporin on first, then rub on the Desitin. The Neosporin works to clear up the rash and the Desitin repels the wetness. Hope this helps!

My pediatrician told me that when my son gets diahrea or has diaper rash, take the plain milk of magnesia and dab it on the affected area with a cotton ball (make sure the skin is clean). Let it dry and then put desitin on top of it. If your child has diahrea, the acid in the stool is what makes the skin raw. Acid cannot eat through the milk of magnesia. It acts as a protectant for the skin. She said acid could eat through the desitin and if it made it to the milk of mag., there's no gettin through that stuff!!!

My son had a diaper rash that wouldn't go away that I attributed to the foods we had just started feeding him. We finally took him to the doctor and it was a yeast infection. When we were little, my mom would just use over the counter yeast infection ointment if we got yeast infections. My doctor gave us an antifungal ointment called nystatin. It does pretty much the same thing. But don't hesitate to call the doctor and ask them what to do.

best way is hardest way... since she is 9 months old let her spend time without a diaper which will mean you basically need to hover over her for a few hours with towels waiting for accidents or if you have it let her play on the porch where she can just let go and you can wash her up with warm water when it's time to come back in

A great treatment, but it won't work for a yeast infection (which is what it sounds like your daughter has) is get a large container of Aquaphor and a bottle of Malox, empty the Aquaphor into a large mixing bowl, and with an electric mixer mix the entire bottle of Malox with the Aquaphor, then use it on Diaper rash, dry skin, scrapes, etc. It sooths, cools and heals. My sister is an RN in neonatal and she told me about this when I had my daughter. I still use it when her bottom gets red and she is 2 1/2, in fact if she is itching or burning she'll ask for her special medicine.

But, I used Desitin Creamy with a coating of vaseline underneath to act as a barrier. And in the mean time, while bathing don't get his bottom in contact with soap. After bathtime, blot dry and allow to air dry as well. Good luck.

Has the doctor checked this rash? It could be a yeast infection and Desitin will not help that. My daughter had a yeast infection that was so severe that her skin became raw and peeled away. The doctor treated it twice with strong medications but with no results. After seeing a TV commercial for Monistat 7 I used it on my baby that same night and, amazingly, by the next morning there was barely a sign of the infection. I asked the doctor about Monistat 7 but she said it would be too strong, so for fear of causing damage I didn't use it for a couple of days and the infectin reappeared. I resumed with the Monistat 7 and never saw the rash again. I'm not advising you to use such, but do consult with a doctor.

Hi A.!

I have 2 boys, Jaden,2 1/2 and Britton, 17 mos. Desitin will clear up my oldest within a few hours. My younger son it won't even help a little. I've found that Aquaphor from Eucerin clears Britton up just like the Desitin on Jaden. (As long as it's not a yeast infection) Which in that case the prescription, Nystatin will work.

You mentioned you recently started apples in the cereal. I found out early that Jaden is allergic to apples. He gets diareah and a severe diaper rash from anything that has apples in it.

I hope my experiences will help you. Good luck!!

Resinol is a very effective ointment. Find it behind the pharamcist's counter (though no prescription is required) at WalMart or Rite-Aid or Walgreen's. Expensive ($7 for a small jar) but it will clear up the rash astonishingly fast. Smear it on good at every change and especially overnight. No fruit juices or anything acidic until it clears up - the acid in her poop will hurt! I have four kids and used to run a daycare years ago, and Resinol works wonders. If it looks bumpy and doesn't respond to anything, it may be a yeast rash and will clear up with either prescription Nystatin cream or over the counter women's Monistat (yeast infection) cream.

If it's really bad, I'd take the baby to the doctor. I've read that severe rashes can be indicators of other problems.
For now though, try to keep baby clean and dry and let air get to her bottom. When my kids would start to get red, I'd let them run around without a diaper.

Is there a possibility Marley is allergic to the diapers you are using? Try a different brand and see if it helps. My daughter has five children and is a Neonatal Intensive Care nurse and she recommends the following:
Calmoseptine Ointment found at most drug stores. If this is not in stock, ask your drug store to order it for you.
To get information you can call 1-800-800-3405 or www.calmoseptinceointment.com
To prevent diaper rashes use sesame seed oil found in the cooking oil section of the grocery store.

My daughter had the same problem and after lots of Desitin I called the doctor and made an appt. He gave us a sample of "Dr. Smith's diaper rash cream/ointment". The next day it was much better. That was 3 years ago and now I have a newborn and we used it right away with her and she has never had a red bottom. You can buy it at Eckerd, its much more expensive that other Diaper rash creams. I also found it at Walmart at the pharmacy, but you have to ask for it. I think its $12 a tube but also comes in a little container. Good luck!

YES!!! Try using Columbia Anticeptic powder (www.columbiapowder.com). It has worked like a charm on my son's worst diaper rashes. It heals them in NO time. I used it most recently on a horrible diahrea burn he received (he cried if I even looked like I was going to wipe his bottom). In two days, it looked like he never even had a rash!! I swear by it. Its the closest thing to a miracle on tough diaper rashes that I could find. I bought it at Walgreens. If you can't find that then the second best thing is Gold Bond's Baby Powder - also at Walgreens. When you apply it, use the Desitin cream first to create a barrier so her legs and skin won't rub against each other and then apply the powder over it. Once it begins to heal, you can just use the powder by itself.

Also, let her go bare bottomed and get some air on that hiny. Moisture traps in bacteria that cause some rashes.

Good luck with your angel baby's rash!

My daughter went through a couple of weeks with a rash that made her skin crack and bleed, i tried everything, the pharmacist at Walgreens told me that once it gets that bad it starts to be a bacterial infection not just a rash caused by wetness which is why a "barrier cream"(like Destin or Flanders)doesn't work after it gets so bad. He suggested mixing Flanders diaper cream, with a mild athletes foot cream (sounds weird but that is for the bacteria)and a cortisone cream, i mixed an even amount in a little bowl and used that everytime i changed her diaper, i tried to change it every 2 hours. It sounds crazy but it worked within about 3 days it was pretty much gone.Hope it works!!

A couple of thoughts based on our experiences...

Our pediatrician recommended Dr. Smith's cream which you can find at a pharmacy (I found it in our hospital pharmacy). It's supposed to be great but we honestly haven't used it yet.

We use Fuzzi Bunz cloth diapers. If you want to entertain them they are GREAT and very easy to use and cloth cuts down dramatically on rashes because they breathe more than disposables.

The best advice is "free time". Keep them out of the diaper as much as you can. Usually right after I change my son (he's 1) about 2x a day I let him just run around naken for 15 min or so. Air exposure is the best thing to heal a rash.

Good luck. It surely sucks and we know it hurts!

I have a 15 mos old, Rory. She once had a really bad diaper rash, and nothing seemed to help. It was very painful for her worse than I'd ever seen. It was then that I realized that yeast was the culprit. Yeast diaper rash is very recognizable. It has a defined red border (bright red) with red dots. I used an over the counter gyne-lotrimin cream mixed with Flander's buttocks ointment and within a week she was much better.

Hi. A girlfriend of mine went throught the same thing. Here's a recap of what we discussed.

1. Has Marley been on antibiotics lateley? If so, she may have a yeast infection. Look on her tongue to see if there's thrush there (white bumps on tongue that look like milk on tongue). You can look up thrush on the Internet and get good advice there.
2. If it is yeast, diaper cream won't help. Your doctor can prescribe some anti-fungal for her bottom. My dr. told me to clean and dry the area, put the anti-fungal on then put diaper cream on last.
3. Also, if it is yeast, give her yogurt as much as possible (with live and active cultures). Avoid sugars (including juice, white flour, processed foods).
3. Make sure bottom is dry before putting any diaper cream. The point is to block moisture out, not lock it in!
4. Let her go without diapers whenever possible so the air can heal her bottom.
5. Let the sun shine where the sun don't shine! Expose her bottom to direct sunlight a little bit a day (not too much, you don't want sunburn!).
6. Make sure she's drinking plenty of water.

I know that's a lot of information. If you're unsure please contact your pediatritian. I know you want Marley to be comfortable soon.

Good luck!

My daughter had what turned out to be a yeast infection. My doctor said I could get an over the counter yeast infection cream to cover the affected area (this is not to be used internally on children) Make sure you get the 7 day treatment as this has lowest dose of meds! It cleared up within 2 days when we used it! Hope this helps!

I love the Resinol! You can also get it from Wal-Mart's pharmacy (without a perscription). It sort of looks like silly putty but it works really well and fast.

I know this may sound crazy but in raising 2 grils and several neices and newphews and my parents raisings foster kids i learned that Cornstarch is the best remmedy for a diaper rash rather it be a diaper rash or a yeast infection. I never bought creams ointments or powders as my children grew up it was alWAAYS cornstarch.

I had this very same problem with my daughter, and the best remedy for diaper rash is fresh air! We basically let our little girl run around naked from the waist down (shirt and socks only) every second she was at home. The only time we put any clothes on her bottom half was when she was leaving the house. It was some of the best non-medical advice our doctor had could have given! Just a warning... if she isn't potty trained yet, make sure you take her yourself about every half hour if you don't want any "accidents".

It sounds to me like since it is not getting any better at all with what you have done, that it may be more than just a diaper rash. It sounds like it may be a yeast infection. Babies can get yeast infections just like adults can...even little boys. My daughter(now 10) and my son(now six) both had yeast infections as infants. I thought the same thing...it was just a diaper rash that wouldn't go away. I took them to the doctor and it was actually a yeast infection that needed something more than desitin...back then the doctor prescribed some nystatin cream and it was gone right away after starting the meds. Hope this helps and Good Luck!! :)

I know that your baby is all better now but just incase she does get a rash again that isnt bad enough to call the Dr. you can use this stuff called Aquaphor Baby, it is for severely dry skin and a bunch of other skin issues. I use it on my daughter at the first sign of a rash and it goes away bu the time i change her diaper again.. I love the product. You can even use it on your skin when it gets really dry. I am glad your daughter is better and good luck in the future.

Try A&D ointment. Both of my children suffered with diaper rash and I tried everything. Finally a neighbor suggested A&D Ointment and it cleared it up almost overnight. I have never used anything else. Desitin always seemed to make my babies bottoms worse instead of better.

Take heed to the advice about althletes foot cream. It is much cheaper than topical yeast infection cream. I found the lotrimin (generic is fine) foot or jock itch spray is best. Then you can just shoot and go :) no need for other cream or powder. I have six children, and wish I had known about this in the beginning!!!

She might be allergic to the diapers you are using! Have you tried a different brand to see if that's the case? Especially since you are using ointment and changing frequently and it is still there.

My daughter had horrible diaper rash...The way to tell if it's yeast or rash is to pay attention which direction the red rash is traveling...If it travels from back to front most likly it is a diaper rash, if it travels from front to back most likely it is a yeast infection. Try using A&D ointment or vasaline with corn starch. This was the only remedy that would clear my daughter up quickly...Be carefull with the cornstarch not to get it in the baby's face because it could cause allergies. Discontinue the use of baby wipes because that will only irritate the area, I always used wet paper towels instead. The A&D ointment or vasaline will keep the area protected and it will medicate it, the corn starch dries up the wetness, so the two of them together work absolutely GREAT...Good Luck and God Bless...

Corn starch mixed with water to made a paste. Also, let her run around with a diaper on to give her a break on the diaper. This worked wonders when my son had one so severe that even desitin stung his little bottom. Good luck.

Hi, A.. It sounds like that rash might be caused by yeast. desitin and those things won't help. You can get a cream from your pediatrician or try using an over the counter anti fungal cream. My daughter had one when she was very young and rotating between the prescription and the over the counter did the trick. Hope this helps.

I agree with the others about the Boudreaux's Butt Paste (it's the only diaper rash ointment I use). Also, if it won't go away with the Boudreaux's, try a little monastat with each diaper change. My son had the same problem and the monastat cleared it up within 3 changes.

Mr doctor recommends dabbing Maalox or Mylanta (the stomach acid relief liquids) on the rash with a cotton ball and then covering with your favorite diaper rash cream. Doc says that there are acids in the BM just like in your stomach and they can cause horrible corrosion on sensitive baby skin.

Hi. I recently moved up here from south ga. When we were living there, I used to buy a diaper cream that was made by a pharmacist for his children. I don't know if they will sell it over the phone using a credit card. But you could try it if you want to. This cream is the best cream I have found. It is a bit expensive but for bad rashes, that is all I use. The store is called The Medicine Shoppe. The number is ###-###-#### and it is called diaper goo.

Resinol is the only thing that ever worked for us. My daughter is now 2 but still gets diaper rash and always had them really bad. You can get it at Walgreens but you have to get it from the pharmacist even though you do not have to have a prescription for it. Sometimes they have to order it but it only takes a day to come in usually. It is amazing stuff. It would clear her up in one day when nothing else would even make a slight difference.

L.
