SERIOUSLY... Could I Be Pregnant??

Maybe I am just being paranoid here.. but I have a 3 1/2 mo old, am exclusively breastfeeding, and have an IUD placed. But at 7 1/2 weeks post partum, I had a period. They say you typically will not have a cycle for MONTHS if exclusively breastfeeding, but I seem to be the exception to that rule. Well I have not had one since, and now I am paranoid that maybe I am pregnant and do not know it yet. I do not wanna spazz out and get a test just yet because they sometimes read false postives, especially if nursing because of the hormones in my body. Just wondering what others thought/had to say before I subject myself to peeing on a stick or having lab work done.

What can I do next?

That is not always true. I think breastfeeding affects different women in different ways. I had a period one time after the 6 weeks and not again untill I stopped breastfeeding my daughter. And yes I breastfed her exclusively. Also I think it is like in the millions or close to it for an IUD to fail. I know it is not a 100 percent but it is pretty close. I plan on getting one of those after I have my son. You can take a test if you still feel uncomfortable but I wouldn't worry about it untill you had some specific pregnancy symptoms.

I had my period at about 6 weeks postpartum. Apparently lots of people never have a period while breastfeeding, but I was not one of those lucky ones. I got it like clockwork, until I got an IUD. Then my cycle got all screwy, and now I finally don't really have them much. When did you have the IUD placed? It could have caused the bleeding. Or it could have just been a one time period and now the IUD is causing you to not have one, because they commonly do that if they are the kind with hormones. I would never say you can't be pregnant while nursing, because it is not that uncommon. But to be pregnant with an IUD is pretty uncommon. I wouldn't worry about it if I were you. If you can't stop worrying about it or start to notice any pregnancy symptoms, a blood test would be your best bet to find out for sure.

after my second daughter i was exclusively breastfeeding and i had my first period 6 weeks after or so, and then i had my IUD put in and i havent had one since (its been 3 years now). from what ive read its a fairly common "side effect" of the mirena iud, which is the one i have.

while taking the depo shot i had no periods and i realize your birth control method is a little different but depo is not the only method i have heard that you will have little or no periods with for example mirena is this way.

I had what I thought was a period at about 8 weeks PP too. I didn't have another one until I was 13 months PP and stopped breastfeeding all together. I have also had a friend this happened to as well (though I think she started again after 5 months of BF). I'd say, if you're nervous about it, go ahead and pee on a stick. It will put your mind at ease and you'll know for sure. :)

I didn't have my periods for 9-18 months after having a baby because of breastfeeding. I did have a pregnancy test before having surgery once when I was post partum and it was a false positive blood test. My doctor said it was probably hormones since I was exclusively breastfeeding and I didn't have a period yet. He just rescheduled my surgery and retested me and the second test was negative. I would imagine that you're not pregnant but one can never be certain. Good luck to you!

I found out I was prego when my 2nd was only 6 mo old. I was on the mini pill & had just given up nursing her. I do know that it can happen, but nursing my affect your periods as well. If you think there is a chance - I would take a test or go get the lab work done... never hurts to pee on the stick. I have always gotten my period back even when nursing... with my last I had to change my 6 week check-up because of it.

If for some reason you are - it isn't the end of the world & I wouldn't spazz out about it. Although I was shocked when I found out I was prego w/ a 6 mo old. My daughter & son are very close and there is no way I would ever go back & change anything.... they have a very special bond, I don't know if they would have that if they weren't so close in age. So, try to remember - everything happens for a reason... if you are - you will be ok!

Whether or not you get your period while breastfeeding doesn't determine if you can get pregnant or not. You can ovulate without getting a period after. If you had sex, then yes, you COULD be pregnant. But as others mentioned, the failure rate for an IUD is minuscule. I didn't get my period for a year--exclusively breastfed for the first 9 months or so. Not having your period is also common with IUD...so you have a double whammy.

Pregnancy tests measure a very specific type of hormone (HCG) and isn't likely to be disrupted by the varying levels of oxytocin, estrogen, and progesterone following pregnancy. The only concern is if you would be enough days past fertilization for the levels to be detectable.

If you're really worried I'd get checked at the doctor...or go ahead and pee on the stick and if you think it's false positive then go to the doctor.

Chances are you are not pregnant though...when my IUD was put in, my son was about 3 months old and I was nursing but I bled forever and now I barely have a period if any...go ahead and find out for sure...no sense worrying needlessly.

Although you could be preggo, I wouldn't jump to conclusions. I had the same kind of issues. I wasn't very regular before I went on birth control or after going off and I haven't been regular since. My daughter is 13 months old and things still aren't back to the way they were. I would give it a little more time. I had periods while I was exclusively breastfeeding so not everyone is so lucky to skip over that part. You may have also been bleeding from the IUD implantation. I'm assuming you had it done at your 6 week checkup, which would explain the bleeding a week later. If it will make you feel better try a dollar store test and see what happens.

Good luck!!!

The test will NOT read a false positive because you are breastfeeding. Breastfeeding releases a horomone that prevents ovulation it is not the same that is released when pregnant. I started my period about 3-4 months after delivery, I also have friends whose started 4 weeks after and another whose did not come back until the child was completely weaned. If you have an IUD I would not be too coincerned about it, but maybe pick up a test to ease your mind. It is not abnormal to have a much greater length of time between periods while breastfeeding and maybe the first was a fluke.
