Mirana IUD? Yes? No?

My husband and I want a couple years of non pregnancy since the majority of our marriage has been me pregnant. I have been really considering Mirana IUD as birthcontrol after this pregnancy. I talked to my husband about my wishes and the way he responded was with uncertainty, but he was still supportive. I need to do more research on it, and I know that my body is like clockwork and takes very well to medications and birthcontrol. I would like to hear about your personal experiences, good or bad. I would also like to know after having it removed how did trying to conceive go.

A little up in the air right now about it, but any alternative suggestions is welcomed (please note that I DO NOT like taking the pill). Thank you for your time mamas!

So What Happened?

Can't thank you enough mamas for your help! So we have decided to go for it... after I read your responses and did research on it. Because I had PostPartum Depression after having my son, I didn't feel normal til I got back on a hormonal birthcontrol (Neuva Ring, which my hubby is not fond of) and counseling. So paragaurd sounds nice, but I know I need the hormones. Up to 5 years almost worry free, can't beat it, specially if it gives me and my husband back some time to ourselves... We'll Take It!

I have had the Mirana since after having my son two years ago and I love it! You don't have to think about it at all, I had no side effects, and my period almost completely went away. Such an improvement over the pill.

I LOVE the Mirena IUD! I've had mine for 5 years (get it replaced next month) and have had NO issues. We are not planning on having any more children and husband is getting a vasectomy but I love not having a period and GYN suggested to go ahead and put in another Mirena since I've had no side affects.
It's really nice not having to worry about taking a daily pill or husband using condoms!
Good luck!

I have had the Mirana for 2.5 years now and I couldn't be happier. There was a little discomfort for about 1 month after it was put in but then nothing. I had it put in 6 weeks after my daughter was born. My periods have completly stopped now and I only occasionaly feel mild cramping and one day of extreemly light spotting about every 3 months.

I highly recommend it. It has been the best decision I have made about birth control.

I love love love my Mirena IUD. I have had mine just shy of 2 years and have been thrilled with it the entire time! I have minor cramping the first week or so and I shot randomly, which can be kinds frustratin, because there is no pain associated with it, so I don't always know I am. :) I have had about 3 heavy periods with cramping, but it only last about 24-36 hours, and completely bearable! The BEST part is that not only have I noticed it, but my hubby has, is that I have NO mood swings or drastic change in moods anymore! there is NO PMSing, or random crying or anythign of the sort! In my mind this is one of the BEST parts of it! Oh and it never has been a problem for us when having intercourse, as some say. It just depends on the person and proper placement of the IUD. Good Luck! :)

I got Mirena at 6 wks after childbirth--highly recommended by my OB/GYN. I love that it is hassle-free--no shots or pills and I love the light periods--mere spotting--so easy. I had to have the wire adjusted/trimmed when it was brand new but now it is tucked up out of the way and no problems. I did think for a while that it might have been messing with my hormones the 1st year, but I'm okay now... I still have it. I guess it was post-partum issues that whacked me out emotionally, now I'm stable again.

Also FYI, people who believe that life begins at conception have concerns about IUDs that just prevent implantation rather than preventing fertilization, but this is NOT the case with Mirena. Mirena is 2-fold, hormones prevent fertilization, and the physical device also prevents possible implantation. As someone who believes life begins at conception, this was also a concern for me in choosing IUD, but am happy with Mirena.

Mirena took my body a while to adjust to. At first you sort of shed most of your uterine lining so it's like a period that lasts for a couple of weeks. I had some cramping the first day or so and after that, just bleeding. For the next year I got "periods" at regular times, but they were only a tiny bit of spotting for one day (like by the time I noticed it, it was over). Then NOTHING for a year. It's been 2 1/2 years now and I think the tiny bit of hormone is starting to wear off because I am getting very light (like too light for a tampon, but still) periods once a month.

I also like that ttc would take a trip to the doctor for it to be removed, so you cant just change your mind impulsively.

If you tolerate hormonal birth control well, you might want to stick with it and use something like the patch or ring which don't require you do do anything daily but you can stop when you want to and won't have any new potential side effects.

I've had mine for 16 months (got it 6 weeks pp). Had some cramping for the first couple of weeks, no period for several months, and now a very light (spotting) period every 4-6 weeks. I'm hopeful that when I get it taken out I will return to "normal" pretty quickly. We hope to space babies about 2.5 - 3 years... so it will be fairly soon.

I started using the Mirena shortly after the birth of my daughter (6 wks is what they recommend) and so far...it's been great! I was informed that it usually takes up to about a year for your period to lessen or disappear. Obviously it works differently for everyone, but for me, I haven't had a menstrual since I've been on it. I don't even notice it's there. Here's the official site where you can check out most of what you need to know: www.Mirena-US.com Hope this helps. :D I really this method of birth control. I used to be on Depo Provera, but when I found how much weight I gained off of it and how it damages your bones. I immediately got off of it. I didn't have my period for over a year 1/2 after being off of it! So, I decided to look into other options. I'm glad I switched.

I've been on mirena for about 3 years now, and love it. The first several months I spotted pretty consistently, but since then, I have very few periods, and when I do, they are light and short. Mostly just spotting. As someone with endometriosis, and medications that disrupt the pill's effectiveness, this was definitely the right choice for me.

LOVE LOVE LOVE IT! I wont go into all the many reasons, but you asked something about conceiving afterwards. Here is my experience:
Got it in after my first. My period was always around the 18th of the month. Had it in place for 18 months. Got it taken out when we were ready to try again. It happened to be the 16th. Period started in 2 days (same as before)...then apx 2 weeks later I ovulated and conceived! That was proof enough for me that you dont have to "bleed" to have a cycle!
I have one in now after my second and I don't have a period with it and I love it!!!

I have had two Mirena IUD's. The first one I had in for probably a year and a half with no problems whatsoever. (Unless you want to call not having a period a problem, I certainly don't). I had it removed when we decided to have our fourth child and got pregnant about a month later. After my daughter was born I had another one put in because I just couldn't bring myself to get fixed, (and neither could my hubby), and she just turned four.
My own personal experience has been a good one and it's definitely the best form of birth control I've ever used.

I do not like taking the pill either. I am not very good at remembering to take something everyday :) However I did not want to do the IUD at all. I have been using NUVEU Ring for the last year and for the year before I got pregnant with my last baby.
I like it a lot! It is comforable. It does not bother my husband. And I don't forget to take it. It may be an option that you want to consider.

I LOVE using the Mirena. I have had two...one after each of my babies. I got pregnant 2 weeks after having it removed with my 2nd child. I just love not having to think about it once it's put in. It will definitely be my method of birth control from now on!

I love my Mirena! I got it after my 2nd child and had it for about 2 1/2 years. There is kind of random spotting/bleeding for the first few months, but after then I didn't have a period or any bleeding at all for over 2 years! I loved it! you don't have to worry about anything! Check the string once in awhile to make sure they are still in the right place and that the IUD isn't changing position in the uterus. My husband and I decided we wanted 1 more baby, I got it out April 16th and got pregnant April 19th! My youngest is now 3 months and I got my new Mirena put in a couple weeks ago. I am having bleeding and a little craping (take tylenol) but thats it. I completely Love and Trust my Mirena! Hope this helps!

It was the best decision I ever made. After my first little one came along I wanted to be worry free of becoming pregnant. It took me two weeks to get pregnant with my first after having been on the pill for like 7 or 8 years. So two months after my little one was born, I opted for the Mirena. I never had any problems, like others have said. I also didn't have a period for 18 months which was great. Once we decided to try and get pregnant again I had the Mirena removed and one month later I was back to the exact cycle I had before. And now I am pregnant due in June. So for me it was one awesome option. I plan on having another one put in after my baby is born.
Hope this helps.

I have several friends that love their Mirena, but I had a less than great experience with it. I had it in for a year and bled the entire time, plus I started experiencing horrible arthritis-like pain in my hips. It got to the point where it was painful to even walk. I did some online research and found that this is a side-effect some people experience, although it's not stated by the manufacturer. As soon as I had the Mirena removed the pain went away and has never returned.

I don't have personal experience with it, but a good friend of mine had to have it surgically removed. Somehow it puntured through her uterus. They told her she should still be able to concieve.

I had Mirena inserted when my daughter was about 6 weeks old. I had one week of spotting and NOTHING since. (grin!) It's been so nice to not have to even think about contraception in 2 1/2 years, no periods, pills, keeping track of the calendar etc. I would recomend it (and have) to any of my friends. I;m having it removed in a few weeks so we can expand our family. Good luck.

I to hate taking the pill so I decided that the mirena was right for me also. Well I had a worst case senerio, my strings coiled up inside of my and I had to have it surgically removed. I was in intense pain for the 8 months I had it in. I have 3 friends that have had nothing but luck with theirs though.

I had the Mirena IUD for a while after my second baby, and I loved it. BUT my husband didn't. I'm not sure if it was the angle of my uterus or what, I tried the string at a few different lengths, but it poked my DH every time we would have sex. The string is pretty stiff and they said it would take at least a year to "soften". I would still recommend it, I don't think very many people have the same problem that I had.

I had great luck with mirena after my first pregnancy. The only side effects i could descern were positive for me (reduced bleeding during menstruation). I think you need to wait a few months until breast milk is good and established, but after that you can have a good experience.

I had the Mirena out in late sept, and got pregnant in early March. However, i deliberately gave myself a few months to get a 'normal' cycle (not necessary according to the literature, but i was still nursing and hadn't actually started a regular cycle again). I don't think that the mirena had any impact on my next conception.

I have this and I spotted for a month and then no periods. It has been a year. I had trouble getting preggo in the first place so once it's removed, my dr. and I have worked out a plan to get things rolling quickly. She also has the mirena (my doctor) and loves it and was the reason I got mine. There was some discomfort when I had it put in but other than that, nothing bad to report.

My experience with Mirena has been wonderful. No side effects, very light periods (just spotting really) and no worries about getting pregnant. We are done having kids and my husband has offered to get snipped, but honestly I plan to get another Mirena after this 5 years is up (I've had it 2 years so far) because I LOVE not having a period. From what I've heard it is not hard to concieve once you get it out. Your system pretty much returns to normal quickly.

i have 3 kids and want to go un-pregnant for at least a few years before trying for our last addition. my sis in law has mirena and it messes with her period so much she hates it. she bleeds in between her periods and its more than spotting and i know the dr tells you it takes up to 6 months for that to go away cuz your body has to adjust to the hormones, but she has had it in for 2 years and still having lots of bleeding issues. i didn't want to use anything with hormones cuz i want another baby and dont want to have to wait for my body to go back to its normal cycle, nor do i want to mess up anything so that it might be harder to conceive. the dr recommended paragard for me since it does the same thing the marena does only doesn't have the hormones. i have had it in for almost a year and i love it. its working well and i have no bleeding issues cuz it doesn't mess with your cycle. when i want to conceive i just have to go and get it out and i can concieve right away with no waiting. i also dont like the pill and i hate using condoms.....i also used the ortho patch and tried the nuva ring. this is the best method by far with no thinking about it or problems with it. good luck and hope this helps. if you have any other questions about my experience with paragard you can message me, but im sure your dr can explain more to you about it too.

I have the Mirena. I've had it in for about 4 months now. I haven't had any problems at all. Getting it inserted was extremely uncomfortable though. I won't lie..it HURT! I did have some cramping after, but nothing too bad. I'm a horrible pill taker (that's how we wound up with our first dauther ;) ) so this was the best option for me.

I know this isn't the answer you were looking for, but I'm using the Paragard IUD, and have been rather pleased with it! No hormones, so your body isn't being put through the hormone rollor coaster. I was on the pill for 10 years, got pregnant 2 months after getting off, and had the paragard put in about 3 months after giving birth. So far so good. We are planning #2 so will get it out soon and see what happens. I've had no issues with this IUD...
