I have an 8 month old that I love dearly. I work full time from home, but take him to a babysitter/good friend of mine about 3 times per week so I can get things done. While he's at her house, as soon as I'm ready to leave, he starts crying, and cries the entire time he is there unless he is napping or being held. At home, he plays with his toys on the floor or in his exersaucer and I don't have to be right there and he is happy as can be. This has been happening for 4-5 months now and not getting any better. Any ideas on why this might be happening and/or what I can do? He was at another babysitter for 2 months and she quit because he always cried. He has been at this babysitter for 2 months now. He is on the same routine as he is at home!

What can I do next?

Hi C.,

Is there anything different about her house that you notice when you walk in? A smell, a feel, do you sneeze or cough? Sometimes it just takes one thing to agitate a baby. Of course he wants you and wants to be home but most little ones calm down after a while. If he is so agitated the whole time you may want to pay close attention next time you go and see if there is anything that might bother you if you stayed there a while.

God bless,

M.

either separation anxiety... or he does not like it at the Babysitter's.

If he is crying the ENTIRE time he is there.... then maybe is not happy there. Or he has not gotten used to it yet.

Some babies take time to adjust.
Does he get fed there adequately?
What is his routine there?
HOW does the Babysitter 'soothe' him when he is there crying the whole time?

4-5 months is a long time to be crying the entire time he is at the Babysitter.
Or maybe he just does not like her. Babies can feel vibes. They will like or not like certain people.

all the best,
Susan

I'm sure it's just a comfort zone issue. Can you have your sitter come to your house as a mother's helper to keep him occupied and safe while you focus on work? I think everyone would be happier.

Is there any way that the sitter can come to your house. My daughter cried a lot when I worked too, but was fine when I was with her. It is seperation anxiety, your baby wants to know that you are there if he needs you. It may last a few more months, my daughter still prefers me to be with her, but is ok if I tell her ahead of time that I will be leaving her (she is almost 3). My other daughter is starting that stage, but is not as upset when I'm gone.
