So, this year I decided I would like to make costumes for me and my husband, and I am wondering what suggestions you may have. I was hoping to find something where I can pick up the majority of the items needed from a thrift store. So far I've thought about either hippy like costumes, or maybe 50's costumes, such as sock-hop and "greaser" costumes for us. Any other ideas would be greatly appreciated. Oh, and it has to be family friendly as our Halloween party is for kids as well.
Thanks so much in advance!!

Buffalo Bill and Calamity Jane, it's usually pretty easy to find western wear.
Dress as each other, you be him and he be you.

We love to do our costumes based on tv shows or movies. We have star trek costumes (I like to go as Nurse Chapel, my hubby's is Next Generation), we have quick Firefly costumes, Jayne was easy to put together for my husband, I went as Kaylee.

Boris and Natasha is always fun, too. Or as a prince and princess.

My husband and his brother do themes every year. Last year they were Jamie and Adam from Mythbusters, this year they're going as a pirate and a ninja.

My friend did a great costume where her husband dressed up as Ed McMahon and she dressed up as a publishers clearing house sweepstakes winner. His was easy--suit, tie, gray wig (or spray) and she made a huge check out of poster board. Hers was a woman, in a robe, curlers etc....
Another one that was great was Mr and Mrs Roper. Easy thrift store clothes.

Crayons. Wear one color from top to toe. Make a cone out of same color construction paper--that is your hat. Make a Crayola label out of more construction paper, tape to your shoulder and your forearm (a little hard to bend your arm but doable).

Playing cards--wear a "sandwich board" with the card drawn on the side you wear in front, and some neutral background on the side you wear on back. King and Queen of hearts would be cute, or joker and king or queen......

Cow--wear white pants and shirt/sweater, put black patches on (can safety-pin them from inside). Make a tail out of rope, fray the ends.

Bunch of grapes--wear something large and purple, stuff it so you look big; attach purple balloons all over. Add leaves of paper or fabric. Or use red or green for those color grapes.

Scarecrow and Dorothy from Wizard of Oz--should be easy to find those things in thrift stores. Stuffed dog for Toto.

Or just scarecrows or hobos.

Have fun!

Cowboys! Super easy, just buy the accessories at walmart or target (usually you can find cowboy boots at thrift stores too). I am not sure if this is too scary, but how about zombies? Painters (get some jeans and white t-shirts, splater them with paint, add a few paint brushes and a painters hat, and you're good to go..or if you can find it coveralls), farmers, You can be a cat, and he can be a dog, vikings, greek goddess/god (wear a toga, sandles, and some accessories). Have fun!
