I have been Type 1 Diabetic for almost 28 years. I have 3 healthy children ages, 4 son, 2 1/2 son, and daugther 8 months. My pregnancies were good but very high risk. My first son was 8 lbs 11 oz, my second son was 10 lbs 12 oz and my daughter was 11 lbs even and all 3 were 2 weeks early. Big babies are typically for diabetis moms. I had c-sections for my last two babies due to their size. I am in good diabetic health but know that my body goes through alot as well as the babies being diabetic and the blood sugar fluctuations...not to mention babies tend to get bigger each pregnancy. My husband and I have always wanted 4 children but are not sure it is the best idea considering my health condition. My edocrinologist in Minneapolis feels that it is ok as long as my blood A1C is at a healthy range prior to conception which would be no problem for me. Are there any other moms out there that have Type 1 diabetes and understand what it is like to carry and deliver a baby with this disease. My family thinks we should be done as why not stop while we are ahead with 3 healthy babies.

What can I do next?

That's tough. I had gestational diabetes and was on insulin during my pregnancy. Now both my daughter and I are at risk of having regular diabetes the rest of our lives. My daughter is my only child and my pregnancy was HORRIBLE at this point in time I donot want anymore children and feel that risking my health or that of my babies is not fair. It's not a guarantee that I would have gestational diabetes again but I don't like taking risks.

It's a tough decision! I was diagnosed with gestational diabetes during my first pregnancy, but found out after I delivered that I am type II diabetic. As I was keeping my A1C in a good range, we decided to give it another go; my second pregnancy was difficult to say the least, due to the diabetes and a couple of other health issues. My husband and I have since decided that our family cannot go through another pregnancy; any future children will be added by adoption. Diabetes adds another dimension completely to pregnancy--risks to you, risks to the baby, A LOT of doctor appointments! Just know that you are not alone...
