Hi, I am interested in purchasing the series of Muzzy dvds for my twin girls to learn spanish. Has anyone used them? If so, please share your thoughts with me. I'd like to know the good as well as the bad things about them.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank you so much for all of your input. Because of all the mixed feedback, I am going to get the dvds from the library and try them out there before paying an arm and a leg for the whole series. In addition, I found out about The Spanish Schoolhouse that has mother's day out programs 2,3,4 & 5 days a week that I'm going to look into for next year. They also have a mommy and me program in the fall that looks interesting. Thank you everyone.

My kids were frightened by Muzzy. That probably sounds silly, but they thought he (and the other characters as well) were monsters. My kids are a bit sensitive in that area though. They don't like to watch "super hero" shows, Scooby Doo, etc. I ordered it straight from the company which had a thirty-day money back guarantee, so I was able to return the program with no problems. The company has a great customer service; I had no hassles returning the program. Good Luck!

Hi Tamara,
What great timing you have with this question! I, too, had recently heard of the Muzzy DVDs and looked into them on the following site http://www.early-advantage.com/.

From the website, it appears that there are a couple of options before purchasing the DVDs: 1) the site mentions "trying" Muzzy free for 30 days, and/or 2) you can possibly find it at your local library.

I chose to check with my library and, although they DIDN'T have it, they were able to borrow it from another library.

Since we just received it a few days ago, I don't have any feedback to give on the program itself, or its ability to teach my little boy Spanish (he's 25 mos old). But, I did learn that many libraries carry it, so hopefully that helps you!!

Good luck!!

EDIT: You may also be interested in putting your twins into "spanish playdates" activities, which I also learned about when researching ways to get my two-year old exposed to Spanish as often, and in as many different ways, as possible. I spoke with Karina Z. (www.bilingualpals.com) at ###-###-####, and she told me that she anticipates starting a set of "playdates" activities starting in June this summer.

If you would like to teach your little one a second language, look into the homeschool and private school curriculum.
There is a store in Lewisville that carries new and used books, dvd, cds, etc. They are www.HomeEducatorsResource.com
I think using actual classroom tools is better than entertainment shows.

We borrowed Muzzy from the library and didn't like it. Go to languageguide.org (there's no www.)for free vocabulary lessons in 21 different languages. I also agree with the person who suggested Rosetta Stone. My daughter used it to learn Spanish and now can write "Spanish Fluent" on job applications.

i bought muzzy off of ebay and saved a lot. you should look there if you are interested. i've had it for a little under 6 months now. The reason that i wanted to get them was because they were completley in spanish. We don't watch them as often as i had intended to. But my 2 (almost 3) year old really likes them and will ask to watch them. She even likes to watch the vocabulary dvds. I can't tell you if they work or not. lol. I know my daughter will say several words in spanish (adios, vamanos, holla, ect.) She can also count to ten in spanish. But i really think that should be credited to dora and diego over muzzy.
one of the things i don't like about it is how outdated it is. The computer takes up a whole room and such. But that kind of thing doesn't matter to my daughter.
My motivation for buying muzzy was mainly for exposure. The more she hears the language the more familiar she will be with it. hope this helps

Hi Tamara,
I purchased it a few years ago and was very excited. Watched it and was horrified by the poor quality of sound and picture. (I think they say they have improved all of that now?).
I immediately called them, said I was packing it up and sending it back.
They made this "video" back in the 70's or 80's and have never redone it. It is not original to the US where our kids have GREAT cartoons (Dora, Diego, etc...- as far as graphics, songs, etc...).
Muzzy is horrible and I don't know how they stay in business.
Just my two cents,
R.
