My 3 & 1/2year old son was just diagnosed with a baker's cyst, behind his left knee, from the pediatrician and referred to a pediatric surgeon. Google is a scary place to look and I was wondering if anyone has any advice? I don't have an appoitment with the surgeon for another week, and as any mom knows, that can be quite a lot of time to worry.
thanks,

What can I do next?

Dear C.: Don't worry! A Bakers Cyst goes away as they grow older. My 13 year old son had one when he was about 3 years old. I did a sonogram every year until it disappeared, and in the sonogram you could see how it kept getting smaller with time. He never felt it, and it never bothered him when he excercised, and he has always been in sports and is a great athlete. My doctor was never worried, so I did not worry two much, specially as we compared the size year after year.
At the time, I visited a pediatric orthopedic surgeon and he recommended that we kept watching it in case it grew in size, which would have been unlikely. He said he would not recommend surgery unless it bothered him to walk or excercise. Since he never complained, we never did it.

Hi,
Don't have a kid with the problem, but I'm a Physical Therapist who has seen several people with them. They don't always need surgery, sometime respond well to therapy. Whenever you see the doctor again, you could ask if he/she thinks therapy could help.

Just google bakers cyst and get all the research you can, and go to the doctor with your concerns.
Remember it's ok to be concerned; but worry gets us nowhere but stressed...
Blessings, S.

Honestly, I would get a second opinion. My brother-in-law was just diagnosed with one on his right knee and was told to keep it elevated and take aspirin. Granted, he is an adult...but his had ruptured and it is doing fine.

My son last year who was 7 was diagnosed with a baker's cyst behind his knee. We too went to see a pediatric surgeon. The doctor looked at it, felt it and told us it would go away and not to worry about. Sure enough one day I noticed it was not there anymore...I can't remember the exact time span from the time I noticed it and when it was gone but it might have been 6 months - 9 months. Hopefully this relives your worry a little. I totally understand your feelings as Google is definitely a scary place and I was in your shoes.
