Seeking Information on Mattress Protectors

We have recently moved my daughter to a "big girl bed" and unfortunately she has come down with the flu. She still wears diapers at night so we didn't even think about getting a mattress protector - well, after three rounds of changing the sheets this flu has taught us that we need to get something to protect the mattress. Especially since she will likely have some accidents in the future when we do start to do night time potty training.

There are a lot of different types out there and they really vary in cost. The "premium" ones are "breathable" and cost around $60. The vinal ones are only $10 but they are louder and plastic feeling. Is it worth it to get the $60 cover? Should I get two? I have only found them on the internet - is there somewhere to get these in the metro area that I can drive to?

Thanks in advance for your help!

I just got the best one that IKEA had, for not much $$ and it has worked fine, and washes and dries nicely.

I have purchased the waterproof mattress pads (they fit like a fitted sheet) that Target sells. They work very well on protecting the mattress and are quiet, but the sides tend to "melt" in a hot dryer. They are inexpensive, but I've been through a few of them because of this problem. I now just air-dry them.

I also purchased one at slumberland for a new mattress we just bought. Before deciding on whether to spend a lot or get a cheaper one, consider how long you think you'll have that mattress. An investment in a good protector might make it last longer. $10 per year isn't so bad.

We have the cheap vinyl ones for the mattress (which seem to work better on huge volumes of liquid like peeing the bed or a leaky sippy cup). They are aroun $5 at Target. We have the breathable ones for the pillow, which seem to work better where you need breathability. Target sells these, too, for around $10-15. This combination works perfectly for us without breaking the bank.

The fabric ones are definitely worth the cost! We got ours for our daughter's bed from HOM Furniture when we bought the mattress. You can probably buy them from any store that sells mattresses. We only bought one and it washes up/dries quickly when we do need to wash it.

Slumberland is where we got ours. they come with a lifetime gurantee. if they leak through to the mattress they replace the whole mattress. We payed $80 for a Queen protector and got our daughters for free (not sure the cost) I would totally invest in it though=)Good luck, the flu is no fun with the little ones=(

We have had the cloth ones since my daughter was born (she now now almost 5). We invested in a second one for when one is in the wash.... We bought ours at Babies R Us and the bought our second child at Sears. I am sure they can be found where mattresses and baby/child stuff if found.

Maybe even Once Upon a Child?

Good luck!
