Seeking Ideas for Clothes, Etc. Swap

Hi Moms,

I have decided with a friend to cohost a clothing and other items swap. We will make it into a girls' night. Everyone we invite will bring clothes, shoes, jewelry, household items, etc.that they don't want anymore, but are in good condition and we will put them out. Then we'll all go "shopping". That way all of us get "new" things, but don't spend a cent. Has anyone ever done this before?
I'm wondering about "rules". Do we all grab all the items at once, pick numbers, or what? We're all trying to be frugal and also it's a fun excuse to have a girls' night. Please let me know if you have any ideas or suggestions.
Thanks so much,

D.

Here's what we do,
and you have to totally get into it:

Everybody sits in a circle and each person goes through their clothes , one article at a time, and "sells" it to everyone by really talking it up, and even picking certain people in the circle they think it would be perfect for!!

We have so much fun you wouldn't believe!!

Enjoy,
A.

What a great idea! This is perfect for these difficult economic times. I would suggest having a pot luck dinner- have everyone bring something and have it a bit co-ordinated so you don't get six deserts. Then, pick numbers to look over the items . It sounds like fun. Maybe I will copy your great idea. J. K.

Sounds fun! When you invite people, try to have similar sized people in mind. That way you won't have 1 person who is a size 14 and everyone else is a size 10...

D.,

My brother and his family go to St. Thomas More, a Catholic Church in N. Austin. I've never been, so I don't know the specifics, but they have a big "swap" once or twice a year, very similar to what you're describing (it might just be for clothing - again, not quite sure).
I don't know if they allow non-parishoners to participate, but it might be worth checking into, if only to find out how they run it.
