Seeking Good, Reasonably Priced Mattress

Hello mamas (and papas)!

Kiddo is 4.5 and we finally ordered him a bed. It's going to be delivered Tuesday. Now, I just have to get stuff for it! Like sheets, bigger blanket, and especially a mattress. But I have no idea how to buy one for a kid.

Needs to be twin size, no box spring (he is getting a slat bed). I guess not too tall or soft since he has been sleeping on the mattress from his crib his entire life. Any suggestions? I don't want to/can't spend a fortune and would like to stay under $120. Is that reasonable? Are there any brands/types you have specific experience with that you love or hate? I already bought a mattress cover that is waterproof and hypoallergenic, just in case there is a spill or something.

It's Labor Day weekend so of course there are sales! Although seriously, is there ever NOT a sale on mattresses? :)

What can I do next?

Well you could check at Nebraska Furniture Mart. They always have deals on mattresses. Or if you don't want to drive that far, we were in Costco the other day, and they had some Serta (I think) mattresses there for pretty cheap, but I don't recall seeing any twin size. You could probably look it up online and see what they have. Or you could even look on Craigslist for some. I have sold some of my beds on Craigslist, and have even bought a newer one at a garage sale. Good luck!!

I'm not sure what you will find for under $120. That is pretty dirt cheap. But I could be wrong. If it were me, I would be expecting more in the neighborhood of $200-$300. Even for just the mattress---they often have less than a $50 difference to throw in the box springs.

I bought a foam topped full size set for my son this spring, for $399. Bought a very similar set (pillow top) for our daughter (also full size set) also for $399, including free delivery and carry away of the old stuff. But I took a good month or four shopping around. A twin set for our daughter 7 or 8 years ago cost us $300. And it wasn't a great mattress either. But, I didn't have much time to shop around for it--as we were GIVEN a twin bedroom SET for her (tall dresser, chest of drawers with mirror, night stand, poster head/foot boards and rails. The whole shebang--we just had to get a mattress, and we didn't get but a couple days notice that we were getting any of it!).
It wore out quickly and we should've replaced long before we finally did (last December). Got her a new (full sized) bed, too. :)

I know your little guy is small now, but trust me, he will grow. And quickly. If you go bottom of the barrel cheap, he will feel it by age 7 or 8. And while that seems like a long time away, it really isn't. A mattress should last a lot longer than 4-5 years. It will be worth it to spend a little more for something that will last him 8 or 9 years.

One other suggestion: buy a set of whatever sheets you intend to put on the bed and see how deep the pockets are. Most sheets sets have much deeper pockets than they used to have, and they won't stay on or fit properly on a too thin mattress. It is next to impossible to find sheets that are less deep than about 12-14 inches. Unless maybe if you get the "character" sheets. But he will outgrow those over time, too....

Check Sears. We got a pretty cheap one just a month or so ago for my son. It was mattress and box springs and I don't think we paid more than $200-50. I can't remember right now. It's pretty comfie...nothing crazy, but it works just fine and I've laid on it and it's okay.

I agree that you should absolutely have a mattress cover! I like to have a plastic cover that zips over the whole mattress and then a regular mattress pad that I take off and wash. Plus, the fabric one will keep the plastic one from making noises and crinkling when your son moves around.

ask them if they have any of last year's models, or retired floor models. we got our queen pillowtop for about $300 i think - and it is SOOOO AWESOME :) they also had box springs (queen) for $200 but we didn't need one. call around and ask. can't hurt! often they put those in the back and don't advertise them...
