Seeking Feedback on Select Comfort, Tempurpedic Beds & Traditional Beds

After 18 years, hubby and I are desperately in need of a new King bed. We wake up more exhausted and achy then when we go to sleep. We've checked out both Select Comfort and Tempurpedic beds, but have discovered negative feedback about both on a number of websites. Have any of you out there had either of these beds for a year or more? If so, please advise about your experiences. Also, if you have a traditional inner spring mattress that you love, please advise. Thank you, thank you!!

What can I do next?

We have a sleep number bed and LOVE it. We have had it for over 5 yrs now and never a problem. In fact, when the air pump got damaged in an electrical storm, they offered us a replacement under the 10 yr wty. We paid a pro-rated charge based on how long we had it and we have a new pump. I have major back issues and have never had a bad nights sleep since getting it, even when pregnant.

We have had a select comfort bed for about 2 years. We got it when I was pregnant with my son and was having a lot of trouble sleeping. I never have had trouble sleeping on it. The only negative thing I can say is that I now am more reluctant to travel because I hate sleeping on any other bed! My parents finally bought one recently too and they love it as well. They got the highest level one and the only semi-complaint I have heard about that is the memory foam in it makes it a little warm.
So, we LOVE it and we still think it is the best thing we have ever bought!

J.,
We bought a new mattress a year ago and LOVE it. Before telling you which mattress we chose, I will share with you our extensive research:
Reviews say the Simmons Beautyrest line is the best overall mattress for couples. Each of the five products in the Beautyrest line has a no-flip design and the Simmons Triton Foundation, which both help prevent mattress sagging. The Beautyrest line has perimeter edge support and pocketed coils, which minimize the transfer of movement from one sleeping partner to the other. Those who weigh more than about 250 pounds may need additional support.
Tempur-Pedic mattresses are on a bit of a rage but proof that foam mattresses are healthier than traditional innerspring beds, however, is lacking. Owners also report that foam beds require some adjustment time. They aren't as 'squishy' or as plush as traditional mattresses, and some owners say the Tempur-Pedic can feel cold or too firm.
Sleep Number uses inflatable air chambers to adjust firmness with a remote control. However, consumers reports said that this bed is not as comfortable as expected, and that it is too expensive.
Reviews say Simmons DeepSleep innerspring line is the best choice if you’re on a budget.
After much trial and error and returning them before the 30 day switch was up because they were either too soft, too springy, too firm,etc....we finally went with one of the higher end Sealy Posturepedics with a pillowtop. With tax and everything, it was about 2500 but its incredible and well worth it. We've been sleeping soundly for a year! :)

Well, I have had the same problem and I have been married for 28 years!! I have two fantastic children who had to sleep with us off and on (and they wore our bed out, hahaha)
We have the 'Numbers bed' It is wonderful. I have never had a better nights sleep. AND I compared prices and did not think that there was a big difference between the highend other bed companies.
Good Luck!

I've had a tempurpedic for 8 months and I love it. strangely enough, the first month or 2 hubby and I weren't completely comfortable but I think our bodies had to adjust to the very different support this mattress provides. After those first couple of months we got adjusted and now sleep so soundly. I have another friend with one also and the only thing either of us would commment on is--sorry for TMI--but it definitely affects your sex life :) it's more of a workout but I think it's better! :)

We've had a Sealy Posturepedic for over 10 years now. I'm ready to replace it as I'm noticing that I'm not as comfortable as I used to be, but I'll probably replace it with another Sealy Posturepedic. Since we're in the market for a new set now, I've considered the Select Comfort and the Tempurpedic beds, but the cost is too prohibitive.

We've been very happy with our mattress set and feel the value for the money is excellent. The bed we sleep in when we visit my sister-in-law and her family is a very expensive Stearns and Foster bed, but I can't say it is any more comfortable than our Sealy.

Be warned, mattress set mark-ups are insane! When we bought our Sealy, over 10 years ago, it was listed at about $750 at The Room Store (I believe that's where we bought it). After "negotiating", we paid $450 including the bed frame and delivery.

Good luck! :-)

My father has arthritis in his neck, and his doctor recommended a Tempurpedic. Obviously, I don't sleep on it since it's my dad's bed, but he says that after sleeping on that bed, he'd never go back to a 'regular' one. He used to wake up stiff and in pain, and had several exercises to loosen up in the morning; now, he doesn't have stiffness or pain when he wakes up, and just does the exercises to keep limber. I know that they feel different from traditional beds, and tend to be more expensive -- but we're looking into buying one for the back benefits.

You had asked for info about traditional inner spring mattresses - my husband and I purchased a couple this past year. We had a Simmons Beautyrest - it was great at first, but it ended up being defective. We returned it and purchased a Stearns and Foster and coulnd't be happier. We both like softer mattresses. While the Stearns and Foster is pricier, it has proved to be a much better buy. We couldn't be happier.
Good luck!

Hi J.,
For several years we've slept on a mattress from Costco. It's good and works, but we upgraded to a kingsize bed and decided to go with Tempurapedic last June. We love it. My husband has back problems. And I've been pregnant the past 9 months. It is an extremely comfortable bed. The mattress doesn't move when one person shifts positions--which translates to better sleeping for two. Also, I don't toss and turn like I used to (well...that's not exactly true this last month... I'm due tomorrow, but otherwise the sleep has been great). My husband noticed he sleeps better too.

Anyways, it is a small fortune, but we don't regret it for a minute. After all the hours we spend sleeping, it's worth a good night sleep.

I have an air filled chamber bed that didn't come from Sleep Number. We did some research on the internet and found a place that was significantly cheaper. Anyways, we've had the bed for about a year now and we have no major complaints. Most people complain about the 'dividing line' down the middle of the bed. While you do notice it some, we put an egg crate foam over the top of the air chambers and that reduced the problem quite a bit. When we inflate or deflate the air chambers you can feel them going up and down so the egg crate doesn't diminish that for you. As far as aches and pains, with our old mattress my lower back always hurt and I would get shooting pains up my foot everytime I got out of bed. I have not had any of these problems since getting the new bed. I am a bit worried that one day something will happen to the air chambers like another poster has said, but for now all is good.

J.,

My husband and I have a sleep number. We have had it for over a year. We love it. My husbands in the Air Force and he comes home really tried and achy. The first night he slept on it he fell alseep right away with no tossing or turning. I have a bad back due to my last 2 pregnacy. I have never felt better. Trying to sleep on a regular bed is almost impoosible now.

The only bad thing is is if your kids jump on your bed they can pop it.

Also you have to put it toghter yourself. Yup. It is deliverd in two boxes. and you will think that this is not your bed and try and send it back( I tried) Once it read dthe directions and thngs it is very very easy to put together.

hope this helps

We bought a new bed about 2 years ago. We looked into several different types, including Tempurpedic and Select Comfort as well as many, many traditional beds. I did quite a bit of research prior to shopping. We (my husband and I) even slept on a Tempurpedic for a couple of nights (2 or 3) at a friend's house while they were out of town (they had had it for about a mos. or so before we tested it). Then we spent two days window shopping and in store testing before we finally bought our dream bed. Here is what we found, kind of lenghty, but I would have wanted to know all of this when I bought mine to save me time.

We did NOT like the Tempurpedic at all. After sleeping on it for several nights, we found the followign: My husband is hot natured and it held body heat next to his body (because of all of the memory foam) and he was constantly hot. Not only that, but after sleeping for a while (we are mostly side sleepers, but also some back and a little tummy), both of us found that it put our limbs "to sleep" (cut off blood flow) and in turn, woke us up mid-night. And even though it softened up after a while, every time you moved to a different position, it felt hard again and took a while to re-soften. Furthermore, the friends of ours that had the bed soon returned it not long after we after we slept on it for the same reasons we didn't like it at a money loss to them. The cost was garanteed, but there is re-stocking fees and other charges.
As for the Select comfort, we liked it ok, but I am an indesisive and "perfectionist" type person and could totally see myself messing with the sleep number until I drove myself crazy. Even in the store, I had a hard time finding true comfort even with the associate working the controls and me just going on feel alone. Maybe after finding that perfect comfort level, I would be ok for the most part, but we were looking at several life changes (pregnancies, possible joint surgeries, etc)that would more than likely keep changing our comfort level and quite honestly, I didn't want to keep messing with a bed.

We found our favorite bed at Mattress Giant (We also looked at several traditional furniture stores, Mattress Firm and Sleep Experts). It is a Kings Down King Size pillow-top mattress with extra side support (for when you sit on the edge of the mattress) and made right here in the good ole USA and still hand crafted. According to several sales associates at two different Mattress Giants, it is the only remaining bed handcrated in the USA. Even Sertas, Sterns & Fosters, and other name brands have sold out and are not crafted the way they used to be. We got on it and tested it several times in two different stores and it just always felt comfy - soft but supportive. It has a small amount of memory foam in it for comfort, but not enough to hold in heat. It was so supportive to our bodies that lying on our side, you didn't even need a pillow to be comfy. It was quite expensive to our budget, but not any more than the Tempurpedic or Select Comfort and the payment plan was awesome (no interest for a year or more maybe up to three if I remember right). Plus, we caught ours during a sale and it came with lots of freebies (3 free pillows, mattress pad, and extra sturdy frame since it is quite a heavy bed and free delivery). And we lucked out and found a floor model at a much discounted price because it had a slight scuff on the box spring when delivered to a previous customer's house and they rejected it while still in the plastic (they mostly sell out of the warehouse, but if you buy at Matress Giant (or other places too possibly), ask if any floor models are available at that or other stores or for any that were rejected by other customers at a lesser price - we just lucked into that part on our third visit because we didn't know to ask. All major warranties were still in tact too, even with the circumstances. And it has a 20 yr warranty compared to most beds that only have 10 or 15.

We are still very happy with our bed and we are very glad we got a King size too(that was a decission we had a hard time making too). It was well worth the price and has gotten me as comfortably as possible through 2 pregnancies. The only major drawbacks were, like said earlier, a little pricy (but it will last 20 yrs and you can't put a price on good sleep-it effects every aspect of your life: happiness, health and productivity), and it is very heavy (no biggie unless you plan on moving it). They deliver and set up for free, but we have moved once since then and will be moving again soon, this time to a bedroom on a second story and my husband will have fun getting the bed and box spring up there, I am sure. Other than that, we are totally happy and are loyal customer of Mattress Giant for accessories since then also (mattress pads, bed frames for other beds, etc).

Hope this info help and if you want, e-mail me with any other questions - I don't mind!

Best of Luck!
T.

My mother has a tempurpedic bed but we just added a 3" Healthy Foundations memory foam topper onto our Seally Posturpedic and we love it. We prefer it to the tempurpedic. I am 7 months pregnant and was having a terrible time with my hips and shoulders hurting until we added the memory foam topper. Even when we replace our bed, I think we will continue with the traditional innerspring mattress and just put a topper on it.

Dear J. - I'm anxious to hopefully hear some of the recommendations that you'll be receiving as we need a new one soon too. However, I will tell you that we have the Sleep Number bed. We loved it for the first year, but shortly thereafter the air-filled chambers stopped working correctly and we have been sleeping on an inadequately filled bed ever since. Unfortunately, we're on a very tight budget right now and have had to just put up with it for many years now. So, unfortunately I cannot recommend the Sleep Number bed...as I'm not sure how long they last and we have a horrible sleep situation right now. Here's to a good night rest for us all soon. Many Blessings - L.

Hi J.,

We have been using Tempurpedic for over four years without any problems. Initially it did take a little getting used to. It does feel a little too hard at lower temperatures but after a couple of minutes it does adjust to you body heat making it very comfortable. I went through two pregnancies without any additional pillows or support with this mattress.

We bought a Select Comfort Sleep number bed 9 or 10 years ago from the store at the Parks Mall. We got a King size, mid to high range bed (if I remember correctly.) It just doesn't have the pillow top. The dividing line down the middle is my only complaint. It is more noticable when my dh and I try to snuggle in the middle. Otherwise we love it. I has held up very well and the customer service has been great. When we bought it, the foundation (what replaces the box springs) was a different design than we have now. About 5 years ago, the original foundation we had started squeeking. I called the company and they sent us a complete new base. We didn't have to pay a prorated price or even have to pay shipping. I would give the bed a 9 out of 10 rating and recommend it.
