Hi everyone,

I am on the hunt for a new matress for me and my Fiance.
He's a bigger guy so I want to find a good quality matress.

We heard from couple of our friends that they love there tempurpedic matress but reading online I see others hate it.
We just really need a good quality matress.

Thank you.

I would go to the stores and try them out. I personally don't like them. I would get a good quality mattress with a mattress topper that you like. good luck!

I consider myself a 'professional' when it comes to this problem. lol. I'm 125lbs at 5'7" and hubby is just over 300lbs at 6'4". Most of hubby's weight is bone density and muscle mass - he's a big dude. After spending approx $10,000k on 3 mattresses the first 5 years of our marriage, I've been dubbed his little Princess (as in Princess and the Pea.)P

We always made sure to buy high quality, brand named mattresses, like Stearns and Foster, which are known for having solid frames that won't bend under weight. But that wasn't the real problem...any sort of pillow top or temperpedic type top would result in a concave area on hubby's side of the bed, which I'd end up rolling toward in the middle of the night. If he ever slept on my side of the bed, the concave would NOT bounce back completely, and I'd get aches up my spine from not being able to lay straight while sleeping. We even tried the solid latex mattresses, which are very expensive and extremely heavy and claim to always bounce back. Not true.

Here was our solution and it's still working after 3 years - we purchased two twin sized, Xtra long, firm, mattresses, posterpedic brand with flat tops (NO pillow tops). 2 twin XL's = King size. So they will fit current bed frame. Getting a firm mattress is important for the support. Because I needed something a little softer for pressure points, we also purchased a 1 inch topper (first we tried a 3 inch topper - big mistake - concave!)

This was the cheapest set we bought so far, and has lasted us the longest! I have also made a rule that hubby is to NEVER sleep on my side of the bed. But with the firm mattresses, I haven't even seen concave on his side. VERY happy with this purchase :-)

As for temperapedic - we came real close to getting one of those because of the 'no bounce' thing, but they WILL leave concaves with larger people, and they are heat-producing which I thought wouldn't be comfortable for my big guy. So I don't recommend them.

Really hope this helps, and if I've saved someone from making all the mistakes we did, then all the money we spent on mattresses will have been worth it ;-)

Sincerely,
Princess (of Princess and the Pea)

I like our tempurpedic because 1- I'm not sore in the morning and 2- I don't want to linger in bed, it's supportive but not comfy cooshie so when the alarm goes off getting out of bed is easier.

I like our mattress.

I didn't like the Temperpedic but my husband did. I found it too hot. I also didn't like the way you sink into it. They say it is supposed to be supportive of your curves but my back always hurt in the morning. I sleep mostly on my stomach but I roll around a lot. Frequently when I wake up, I'm on my back.

I wanted to get a Sleep Number bed but my husband called it an overpriced air mattress and wouldn't hear of it. So we just got a high quality pillow-top mattress with old-school coils. We both sleep really well on it.

It is all about preferences. I didn't like the tempurpedic because my hubby already radiates heat because God gave him his own heater! We purchased a sleep number bed. It took us awhile to adjust to it, but now when we go out of town we remember why we bought it in the first place. We slept on a sealy firm for 10 years. DH hurt his back and slept on the couch for months. I didn't get married to sleep alone. We bought the bed and his number is 20 and mine is 45...It is wonderful!

I have tested the tempurpedic but it always seemed hard to me...I ended up purchasing the sleep number and I LOVE IT! I even talked my in laws in to one and they love theirs too! It's almost the same price as a new mattress but will and should last 20 plus years. My mom still has one that is 30 years old and it is still in great condition.

temperpedic is great, but not if you get hot while you sleep. The material traps heat, so if you keep it really cold in your house or are really cold all the time, go for it, but if not, i wouldnt get one. I am hot natured and sometimes i stay at a friends beach house and she has the temperpedic mattresses, i never get any sleep on them

~~~ i just read that you said posturpedic, not temperpedic...........sorry.
We have a Tempurpedic and love it. So I guess that really is the problem with mattresses-- it's all personal preference. I don't notice that it's really any hotter than any other mattress we have ever slept on-- I'm always hot when I sleep no matter what. We had this thing in Phoenix for 2 summers and it never really bothered me. We just slept with lighter covers. It does take some getting used to because it's not like other mattresses, but it has completely resolved my hip pain that I was having and my husband's back pain has noticeably lessened. I will say that it is not comfortable for sleeping on your stomach at all. It will not allow it! But if you're a back or side sleeper, then it's fantastic. One of the things I liked about it most was that it does not trap dust or allergens. It has cut down on our stuffy noses that we used to wake up with in the morning. When you do go shop, the mattress guys don't mind if you lay there for awhile, so give them all a good run. Good luck! :-)
I hated it. If you buy it in person, you can not return it. When I checked into it years ago, they told me if I bought online I could return it.
We went to a hotel that had the mattress. I made it less than 2 hours.
My husband and I checked out in the morning and decided no way.
I t was hot and they claimed you have to lay still for 20 minutes till the form conforms. I toss and turn so you can imagine.
We had all Select Comfort beds, which I started disliking after awhile. My husband still has his half of the bed Select Comfort. Of a dozen people who slept in our guest beds, two bought Select Comfort. Ten didn't.
I also hate my Denver Mattress set from Furniture Row. It gets fuzzballs and has a coating that seems to retain heat and make me sweat.
well a posturepedic mattress, such as a Sealy Posturepedic is much different than a Tempurpedic mattress. I happen to have a Tempurpedic, and absolutely love it. They do say it takes a couple of weeks to get used to it, mainly for the fact that there is no "bounce" to it, which was the main reason why I wanted it. I'm a very light sleeper and any movement other than mine keeps me awake or wakes me up, very frustrating! Now that I have made the transition and love it, I can't imagine sleeping in anything else. There are several grades of quality, the higher you go the more expensive obviously, but they are also more ventilated and breath so they don't get hot. If you are getting a king-size, it will set you back a pretty penny, like $4-5000. I have a queen, middle grade and it was $3000. They also have a great warranty and guarantee the mattress will never indent more than 3/4 of an inch. Which was huge for me, since the last mattress I bought acquired a huge dent within the first year, the kind you have to roll out of. Buying a mattress can be daunting, just think about what you want out of it and go look and try them out. Good Luck!
we bought a Natural Response mattress from "the Dump" I LOVE it!!! we laid on it in the store for at least 20 minutes (the recommended time) I was having terrible back pain and problems with my Arthritic hip, and while we were laying on it in the store about 15 minute in to our 20 minutes my back cracked all the way up my spine and I felt instantly better, I was sold, we got the firm pillow top, but they have several types. It is a latex bed and will fit to your body similar to the temperpedic without the sinking down in feeling, I can easily roll over in the night and there is really no transfer of movement, I'm a very light sleeper and my hubby wakes up way before I do and we have no problem. It also does not cause you to get HOT like the tempurpedic mattress does, so that was another perk especially for my Hubby. we got a King size bed and it was reasonably priced, I shopped around quite a bit. but I LOVE it, and I my back is 10 times better and my hip rarely ever hurts any more. We are Very Pleased!!! we have had it for almost a year and you can not see any dips in the mattress at all. when we were shopping we googled mattress ratings and most all of them recommended the latex bed as the most comfortable, so that is why we went looking for it over the temperpedic, but we were open to the spring mattresses also, we just found the latex to be far better than any of the others we tried.
Good luck!
We love our Tempurpedic mattress, but we bought one close to the top of the line. I don't know if that makes any difference or not, but I have a friend that hates hers and she bought the cheapest model. My hubby complained about it making him hot at first, but that seemed to go away. At first it seemed like I had to either break it in or I just had to get used to it, still not sure which. We have had it for almost 4 years.
The super nice thing about it is that both sides look & feel the same even after 4 years even though I am small and he is a big guy. With a regular mattress, my husband's side was breaking down and he felt like he was falling out of the bed. And that wasn't a cheap mattress either.
It also helps that you don't feel the other person rolling around. It's not as perfect as the commercial with the wine glass because there are sheets on the bed, but so much better than the regular mattress. I also don't mind the kids jumping on it because they don't bounce off like they do on a regular mattress.
Tempurpedic does allow you to return the mattress after a month or so and you get your money back except they keep $200 plus the delivery charge. That was the case 4 years ago, so you might double check.
If you get it, buy 2 of the waterproof mattress covers. They are $100 each, but worth every penny!
Good luck! We had to lay on every mattress in town before we decided....
