I am caring for some friends children and need a few fun ideas to distract them with if they are not behaving. The childrens ages are 2 - 8 yrs. It was easier to be more stern with my own children.

What can I do next?

My favorite sites:

This web site has everything I ever want to know about fun.

About halfway down is activities. You can also put in different age groups, just click on big kids at the top.

I don't know what free activities there are in your area but check with the local library and ask what they are doing for Summer programs. Our local theatre has free movies every Tuesday at various times, there is a free lunch program and the kids love going to the kig kids school (it is at the local Jr. High). We stay busy every day of the week with different activities.

Start with fun games *before* they start misbehaving. Otherwise, you're rewarding bad behavior!

Anyway, there's a great book I'm reading called Baby Days, which will be perfect for the 2-year old. For the 8-year old, well, I'm just not there yet, though Baby Days does have suggestions with every activity on how to include older siblings. But you'll probably find some books at the library to help you with older kids' activities specifically. Asking a librarian is a great way to focus the search with the right keywords, etc.

My 3 year old loves the peel & stick foam stickers, she puts them on construction paper. Coloring is always fun for all ages. Sprinklers are good for outside fun, or a small plastic pool, and those foam noodles. Libraries usually have movies you can rent for free with your library card, or you can bring them there to pick out books too. If you don't mind messes, you can try play-doh, or finger painting, or baking something like cookies & cutting out/decorating them.

Sounds like a great opportunity to clean out your closet. Give them a box of your old clothes to play in-they can even put on a fashion show for you-break out the camera. When you're finished watching them, you can just box the clothes up and take them to your local donation bin. It's a great time of year for outdoors too. Maybe purchase a small plastic pool-even the 8 yr old will enjoy this if he doesn't have the option of a larger pool. You can pick up some water toys at the local dollar store. When my kids were small, we'd have lunch, lather on the sunscreen, and play in the water for about an hour-a little tub time afterwards to remove all of the sunscreen that was left over and then we'd lay in the floor and watch cartoons or a movie until we fell asleep for a nap-yep, me too-I had 4 little ones and it was exhausting! Another activity that we had in the afternoons would be my wonderful foot rubs! I'd place a towel on the couch and give each kid a dab of lotion. (usually the most active toddler got to have my feet in their lap) They would dab the lotion on my feet and legs and doodle/draw pictures in it. They were entertained within reaching distance and I could actually watch tv or flip through a magazine without having to wonder what they were into.

Good luck-I have 2 grandchildren now and know exactly how you feel! They have a big age gap though-grandaughter is about to turn 12 and grandson is 3 months-so we have to try on different options now. Usually when the youngest is down for his long nap of the day, I keep some really easy muffin mix or something on hand because my granddaughter likes to cook. I handle the oven part, but she does all of the mixing and taste testing! We have a blast!

Kids love to be outside so I would maybe get some cheap outdoor activities for summertime. We have a blow up kiddie pool and a beach ball sprinkler in our backyard that keeps my daugther busy for hours in the evenings. Also, bake some sugar cookies or cupcakes and set up the table with icing and sprinkles and let them decorate their cookie/cupcake. For more educational type activities try Mardels or another learnign store. They have some fun weekly book activities for kids (ex: flower week, where all your activities are flower related). Have a great summer!
