Seeking Advice on Tutors

I have a 12 year old daughter in the seventh grade who seems to be struggling very much. Every night I help with homework, check assignments online, and I correspond with teachers on a weekly basis. In spite of all of this, she continues to do poorly in school (D's or F's). I am at a loss as to what I should do. I have taken away privelages and made her have an earlier bedtime. My question is has anyone else been through this and was there a way to turn it around. Is there maybe a really great tutor out there who could help us. I need way to make her get organized and apply herself to school without making all of us miserable.

What can I do next?

Try Sylvan. They're usually cheaper than hiring a private tutor (although not always), and they really work for most kids. They can help with time management skills, organization, and study skills, as well as tutoring in the actual subject material. Most Sylvan Learning Centers are great places--I used to work in one, and my cousin directs one south of St. Louis. Again, they don't work for every kid, but I think it would be worth a try for you. Good luck!

Have you tried talking to the school counselor and seeing if she can visit the counselor on a regular basis? I noticed my daughter had some changes in her grades and I contacted her school counselor. I found that she was going through some self esteem issues and not being able to easily make friends at her new school. My daughter really likes talking to her and she seems to help. I think "worries" outside of schoolwork often keep kids from doing their best at school. You can also find out if there are other things happening that might be upsetting her like kids teasing her or other types of problems. They may also be able to suggest a tutor.

Hi,
I'm curious as to what subject your daughter is struggling in. I am a high school teacher in the Shawnee Mission School District and teach both Reading and English. I'd be happy to help if she needs assistance in either subject. Does she struggle with test taking? If she has anxiety issues it might be a good idea to have her take tests in the resource room without disruption and without pressure. I have a young lady that takes a long time to complete assigments, tests, etc. and feels so pressured to finish, that she rushes and does a poor job. I suggested that she stay after school with me to complete tests or that she visit the resource room to work. Anyway, you may have already tried all of this. Please let me know if I can be of any assistance and good luck!

Stephanie,

Know how this goes! I'm sure you're frustrated personally and sad for your daughter. Call my friend Lori Willens, at ###-###-####. She not only tutors, but she is a professional education specialist and can help you figure out what is going on with your daughter, and what the best solution is. If it's something other than tutoring, she'll direct you to the right people, too. She's amazing!

Tell her S. P. gave you her name...and good luck...

Most large school districts keep a list of tutors. I'd call and ask, or ask your daughters teacher for suggestions! She may know a co-worker who does tutoring & they 'd be up to date on the curriculum.
