Seeking Advice on Trundle Beds

Hey Mommas, I'm wondering if anyone has some tips on trundle beds. I'm moving my 2 1/2 year old out of her crib and into a twin size bed this summer. I would like to get a trundle bed so that she can easily have a friend sleep over. I want a good quality bed that will last her until she heads of to college. In my dreams, I'd love to buy a Pottery Barn Kids bed, but they're so expensive. I've tried searching on line and haven't seen anything even close to PBK. I would like wood (not metal), white and a solid headboard (instead of something like slats with space between. I don't mind buying online but I'd like to be able to go to a shop and see it in person. Thanks for any tips!

i got a great trundle bed at IKEA. it's a white daybed with wainscoting. when we have guests, i just pull out the trundle and it serves as a double-bed. it also has 3 very large drawers for storage underneath. they have other styles there too. only downside might be that it's a little high to climb into.

Hi C.,

We bought one just like you describe at JCPenney. It was several years ago but it is probably still available. It is a wonderful bed and has held up well!! Lots of sleepovers.

good luck,

K.

Check out Ikea - they have great beds. Bonus: no boxspring to buy as they are platform style beds.

I would try ashley furniture. I have one for my daughter for the life of me I can't remember were I ordered it from. I will check when I go home to see if I have anything. This bed is great. She has had it for almost 4 years now.

I was just looking at trundle beds last night for the same reason. I like Gothic Cabinet Craft's designs and I think their work is solid. Buying it unfinished is a lot cheaper. They have a daybed style trundle which, I figured, if my daughter grows to hate in a few years, can always be a nice piece of furntiure for somewhere else in the apartment.

Hi. I am actually going today to Raymour and Flanagan to finalized the purchase of my daughter's new bedroom set. We are buying a Stanley Young America set. While at the store, I did see some trundle beds by this manufacturer. I think you will be happy with the construction quality. Good luck!

Have you tried Gothic Cabinet? They're handmade and great quality! I don't know if they do trundle beds, but I'm sure you could google them, and you'd get their site.
Good luck!

Have you thought about buying an unfinished wood bed and painting it yourself? Those are usually a lot cheaper. Here's one I found with a trundle bed, no slats:

Hi!
I also wanted a trundle bed for the same reason. Got the actual bed - light wood sleigh bed - so pretty in Sukon's - a children's store in Queens (not cheap). I have to tell you the trundle mattress has to be thin as the good mattresses don't fit under the bed - not worth it, you are better off using the trundle part as extra drawer space.
If and when you have kids over for a sleepover, you are probably better off investing in a good air mattress - it is bigger and probably more comfortable. The mattress was a complete disappointment and was not worth it.
Wishing you well,
Celia in Long Island
p.s. - the other place you might want to check out is BEHR's - I got my second daughter's wood bed there and again - got the drawer underneath (great use of space) but not the mattress.

Costco - yes, really! My daughter has a beautiful set (looks just like PBK and is solid wood). She has a trundle. Best part is the cost - super reasonable. The pieces are delived put together and they put the trundle together upon shippping. The brand is called Cafekid and you can check out the website and order at Costco. Go to http://www.cafekid.com/ They sometimes have samples in the store (call first). But I would not steer you wrong - the quality is top notch - so good you could tell people it's PBK and no one would ever know. A great place for sheets is the Company Store Kids. Really sweet bedding sets. Good luck!

I'm not sure if this helps, but I hve not had good luck with Pottery Barn furniture. The quality is poor and the returns are difficult and expensive. Keep looking!

Crib City/Teen City on Rt. 22 in Union sells a wide variety of manufacturers. We've had good luck with furniture there. My one daughter has an Ethan Allen trundle that has lasted well also, although it was more expensive than the set we bought at Teen City.

Great place to look is Crib & Teen City in Hartsdale --(I think it's Hartsdale) on Central Avenue --we got our daughter, who just turned four, a beautiful set of furniture --it's Lea Furniture --Spring Garden Collection -we love it -white, wood, trundle bed --the salespeople -DJ (woman) and Phil are really nice and helpful. I also love PB Kids stuff and this set is the first thing I've loved other than PB Kids.
Good luck!

ps -you can look up Lea Spring Garden Furniture on line to take a look -they have other sets as well but this was my favorite

Another option to getting a trundle bed would be to use a good quality air mattress for sleepovers. We've been using one for many years for our oldest daughter, now 16, and has always worked out well. You can get a standard type mattress, or a "raised" mattress. This way you can just inflate when needed, & deflate for storage. This allows you to get a more solid regular bed for your child to sleep in. Most trundle or daybed types loosen up after years of use & can become shakey.

I had the same problem when we bought a twin bed for my son a year ago. All the furniture stores only show a very limited selection (3 or 5 models) in their showrooms. Then I googled all stores that specialize on kids furniture in our area and there you usually find ALL the models that you saw online at great prices. We went to Kiddie World on Rt. 17 in Hasbrouck Heights, NJ but that might be too far for you. They have two big halls full of only kids furniture and I am sure they would have at least 5 to 10 variations of the bed you want.

We also moved our son into a trundle from a crib. It is all wood, made in USA, www.vermont precisionwoodworks.com. We have added pieces throughout the years.

Not sure if they are still in business, but my son has a trundle bed from This Ends Up. It is all wood and very sturdy. Actually the bed was my husband's growning up and now my 3 3/4 yo son has been using it for a year or so. The bed is probably about 15-20 years old and it does not look it at all.

Hi C.,

My daughter has a beautiful white trundle sleigh bed made by Kidcraft. You can view the beds online, just google kidcraft. We bought our bed at Costco.

Good Luck
