We were thinking of purchasing a new bed for our daughters bday but I'm not sure which one to get. I wanted to get something that had an extra bed for sleepovers. Out of the hideway, daybed w/trundle or bunk bed what do you think is best? Thank you!!
I'd go with a trundle bed. It won't be used super often, so it'd be nice to have out of the way completely. Plus, it'll be harder to stash junk under the bed :P
I vote for a nice regular bed for your daughter and a lovely self inflating mattress for sleepover kiddos. We have had several inflating mattresses over the years, and by far they have turned out to be the best thing for sleepovers. Since they are portable the kids can have sleepovers anywhere in the house. Since they deflate and store away in their own little carry case - they take up no space.
Barring that - the trundle bed is cool.
I would also go with the trundle since it would be for sleepovers. Another option though is a loft bed. There are different beds out there, some not as high for younger kids. You could place a twin size futon under the loft and your daughter would have her own little sitting area. A friend's inlaw did this, along with curtains that could be untied. Their daughter was 4 and loved having her own little space. I believe I was told she liked to pretend it was her house when she played.
My older daughter has a trundle and it works great. it's out of the way and rolls out easily.
Bunk bed, because you still have storage under the lower bunk.
My daughter has a trundle day-bed and we love it BUT the problems we run into: the room has to be relatively clutter-free when wanting to pull it out - it usually never is and when she has a friend over we are scrambling to put the "junk" somewhere!!! And then you can't store anything under the bed because there's always a bed there - can't ever count on that space to hide anything!
But it is fun to have the extra bed!!! Plus, sometimes my daughter has it pulled out (and up) just to make a gigantic bed - that's fun!! Then when it's just the day-bed, she fixes it up real pretty with all her fancy pillows and stuffed animals. Looks cute!!

I won't ever do bunk beds, my friend's son fell off the top bunk and died. He was in elementary school. He was just on top and went to move over and missed and fell to his death. Just a few feet. A freak accident of course but still. They are too risky for my home.
A friend of mine got her daughter a day bed with gorgeous dark wood sides that were shaped like a sleigh bed. The bed frame/sides? was actually very attractive.
Since it was a day bed they sit higher off the ground, no box springs, they put a trundle bed under it and any time someone comes to visit they pull it out and put a full or queen sheet set on it to make a bed that size. It is so convenient and even now that the girl is 17 she is still using the frame, they've bought a new mattress or two but she is still using the day bed frame.
I think that is the most convenient way to go.
This bed is very similar to hers except her wood was dark brown. The trundle actually wheeled out and lifted up even with the mattress on the daybed. It felt like an actual solid mattress once a mattress pad was on under the sheets. It was very very comfortable.

We have full size beds with a trundle for each of our kids. They are great even when Auntie comes for a sleepover. Also, they won't ever outgrow their furniture .Goodluck=0)
If it's for sleepovers, I would vote a trundle bed. That way it won't take up any extra space in her room, and you don't risk being held liable if someone else's child falls from the top bunk.
I'd avoid bunk bed. Heat rises and can get warn up there, a bother to make bed easily everyday, etc.
Daughter has a twin trundle (great buys at costco, and they'll get them in again in July) my son has a full size bed and we also have an air mattress. My son really wanted a bunk bed but I had to convince him the full was a better option plus it'll grow with him and is great as a guest room. When we do have guests he goes to sleep in his sisters room on the trundle.
We have a 5 year old and we got a bunk bed because my almost 3 year old (going on 13) likes to sleep in the same room sometimes. Having said that, my preference would be for a trundle bed. Separately, I'd highly recommend putting a cover on the mattresses because it can get gross if not.
