Seeking Advice on Merina

I'm considering having Merina inserted this week (they tell me inserting during your period is more comfortable). I know in theory this seems like the choice for my husband and I. I've been reading reviews that scare me because they list weight gain, heavy bleeding, mood swings severe cramping, etc. I've been on the pill for years (Trivora) and have never had any side affects. I research Trivora and there are also many many negatives listed by reviewers. So, I'm curious to know if there's anyone out there that has been on the pill and switched to Mirena and if it was a positive or negative experience. Thank you!

So What Happened?

I went through with it yesterday and the process went just as most everyone described - not too bad. A bit of a pinch and some cramping (like mild back labor for me) The cramping seems to be lessening which is a good sign. Thank you everyone for input!

I've had my Mirena for over a year and have had no issues with it. My periods are super light, no cramping and very little PMS. Like with anything, there are always people who will love & hate it. Personally, I think its great! No complaints here!!

Hi T.,

I was on the pill for many years until I started having my children. Now that I'm pretty sure I'm done with kids but don't want to make it permanent, I opted for the Mirena. I have had the Mirena since July last year and absolutely LOVE it. It is hassle-free and very effective. The first three months my menstrual cycle was adjusting so I did 'spot' a lot. My husband at first was always like, "You're on your period AGAIN????". Hee, hee. But once those first few months passed it has been very nice. My menstrual cycle is back to it's normal monthly period and sometimes I even skip a month! :) I never had cramping that didn't get better with a mild Mydol pill, and weight gain was NEVER a problem. Remember, if you don't like the Mirena, you can always remove it whenever you want. It's very easy. I had it inserted at around the last days of my period, it didn't hurt one bit. Ectopic pregnancy is a risk factor but the advantages outweigh the disadvantages in my opinion. Hope this helped! :)

I just got it on the 7th and so far I love it! There was a pinch and a little cramping at insertion but that wasn't too bad and didn't last long. However an hour after the procedure I had the worst back cramps ever. I felt like I was in the begginning stages of back labor again. However 8 hrs later (I dulled it with meds but it didn't cease) it was gone and I've had no pain since.

Hi T., I don't know if my case will help but I had it done about 4 months ago. So far my results have been 10 day periods. I know it sounds horrible. However, I have a friend that also had it done and has not had a period in 5 years and swears by it. I must tell you that I am one of those people that tends to have extreme reactions to medications, so I almost always get the worse case scenario effect. My doctor told me that out of the thousands that she has placed mine may be the first she may have to remove if the bleeding persists next month.

Hi T.,

Have you considered getting the copper IUD; there are no hormones therefore you would eliminate those side effects you are worried about. I have had my copper IUD in now for about 6 months and have had no problems:)

Good Luck,

Hi, T.. I have had the Mirena for 7 years now. I got it at my 6-week check after my last son. A little "pinch" at first. I used to pms really bad and had irregular periods and side-effects from the pill. With this, I have no cramps, no mood swings, very light periods (maybe a liner for a day or two, but that's it. I love it. Best thing we did. My friend at work got it almost a year ago, when her daughter was about a year. She had a little pinching with it, a little cramping at first, now all the same great results that I've had and no complications for her either. Good luck!

Hi T.,
I was also advised to have the Mirena inserted by my doctor. She told me there were no side effects such as weight gain or any of the other things the pill can cause. Being a doula and always telling my clients to get all the info before making a decision, I researched it myself. Not only did I find all those forums talking about the side effects, but I found the informational page the manufacturer gives the doctor. There were all the side effects listed, that my doctor said didn't happen. We need to remember that the pharmaceutical companies give kick-backs to the dr's for using their product. In the end I did not see it as a good fit for me, and after reading so many stories about the Mirena puncturing through the uterus, I am glad I chose that route. Whatever you choose, please make sure you have all the inoformation, so you will know what you can expect. Do all the side effects happen to everyone? No, but the more info you have, the better you can be prepared to deal with what you may get.

Dear T.,

I'm a 37 yr old stay at home mother of two beautiful girls, 8 and 4 yrs old. I too was on the pill for many many years. I switched to Mirena about 1 1/2 yr ago. I don't think I had any side affects that I can remember that were of major impact. The only thing that I did go through was that when I wanted to get pregnant again, it took awhile to get pregnant. With both of my daughters, I got pregnant within a month of stopping taking the pill. But with Mirena it took 3 mos. to get pregnant. Which scared me at the time. By the end of the year I ended up having a miscarriage in my second month. I don't know if Mirena had anything to do with it or not. Dr said it didn't and I haven't seen any research to tell me that other women have had the same experience. I think that with any contraceptive, besides a condom a women may go through some side affects, it's just being careful that one doesn't go through MAJOR side affects.

Good luck

Hi T.,

I had Mirena inserted July of last year. The only side affect I have had was some irregular bleeding in between periods that have now stopped. And as far as the heavy bleeding it is suppose to stop that, my periods were extremely heavy, sometimes lasting 7 or more days. Now, they are lighter and back to normal. It is great, I don't have to worry about anything. There has been no abnormal weight gain either. Definitly a positive experience for me.

Hi there,
I had the Merina IUD for about 1 year and it was the worst year of my life!!! Seriously!!! I had the worst migraine headaches and during that year I had 3 episodes of vertigo. The doctors couldn't give me an explanation as to why I was getting vertigo, which by the way is the worst condition-you can't even stand up! And it lasts for at least a week...they told me it couldn't have anything to do with the IUD. But once I got it removed I have not had mograines or vertigo...it has been almost a year. So, I definately would not recommend any type of IUD...

I made the switch & loved it! The only side effect I experienced was having funky cramping (not bad, just funky) on & off for the 1st 6 months. It wasn't unbearable at all. It just freaked me out until I knew what it was from. Definately have it inserted on your period. It is alot easier for the Dr. to do & less cramping on your part. I had severe cramping at insertion. They told me to take a Motrin & it did NOTHING!! My girlfreind didn't even feel it. Good luck!

Hi!
I had the Mirena inserted just over a year ago. I had a lot of cramping that day (!), but it was relieved with ibuprofen. I had light cramps and slight bleeding randomly (3-4 times a week) for more than 6 months, slowly occurring less and less over time. Now I barely have a period and I really love not having to remember to take a pill. As others said, some people do better than others. You can always take it out, but I would definitely give it a chance.

I've had the Mirena IUD for 2 years now and love it. Like the others have said, no cramping, super light flow (if any), no mood swings or weight gain.

Like any BC, there are some it doesn't work for, but the majority of Mirena users love it. You will probably have some spotting for a few weeks (up to 12 weeks) after insertion. It gets old, but does go away. Mine lasted about 6 weeks but it was just minor spotting, more annoying than anything and then I didn't have another period for 3 months! So don't get another peroid at all. Mine's just really light which I love!

Good luck!

I had been on ortho-cyclin (bc pills) for like 10 yrs, and have had my Mirena for about 3 months now. I never had any side effects with the pill. When I first got the mirena put in, I cramped for about 3-4 days, hard. I lightly spoted for about 3 weeks straight. But after that, piece of cake. I barely spot for my periods, like don't even fill a panty liner. I have some cramping, but nothing too bad. I know my girlfriend says her husband can feel it during intercourse, but I do not have that problem. I guess it will be a little different for everyone. If you have any questions, feel free to ask.
