Hi Moms,

My poor 9-month-old son has a cold and a sore throat but not strep (confirmed by doc appt.) and is miserable. He's especially uncomfortable at night for which I plan to give Motrin but any drug-free suggestions for easing his pain during the day? Much appreciated :-)

What can I do next?

Do you have a baby swing? When my babies were sick I always had them sleep in the swing for naps and at bedtime if I felt like they were congested. It helps with drainage (both of mine were prone to ear infections) and lets them breathe a little easier since they're upright. If you don't have a swing prop some pillows under one side of the crib so the crib mattress is slightly tilted. Whatever you can do to keep them propped up and not lying flat will help. I've had some friends who let their babies sleep in the carseat too to keep them propped up. Hope this helps!

Hi,
I have bought what we call "medicine suckers". Since you can't give them a throat lozenge, these work great. I believe I found them at Walmart, and that is the only place I have seen them. They are with the other cough drops and throat lozenges. They don't really have any medicine, just vitamin C and Zinc I think. Sorry I don't have more info. I don't have the bag and it has been a while since I bought any. When my daughter was smaller these worked great, it soothes their little throats and they seem to really like them. My one yr old has used them too. Hope this helps. Oh, I think the bag has a picture of a rhino on it.
Good luck,
J.

Besides pain relievers (Tylenol and/or Motrin), my ped once recommended getting a can of peaches in heavy syrup and giving my daughter the syrup to drink. The thickness of it helps soothe the throat and the sweetness will help motivate them to drink it. My ped also said, no honey until age 2 (although I hear some say age 1). Pedialyte also makes popsicles that you might let him suck on (although watch him carefully that a piece doesn't break off while he sucks on it).

Good luck.

This always works for us:

-humidifier in bedroom ( start it a little bit before bedtime so his room is soothing from the start)
-pedia vapor rub (it's all herbal....and made for babies)
-the vapor Johnson bath soap
-if he has a stuffy nose that Little Kids saline nose spray seems to work

How sad when our little ones get sick. Lots of fluids; water, juice, frozen fruit pops. The cold will numb his throat. YOU SHOULD NEVER GIVE HONEY TO A CHILD LESS THAN 2 YEARS OLD.

You might want to give him a baby size spoon of honey. That will sooth the pain of the sore throat.

Honey should be restricted to kids over ONE YEAR (not 2 years).. due to botulism. Popsicles were always welcome at our house when the little ones had a sore throat. Warm baths also help open up and clogged nasal/sinus passages. The stuff just seems to run out when they take a warm bath.. and you can wipe it away with a damp washcloth rather than dealing with the nose sucker things or trying to get them to blow (which most kids haven't mastered yet at that age).

J.,

I pray that your son will feel better soon. I would try some room temp juicy juice or water.

ask your pediatrician what he can have. A cold popsicle made with vitamin C?...I used to make fruit smoothies in the blender and pour them into popsicle molds.
9 months is pretty young; but something cold, even a clean wash cloth placed damp in the freezer will alleviate the discomfort of a sore throat and especially teething.
I know it's tough to battle out the baby years; but hang in there, mom

I personally drink hot tea with lemon and honey, ad it works. But I don't remember the age you should allow your child to have honey and why an older age. But it does help. I am sure the internet would have info on this.

Cloraseptic spray for kids.......not sure if there is an age restriction on the label or not - wouldn't hurt to look at it at the store and ask the pharmacist and/or the Dr.
Poor baby! Good luck.

Hello J.,

My son had same problem also had a high fever. Emergency doctor told me that he should use first 4 hours use Motrin then 2 hours later tynol then 2 hours give Mortin etc... you should ask your baby doctor first before you give him Mortin and Tynol. there is baby chest rub cream at Walgreen. also use a humidifier. I suggest use a baby chest rub is very good and help for his cold and congestions.

good luck
D.
