Seeking Action Oriented Marriage Counselor/Relationship Coach in Richardson Area

My husband and I have been together for 13 years (dating+married). Over the last 5 years we've been apart for large chunks of time due to his work, and I think our communication skills have suffered because of it. Add to that, the normal baggage you bring to a relationship from your upbringing/family relationships. Then throw a new baby and a recent relocation (which we are happy with, but is still a big change), and there we are.

I've had very successful counseling in the past due to a "minor" molestation incident, but I also had a stupid therapist who wanted me to "explore my sexuality" in a lesbian support group - ??? - because I was strongly drawn to powerful women on TV (Xena, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Wonder Woman, etc - gee, I wonder why??). So my husband's a little gun shy about finding a "bad" therapist.

Can anyone help with a referral? We're spiritual, but not religious, so a secular therapist would be better.

Thanks

I think you would be happy with Dr. Paul Bowles; his office is at Hillcrest & 635. He used to be a minister and his counseling is "pro-family," but not religious in nature. His counseling focuses mainly on communications. My husband and I used him for premarital counseling. He was especially good at making my husband feel comfortable with the counseling - he even explained that he worked with many high level executives with the same counseling to help them in their careers by improving their communication skills with employees/peers/ etc. good luck.

I am a social worker and make referrals all the time. Galaxy Counseling Center...takes insurance. Also the crisis centers for women if you want to do the counseling yourself. They might work out something with a couple. They are usually free. The Family Place -###-###-#### is a possibility. you need to inquire about if your husband can attend for individual counseling. Counseling Institute of Texas (garland) ###-###-####. Child and Family Guidance Centers ###-###-####. Christian works for Children ###-###-#### ( they are very objective and don't push anything down you that you don't want or need. website is www.christianworks.org i have sent parents over there for a multitude of concerns. sliding scale. Neighborhood Youth and Family Co. of Richardson. ###-###-####. Very good but strict about missing appts or being on time. sliding scale. Then you can check out phone book for private counselors. Their rates are anywhere from $100.00 up. close to it. Good luck.

Hi P.,
I recommend you call Roxie Banker. Our counselor recommended her after we finished our individual work with him. She is pretty phenomenal as a relationship/communication coach. She is fluent in "male" and "female" language, therefore can understand both parties and help them understand each others needs, desires, and find ways they can accomplish the fulfillment of both. She's a real treasure. Her number is ###-###-####.
Good luck!

I am a retired marriage and family counselor trained in Imago Relationship Therapy, an action-oriented relationship therapy, which was developed by Dr. Harville Hendrix and Dr. Helen LaKelly Hunt. I wholeheartedly recommend Dr. David McKeon and/or Dr. Margie McKeon. They can be accessed through the website of Imago Relationship Therapy: www.gettingtheloveyouwant.com or directly through their own website: www.daveandmargie.com David McKeon was one of my professors at Texas A&M Commerce as I worked toward a doctorate. Both he and his wife, Margie, are excellent therapists and just all-around good human beings. I invite you to explore the Imago website, maybe sign up for their free relationship newsletter. Also, I urge you to read about and consider attending Dave's and Margie's Imago Workshop, the next one being held in Richardson in April. In the workshop you can be as private or as open as you want to be in the group. Your emotional safety is given top priority. Attending the week end workshop will almost certainly put you months ahead on any counseling you may want to engage in afterwards. In any event, you will have the opportunity to develop communication/dialogue skills that, done appropriately, will get you to resolution of any marital issues. Email or call them with any questions you may have. Good luck to you both and I wish for you deep love and connection for the rest of your lives. R. B. P.S. Welcome to Texas!

We have been married 17 years. Earlier in marriage, we were struggling with communication big time. We had some changes in our lives and we weren't getting along well. Therapist Number 1 said he gave our marriage a 10% chance of working. We left feeling mad and defeated but I wasn't going to take that jerk's advice. We were referred to Jean by a good friend. Jean immediately gave us each some personality tests that showed how our brains worked and how we communicated. We went in depth understanding our styles and our languages. We tested polar opposites and with that information, she showed us how to communicate. Later, we got off track when we started working his company together (I was trying to give suggestions on how to improve his bookkeeping business....he is accountant and I am sales and marketing..another big clash). We actually went through some exercises together that helped us communicate clearly and understand each other better with the help of Jean in a safe envirnoment. When I lost my baby, she also helped me work through some of the pain with some mild hypnosis (nothing freaky). She is liscensed in marriage, family, addiction, you name it. She is very versed on nutrition and supplements as well. She works out of her home near Park and Preston. I have sent alot of folks to her. She gets down to business. She has a very strong and healthy marriage and she is wonderfully unconventional. Please tell her J. Forrer sent you if you go (I don't get anything for that by the way, she just likes to know who referrals come from). She takes insurance as well. I can't say enough good things about her. She is open and a bit unconventional but certainly won't have you explore your sexuality if that is not the issue. Good luck, I have been there with the communication thing and we now have 3 kids, work together and communicate just fine. We are a great team and Jean literally saved us (it helped having an open partner willing to work on it too). Our kids are happy too.

This is a very interesting situation. I think you understand the issue, communication, as you know, is so important and can be so difficult with time and change in between you both. Welcome to Dallas, by the way! My husband and I go to a church in Plano that is very big on community, we believe in working together with your "family" through the type of issues you have mentioned. I don't know any counselors, but I do not a lot of other married couples that might be able to help. I hope you find what you and your husband need.

He is a marriage counselor and also teaches the Kids Sake Class for Practical Parent Education. I'm unfortunately in the middle of a divorce and he was one of the instructors in the Kids Sake Class Collin County requires you to take when there are children involved in a separation. He does spiritual or not (your preference). I was very impressed.

I have been there! Try Gearing Up in Plano. They are a husband/wife team (Sylvia and Milt Gearing) with a lot of knowledge and well researched tools to help with communication and other issues. They are also very down to earth. Another really good counselor is Daniel Corley in McKinney. Good luck.

I highly recommend Dr. Roy Austin. I have not been to him but my daughter has and she really likes him. He has also been a speaker at a workshop that I attended. I can get some good recommendations from my former employer if you need them regarding Dr. Austin's reputation.

I looked up his address and it has changed since my daughter went to him about 12 years ago.
