We just got a dog from a shelter. But unfortunatly she has to much energy for our 2.5 year old.
She is a beautiful golden retriever lab mix, red hair.
She is 1 years old, very sweet. She had all her shots,is spayed .
She is good with cats, loves children but maybe older than 5.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

hi everybody,
I wanted to thank everybody for your advice. I just feel so bad to bring her back to that place and make her feel sad.
But I also believe she needs somebody who really can work with her, and play alot.
Thank's so much. M.

Marion,
Where did you get the dog and how long have you had her? We recently adopted a 1yr old terrier mix from a shelter whom they said was good with kids, dogs etc.. After 2 wks. the dog began snapping at our kids, me, our trainer and the vet. We had no option but to take the dog back to the shelter. They were very helpful with the return of our dog and appreciated the information. If your dog is sweet and really good with kids one idea would be to work with qualified dog trainers. A Closer Bond in Palatine has all different options and maybe they can help. Just a thought.

Definitely call the shelter you got him from. Most shelters put in their contract a statement that you agree to return the dog to them if you decide you can no longer take care of it. They want to be sure that the dog ultimately ends up in a good home too, so please make sure you work with them.

Call the Shelter and let them know that you can no longer keep the dog. This way both you and the shelter can work together in finding a new home for the pup. They can locate a new home for you faster than posting it here or on any other forum. Open communication is best. Please don't think the shelter will look at you as a failure, but on the contrary, they will appreciate it that you were honest with them. This way when a couple of years down the road when you're ready for a new friend, the shelter will work with you in finding the perfect family pet.

Good luck

Hi there!

If your shelter won't take it back, I would also recommend Hinsdale Humane Society.

Good luck.

Hi Marion,

When I read your request I thought I was reading my own. I too was in this situation in January. I wanted to pass on that Naperville Humane Society is amazing and not as expensive as others to give pets up for adoption. They also post their pets online so we were able to watch our former dogs progress. I think it took a week and a half before he was adopted. Just an option because for us it was taking quite some time to find him a home on our own. K.

Marion,

I know what you mean about the energy. We have a 7month old black lab, and she is very active and jumps on the kids when she gets excited. Our kids are 9, 5 and 5, and even my 5 yr olds get knocked over sometimes. The girls are fine with it now, and I know that she will eventually calm down as she grows.

I can see how the 2.5 yr old would be a little young for a high energy dog.

I agree with some of the other posters, call the shelter back and I am sure they will take the dog back.

L.
