Seattle Dog Moms, Where to Get a Puppy?

Sooo, we have looked at the shelters and they don't adopt puppies to families with young kids, and we have a 4.5 year old.
We will however not settle for an older dog, we have both made bad experiences with adopting older dogs with bad habits that needed to be returned - we are looking for a puppy under 6 months old so we can be sure the dog receives proper training from early on.
The rescues on petfinder are ridiculous, I mean home visit... really? I am getting a dog not adopting a child. I will not tolerate any intrusive BS in order to get a dog... I don't mind proving paperwork that we own our home or provide pictures of the fenced backyard, but that's it...
Craigslist is full of scammers and dog flippers, so not a good place to look as well.
Newspaper: all the ads are from show breeders asking upwards of $500 for their dogs (most are in the $800+ range) and that is clearly too high of a price tag for a simple family dog.
We don't mind paying a reasonable price/adoption fee and we of course will agree to a neuter contract (that's the plan anyways)...
So where do you look? Where did you find your dog? Do you have a favorite rescue or shelter that you have made great experiences with or do you know a breeder(any medium size breed, no bullies) that breeds family pets (rather than show dogs) in a humane way and for a reasonable price?
Thanks for pointing me in the right direction.

What can I do next?

We got ours from a breeder (sticker shock!)... So I can't help you there... But the off leash parks (Magnusson... Don't follow the signs -typical Seattle signs don't send you the right way, we had our dog off leash in the wrong part of Magnusson for months, blithely unaware along with a dozen others-, Go through the main enterance on Sand Point Way, go straight until it deadends at the dog park just past the playground. Actually, we do both. Dog park then people park!) Or.. Edmonds & Marymoore also have OLDPs.

Magnusson & Marymoore both have message boards, all have LOTS of dogs and people out and about. Rare for Seattle, dog people all talk to each other / strangers.

You won't see a lot of puppies ever, most vets rec no parks until 6mo old, and it MAY be a park rule... But lots of dog people!

I have adopted from a rescue organization and the home visit was not intrusive at all....nothing even remotely close to adopting my daughter. They just want to make sure the pets are likely going to a "forever" home.

My latest addition last month was a dog I never would have chosen but he was meant to be! My daughter stopped a large dog from attacking a small dog and could not let the little guy just run the streets. He wasn't microchipped, not listed at any of the shelters as missing and was in horrible condition at approximately three years old. $1,400 later in vet bills to remove an eye, neuter him, blood tests, vaccines, foxtail removal from the ear and complete body shave he came home. He is an awesome fit and sitting on my lap right now...I never wanted a ten pound dog, my cats are 16 and 17 pounds.

You never know who might be a great fit, I hope it works out for you and your family. Pets are great!

We got our perfect dog on craigslist! There are a few purebred rescue places that are supposed to be good too. We may have gotten lucky on cl, but I think it helps to go meet the people and see how the dogs have been living. That's where I would sell puppies if I had them, so not all rehomers on cl are bad!
