Screaming in the Car

My son is 2 and every day when I pick him up to go home he cries and fights me. It never fails, he is a perfectly happy child when I get there to pick him up and once we get home, but on the ride there (only about 7 minutes) he is screaming. Any thoughts on why or what I can do to make him stop would be appreciated.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Much better now. He still wants to stay at daycare, he has so much fun there. When I go to pick him up I put on his jacket and when he starts to whine about leaving I ask him if he wants a snack. When he tells me please I give him a closed bag of Gerber Puffs and tell him that I will open it when we get in the car. He says "ok" and tells everyone Bye and happily gets in the car. It is enough to get us home but not too much to spoil his appetite for dinner.
Thanks to all.

My daughter cries in the car sometimes but use to scream when we went anywhere. I didn't take her anywhere hardly for nine months. Have you tried a portable dvd player in the car. My daughter use to make herself throw up but I think it was b/c she got car sick. we have a truck now and she does tons better.

HELLO, MY SON WHO JUST TURNED TWO DOES THE SAME THING. I HAVE FOUND THAT IF I TAKE CRACKERS OR SOMETHING(THAT DOES NOT RUIN DINNER ) FOR HIM TO SNACK ON HE WILL BE CALM ON THE RIDE HOME.

My son is 15 months old and he did the same thing to me everyday. I started giving him a cup with juice in it or a few crackers.

Just thought I would let you know that my 2 year old son done the same thing, but only when it was sunny out. The sun bothered him. When it was in his eyes he would scream.

Try bringing something with you when you go to pick him up for him to occupy his mind with..no matter if it is one of his fav. toys or something like that just try

Hi Jamie,

Bless your heart. I know that screaming can be annoying especially while trying to be attentive to your driving. My two year old is very attached and wants to sit in my lap sometimes while I'm driving :( (a big NO NO) My husband got us a TV that straps on to the back of the head rest. It plays DVDS. This helped me out. Also we stop by McDonalds or Wendys on some evening. So like everyone else the snack thing may work for you as well.

Be Blessed

My son would do that as well...he is 2 1/2 now...I used the juice cup and snack as well. That stopped it.

My 2 year old daughter does the same thing from time to time and I'll distract her by asking her what she wants for dinner or what she wants to play with in the bathtub that night. Maybe if you can get him talking it will make the ride home easier. Hope this helps!

one thing I do for my daughter is have a snack prepared for her to eat in the car on the way home. It keeps her busy and helps give her a boost of energy. Some days I even have a small treat for her in the car, like a small toy that came from my happy meal that I got for my lunch, haha. Or sometimes I just bring a favorite toy from home and she plays with that on the ride home. Just try to stay calm though when he cries. I know it's hard.

He might get carsick. My friend's neice had that problem and they got her these bracelets that she wears in the car. I think they do something with pressure points in her wrists or magnets or something I'm not really sure on the details. I think though that you can get them in most drugstores. Otherwise, I also agree with the other moms about the snack. Sometimes a juice cup or some crackers help my kiddo when he gets cranky in the car.

It sounds to me like he suffers from "I don't wanna stop playing" syndrome. Many children experience and many parents suffer from it. You might try going to his class and playing with him a few minutes before leaving. Get him to show you where he played today. Then you can keep some "special" animal crackers and juice box for in the car if he doesn't scream. If he screams, tell him you will pull over and wait until he is done to continue your trip then pull over. He is two and is starting to develop a sense of who he is and his power over the adults in his life. The time to get control is now. Make your transition times less abrupt and ease your way to the car by saying good bye to the toys, to the teacher, to the water fountain always getting closer and closer to the car. Then if he willingly gets in the seat and doesn't scream offer him a treat. Maybe if he screams let him see you eat one and if he wants one say "I'm sorry, these are for people that are not screaming and crying". Believe me he will understand, parents don't give them enough credit.
Good luck,
C.

Several things could be going on, but my guess is that it is a combination of things:

*some kids don't transition well from one activity to another, and you may need more help from the caregiver in getting him ready for the ride home
*some hate the carseat/get carsick
*some have low blood sugar at this time of day and a snack will do the trick
*some are tired, and the ride home "almost" puts them to sleep, but they are fighting it

I would try a snack/drink, kid music, check out the daycare to be sure there isn't an issue there, and when all else fails just tell him, "Ouch, you're hurting mommy's ears!"

My daughter does the same thing. I'd be willing to bet a lot of mothers' kids do. If I were 2 and running around all day and I saw mom at the end of the day, oh I'd be so happy, and oh no! not the car seat! What? Sit still? No way! Just a thought....

VERY STRANGE HE WOULD BE ACTING LIKE THAT,YOU MIGHT WANT TO MAKE SOME UN-ANNOUNCED VISITS TO THE DAYCARE, MAKE SURE NOTHING BAD IS GOING ON THERE! SOMETIMES ACTIONS SPEAK LOUDER THEN WORDS, I HAVE 2 CHILDREN MYSELF, AND IF THIS IS HAPPENING EVERYDAY,POSSIBLY SOMETHING COULD BE GOING ON, MAYBE HE DOES NOT LIKE IT THERE AND TRYING TO TELL YOU!
GOOD LUCK~
