I did it for a family reunion project and some of the photographs were over 50 years old. I made it a point to scan them on a high resolution so that I could go back in with photoshop and fix them. It was the restoration that took forever.
My photo collection is a mess! I have hundreds of pictures from my wedding 12 years ago and pictures of my children in boxes under the stairway. Has anyone tried to convert regular pictures to digital format?

YES! I have done it and it's WONDERFUL! I know now my pictures are safe b/c not only did I scan them in myself, but I burned them to disks and gave a set to a relative. (In case of fire)
That is part of what I do with my work from home business - Heritage Makers - feel free to contact me for more information. ____@____.com
I would recommend checking into http://www.scancafe.com/
I plan on sending my wedding negatives to them. I am a wedding photographer and plan to edit and design a wedding album from my own wedding photos since I didn't have this valuable service available to me at the time of my wedding.
I have small inhome business, JT Digital Conversions, I can convert from snapshots, slides, or 35mm negatives. I charge 55 cents per image for under 1000 images, and 45 cents per image for over 1000 images. They are stored on an archival quality CD and I can also upload to online storage(which I HIGHLY recommend). Get in touch if you are interested, send me a message through mamasource or give me a call!

Hi A.,
I own an assistance company called Errands A.S.A.P. and we do tasks like these...things you don't have time to do, don't want to do or for equipment reasons, cannot do. We will scan, in very high quality, as many photos as you like for $1 per picture. If you’d like annotations added, (for example, if there’s something written on the back of a photo, we could make sure the digital image has that same annotation) for an additional 25 cent charge per photo. Then we'll put them on the medium of your choice, DVD, CD or USB Thumb drive. We would provide the DVDs or CDs but would ask you to provide a USB Thumb drive, if that's your medium of choice. Once your pictures have been scanned, additional copies can be given to your kids and other family members for their memoirs. You may wish to count and sort your pictures first so we can group the digital images appropriately. You can then either bring your boxes of photos to us in Lewisville, or I can pick them up for an additional charge. I hope this is something you'll consider letting us help you accomplish.
Take care,
A. Summars

My brother in law did his the "hard" way. He just sat down with his scanner and scanned them one by one into the computer. The nice thing about this was that as he scanned each one he put it into a shoebox to give to the family member that was featured so when he was done the mess was gone and the pictures were on his computer. I know there are services that will do this for you but I'm sure it is not cheap. If you know a teenager who needs some cash, maybe you can hire them to do the scanning for you.
Yep- just scan them in at high resolution. Note: You can't really get a good print larger than the original you scan. Once I scanned them I burned them to CD's for longevity.
I scanned hundreds of old family photos into photoshop at high resolution. It took a lot of time, but was well worth it. -jm
