Hi Mom's! I'm looking for a safe place to teach my son to drive around the Lucas/Allen area. A quite low traffic wide street or a big open field or parking lot, where I don't have to worry about him hitting anything would be great. He just got his driving permit. Thanks for your sugestions! :-)

What can I do next?

Hi V.-
When my daughter was learning to drive last year we took her to Craig Ranch...no one lives there yet and all the streets have been completed. There are lots of great stop sign intersections for practice. She felt comfortable driving there because there is no one around. Good luck,

Hi Val - you might want to think about rural Collin County, south of Princeton in the peninsula around Lake Lavon. From Allen, you would take Bethany Road east and take the left turn on FM-3286, at that little convenience store where there sign says Live Bait Sandwiches. Then contunie east until you're across the 1-mile bridge. That part of Collin County has paved FM roads and gravel county roads; it's out of city limits and I won't say it's sparsely populated, but it's definitely slow-paced.

Any high school or college campus would be great. My mom took me to a new neighborhood when I was learning to drive and we went in the evening. Hardly any traffic.

Although I can't name a specific location, I can recommend a place that's great for learning to drive. When I was learning to drive, my dad would take me to a business park parking lot on a weekend. These are usually clusters of corportate type offices with huge parking lots. I've seen some around Allen that have been built recently, but I'm still pretty new to the area, so I don't remember streets.

These lots are contained and you can have him treat the intersections of the lot like stop signs. Good luck!

I have a 14 yr old daughter. Some of her friends are newly 15 and learning to drive. Here are some places parents I know take their teens.

Clark High School Stadium. HUGE parking lot. A lot of people use this area.

Businesses with large parking lots...

Malls before or after opening/closing so very little cars are there.

Good luck...I dread going through this process....
