Safe Deodorant for Kids

My 10 year old daughter needs deodorant - she really stinks when she's active and she's often active! I would like to get her something without antiperspirant or bad chemicals. But for myself, I find the "natural" deodorants don't work at all. And are expensive! Any suggestions for a deodorant I can feel good about giving to a child that isn't just a waste of money? Thanks!

What can I do next?

Since aluminum is clearly linked to Alzheimer's, 60 years is a long time for daily skin absorption. My daughter used toms of Maine, I use a crystal and hibaclense (on the recommendation of my doctor). Works great, and no aluminum.

I like deodorant crystals. There are many different brands and some you can find in the super market. They work well with no chemicals. She will still sweat but not have the odor.

I guess my question is, if you wear it yourself, why do you feel like it's unsafe for your daughter? The vast majority of humanity uses deodorant for 60+ years in a lifetime, and it has presented no problems for anyone that I'm aware of. Just buy her whatever deodorant she wants. (My daughter likes to stand there smelling all of them, LOL).

at Wholefoods they sell those crystals.. My friend used them for years because she didn't like the fact that they add aluminum to deodorants.. at our house we use the brand Jason's.. it's natural and aluminum free.. we also use powder without talcum in it.. combined, the two work pretty well.. Oh and we are big water drinkers so that helps in terms of the body in that the more we drink, the less smell there is..

Regular deodorants irritate my skin, but Tom's of Maine doesn't, and it really works (trust me, I'm a sweater!)

Why wouldn't any deodorant work? They all have pretty much the same thing in them.

I have a friend who swears by using coconut oil as deodorant. She just uses her fingers I rub some in, and it seems to work pretty well for her. She also happens to be a bigger woman, and was quite a sweater. Maybe that would be worth a shot?

Kudos to you for not wanting to introduce your daughter to the harmful aluminum that's found in almost all antiperspirants! Not only that, but our bodies were made to sweat....why mess with nature?!
If you don't mind paying for a natural deodorant that actually DOES work, Funk Butter is awesome. The other natural deodorants I've found in stores don't work for me without having to reapply several times throughout the day. But Funk Butter does the trick. However, because I have sensitive skin, I am not able to use it every day (the baking soda in it irritates my skin), but I've found I don't even need to. She could use it every other day and still be odor-free (and it helps make the tub last longer, too).
If you don't want to spend the money, it is SO simple to make your own deodorant using 5 T. coconut oil, 1/4 c. baking soda, 1/4 c. arrowroot powder, and about 10 drops of whichever essential oil(s) she likes the smell of.
Another option I recently started trying myself (in case she is also sensitive to the baking soda) is plain old magnesium oil with some essential oils mixed in to make it smell fresh. The first day it worked, but by the end of the day I could smell a little funk. But since that first day, it's worked like a charm (and yesterday was the hottest day of the summer, so I think that's a pretty good test)! And even though it's an "oil" it dries quickly and leaves no marks on clothes.
Good luck! There are lots of options for you/her to try.

Tom's of Maine, Arm & Hammer, or Dove all worked for my daughter without breaking out her skin.

I felt the same way with my daughter and started her with Toms a couple of years ago, only to discover that it really didn't work for her. So she helped herself to a stick of my Degree and has never looked back.

I've also found that using an antibacterial soap (like Dial) just under the armpits helps tremendously!! I just keep a pump of it in the shower for myself and it helps to keep the smell under control too, although I do use regular deodorant as well (Dove).

My 10 yr old and I wear mens deodorant. The Dove for men has no aluminum in it. We tried toms and while it smelled great at first, we were both stinky after a few hours. Mens deodorant works great!

Malin & Goetz's Eucalyptus deodorant works for my husband, but it is also pricey.

i use crystal deodorant whenever i think i can get away with it, but unfortunately i sweat and smell fairly easily, and the crystal stuff just isn't strong enough if i'm going to have an active, busy day.
i've got a friend who has sworn off all the aluminum products (and they really are a worry- they've been linked to several health issues, the most worrisome being an increased risk of alzheimers) who makes a little paste of baking soda and water and applies it with her fingers. she's super-active and i've never smelled BO on her so it does seem to work for some.
i've reluctantly gone back to degree's little black dress formula if i'm going to be working or otherwise out and engaged, and not somewhere i can do a quick swab and respray of the crystal. i'd love to find a really effective natural deodorant. i'm not so worried about wetness, just smelling unpleasant.
