Runny Nose

My 10 month old has had a runny nose for almost a month now. She doesn't seem sick - no fever, coughing, sneezing or anything else. Just a clear runny nose, and it's just in her right nostril. Now she's developed little baby acne under her runny nostril. I've not taken her to the doctor because that's the only symptom, it doesn't seem to run ALOT - just enough to aggravate the skin, and she seems fine. Some people have also told me that kids just have runny noses.
Does this sound like something to be concerned about, or is it pretty normal? Is there anything I can do for the acne?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks for all the advice! I've decided that it's probably due to teething, since those little teeth of hers have been popping out all over the place lately - she now has 6!
I asked her daycare provider about it and she recommended Aquaphor for the irritation under her nose, which is similar to vaseline. So I'm going to try that first along with using her humidifier more and see if it clears up. If not, I'll take her in.
How exciting if it is a molar coming in!

Hi A., yes the same thing happened to my lil girl and it drove me crazy. It has something to due with the fact that shes teething I believe....so besides keeping a ton of tissue on you at all times, put a humidifier in her room, also use the saline drops and the lil plunger thingy haha. Anyways..good luck!

It sounds like she may be getting in molars. Keep an eye on the top right for her one year molar to come through. That has been my experience that if it is clear and runny that it is normally a teething sign for large teeth in the back of the mouth.

Both my girls when they were a baby had runny noses for like it seems forever. Infact my daughter they would always say she had a ear infection even though she never had any other symptoms. I also noticed that while they were teething it happened too. All 3 of my kids have seasonal allergies. When the weather changes they get runny noses. Like right now the weather changing all the time (go figure michigan lol) my little guy has a runny nose plus his throat is a little horse. I give them stuff for allergies. Although my oldest daughter (who is 8)just last year had her tonsils taken out. And let me tell u .... WHAT A DIFFERENCE!!!! This last year was awesome for her. Not one single allergy problem that i can think of. Infact i am thinking about having my other daughters taken out so the school don't have a fit any more with her allergies. One thing u might want to ask the doctor is about seeing a ENT specialist. Big tonsils or anoids can have an affect on runny noses like it did my daughter. Hope this gives u some ideas and good luck !!!
Oh i also suggest vasline on her lip. I used it for both my girls when they were little.

It could be seasonal allergies... I had a similar problem with my oldest when he was just under a year old, and as he got older more symptoms woud arise with each spring and fall. The puffy watery eyes and the headaches didn't start until he was just past 2. You may want to ask your doctor about it and maybe he/ she could tell you for sure.

Maybe put a little vaseline or chapstick on the skin to help protect it a little from the running nose. Mine get little rashes like that from drool when teething.

My boys have runny noses all winter long. I spent hours at the doc's office with my 3 year old, ran him thru all the allergy testing, tried all the Dimetapp's and such...all to no avail. He is still sniffly all winter, and now so is the baby. I'm sure it's an allergy on our end, but it's just an annoyance that we have to live with. I would def. talk to the doc, but there is a good chance you'll have to live with it. Try to treat it naturally first if you can. There are some moms on here who have great knowledge of homeopathic treatments...just ask!

It sounds like teething or an allergy/sinus. You can use vasaline or I beleive it's called baby faces made by gerber for the acne/rash. You can always call the doctor's office and speek to a nurse for another opinion. They usually have some better suggestions, and leave it up to you on wheather you want to come in or not.

My daughter always had a runny nose when she was teething so maybe she is going to have a new tooth soon. The "baby acne" is probably just due to irritation. I know it seems like it will never end but it'll all clear up soon. By the way, my daughter didn't have any typical teething pain when she had the runny nose. The tooth just popped up.

Dear A.,

I am so sorry but I do not know about the runny noses. It is common for children to have runny noses but not to where it concerns you. You may want to consider going to an allergist.

Secondly, I sell a botanical baby creme that would be awesome on the acne under her nose. I am almost 100% certain it would take it away. It clears up ezcema. It sells for $14.00 and would last you quite sometime. I do not want to solicit on the mamasource website.

If you wnat further info. please email me at ____@____.com.

I hope the best for you!

I would take her in because I found out the hard way with my daughter that that is pretty much the only symptom babies have with strep throat. I had strep throat and didn't think my daughter got it because she seemed totally fine, other than a runny nose that would not go away....which I finally took her in for and found out that's the symptom of her having it also. Wierd, but I guess they don't get a sore throat like adults do. I am not sure if that is what is causing your daughter's runny nose, but if it isn't going away I would take her in to be safe. She could even have allergies or a sinus infection....better to know for sure.

I don't know about the acne, but you can probably bet that the cause of her runny nose is allergies.

Hi, my son has the same problem, he is cutting teeth though and I am pretty sure thats why. My daughter had the same problem when she was cutting teeth too. There is nothing you can really do about it except wait it out. Good luck

Hi A.! My daughter did this for awhile, and I thought about taking her in, however, there isn't anything the dr. can do as far as medicine goes. I bought one of those vapor plug ins by PediaCare, I swear by that - it cleared her up in 2 days! Secondly, for the acne, its probably irritated from the constant drip, before bed, put a little vasoline under her nose, and that should go away too. You don't want to give her any meds, as they are not safe and do not work anyway.
I was actually proud of myself for "curing" this on my own, usually I jump and take the kids to the dr. only to find that they can't do anything for the cold! Good luck!
