Riverdale Mom Seeking Play Group or Other Moms

After moving to Riverdale and then having our daughter, I've pretty much been abandoned by all of my friends. I'm a little shell-shocked and worried about getting depressed. How do I go about finding mom's in my area? I try going to the playground, but its tough going up to people and never seems to lead to anything. I feel lame asking them if they want to do a play group.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

I still found Meet-up to be useless, but I found a yahoo group for SAHM in my area that seems to host a bunch of groups. I'm very hopeful!

You may want to look online for some moms groups in your area. I found a moms group through meetup in my neighborhood which has been a lifesaver. Yahoo groups and some other online group tools may also work!

Good luck!

Wow, you sound like me the first year I was home with my son. He is 2.5 now and will have a sibling soon. I was also a social worker before having a family...it feels so isolating to go from a job where you talk to people all day to being home with a baby who can't talk at all!

I have not found the perfect playgroup or playmate for my son but I have found a few things we like. We go to the local library for story hour nearly every week (free and now my son loves books). We go to the same playground several times a week (so we see some of the same kids). I have tried Mommy and Me class and baby swim lessons at the local Y. I also joined a few online groups (meetup.com) and have looked into the local MOMS club (there may be one in your area). It helped me that now a few more of my friends have kids a little younger than my son. Anyway, good luck. Feel free to email me if you want even though I am in NJ.

WHy don't you try a gymboree class? I am going to try a free class, you get the coupon from the web and go. I think it would be a great place to meet other moms and babies.

Hey momma,

So sorry to hear you're having a rough time -- I recently moved back to NYC after being in California for the first 3 1/2 months of my daughter's life, and it was definitely a rough transition...

What have been HUGE helps to me are: La Leche League Meetings, Yahoo Group listserves (there are a couple for Riverdale that I know of - RiverdaleNYfamilies & RiverdaleMoms), and Music Together class (through City Kids Music). The more you can get out and about to events or groups where there will be moms and/or dads with similar aged kids and similar interests, the more your sanity will thank you! :)

Good luck!!

Hi Cleavanessa
I hear you. I just moved from NYC this past wed to New Rochelle and am feeling a little shell shocked myself. I dont know anyone either. I have an almost 3week year old.... I know your child is 6months old.... if you are still interested in meeting up, please let me know... Also I just logged onto meetup.com because of the other replies and it looks like a resourceful website. I too left work to raise baby and am an actress as a hobby. I would like to go back to work sometime....
