Hello all! I currently live in Texas but will be moving back to Ny within the next year. We will most likely live in the Riverdale area of the Bronx. Moving back to NY with little ones is kind of scaring me a little and them going to public school in the Bronx makes me even more scared!! I have contemplated homeschooling for awhile and I think this move will probably push me over the edge and will ensure that I will be homeschooling. I am trying to do my research and find resources now before we move. Are there any homeschooling support groups or coops in the Bronx Manhattan area or even Westchester county (White Plains area) Thanks All!!

Hi M.,

I would continue doing your research - but, I believe the public elementary schools in riverdale are just fine. riverdale is a great area - very different than the rest of the bronx. I was born there and my family lived there for a while before we moved to new jersey. i believe for jr. high and high schools however, that most people who can afford it send their children to private schools (horace mann or riverdale country day school). I believe that the schools in White Plains - if you choose to live there - are diverse, but good schools through high school. My inlaws live in white plains. I don't know anything about home schooling.

Hello M.. I live in the Bronx NY. I know NYC pretty well. Riverdale is part of the Bronx, but mostly upper middle class, professionals live there. The 2 public elementary schools there P.S. 24 and P.S. 81 are very well run and of high caliber. They are the equivalent of a good private school quite honestly. Your children will do very well there should you choose the public school route. My kids are now in High school on their way to college in the fall. I am not knowledgeable about homeschooling because my kids attended public school and did very well.
i made sure I researched the public schools my children went to very well to see what they had to offer. I did not live in Riverdale however so my kids could not go to school there. but I found other schools with specialized programs etc from elementary to high school. Also remember the Bronx now is NOT the Bronx of thr '70s. There is alot more diversity which is good, and alot of improvement. Of course are are the depressed areas which I am sure you also ahve in Texas.
I hope this helps in your decision making.
Welcome back to the Big Apple!

HI M.
Welcome back to NY!
I don't know why you fear the school system. NYC schools are among the best in the country. Both my kids went to them, including college, and one is an attorney and the other has his own computer business. Many of my nieces and nephews are in NYC schools right now and I havent hear any complaints. The facilites are far better( science labs, computer labs, art rooms, libraries and gyms) than any parent could provide.
I think I would find out exactly where you will be living and check out the school in that area. You might be pleasantly surprised.
Good Luck
Hugs, M.

This is a log shot...but what did you end up doing? I'm a mom in Riverdale of 5 yo. I've registered my daughter for PS 81, but with testing/class size and homework expectations, its not our first choice. We have applied to a few progessive schools, but unless we get financial aid, they aren't happening.
Thanks in advance!

Hi M.,

I love the idea of homeschooling, especially on the east coast where there is so much rich history to take part in and so many wonderful museums. The potential for field trips is amazing!! As for your question, I know there is a homeschool support group in Brooklyn. I'm not sure about the Bronx/Manhattan. I found the Brooklyn one through Meetup.com. Meetup is a great resource for, well, meeting people. If you haven't joined, I highly recommend it. You can do a search for the group you're interested in finding (i.e. homeschool), and it'll return the search results based on where you live. There are lots of other internet resources for homeschoolers as well. Good luck!!
