Ringworm - Romeoville,IL

I think my son has ringworm in his head (he has a bald spot and some bumps). I had some cream my doctor gave me and I am going to put it on his head (I'm tired of going to doctor and paying for 15 minutes of what I thought). Anyway what should I do for daycare? Do I put a bandage on the spot for week or is he ok?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Deana G was right about oral medicine. I took him and it was ring worm (thanks M.R. for putting me in check). He has to take medicine for at least 6 weeks. The doctor said he can go back but I think my babysitter wants him to start the medication and then he can come (after 24 hours).

Ringworm is contagious. It continues to be contagious until the 'ring' goes away. Before you send your child to daycare with ringworm, think of it this way: what if another child with ringworm went to daycare and spread it to your child and then you had to take him to the doctor, pay money, and then take time off of work because he's contagious? I'm going to guess you'd be annoyed at the least and possibly angry.

Call the daycare and ask them what their policy is on ringworm and follow their advice.

Ringworm is very contagious.
Even touching it... will spread with your fingers to anywhere else you then touch.
Do not take him to daycare... if the ringworm is not gone.
A bandage can come off.

In the store, you can also use "clotrimazole" cream... which is found in women's vaginal yeast creams. Get one that has at least 2% active ingredient in it.

Make sure it is ringworm. There is a form of eczema that looks very similar.

Ringworm is contagious. You need to report it to the preschool if he does, indeed, have it. I know it is irritating, but take him to the doctor and get it checked for sure. Then, as M.R. stated, contact the preschool and find out their policy.

Just wanted to let you know the cream for Athletes foot works for ringworm too.

We just went through a similar situation with my son. I ended up calling the doctor and getting a prescription cream because his was on his face. But the nurse at the doctor's office said that if it ended up in his hair, they have to take an oral pill. The creams won't work. And I had heard the same thing from several other people to make sure I got it taken care of without spreading to his hair. I would call the doctor and ask him again about this.
