I took my son to the doctor because he got ringworm on his face... anyway, I've never been around anyone with ringworm and I dont know where he got it, the doctor said it could be from anywhere. Do I need to wash his pillow and bedding every morning? Does it spread like that. I just got back into town today, spent hours at the quick care so he could go to school tomorrow, and forgot to ask those questions.

What can I do next?

Hi A., first what a pretty name you have. my daughter got a ring worm as well but it is true you can pick it up anywhere how sad is that.until your child has had the cream on it for a few days you should change and wash his bedding try and make sure if he touches his face to clean his hands after each time because if he does not do this he will just keep the infection going.if he shares a bed maybe stop that for a few days so another child doesnt catch it. our dr. says its about 48 hrs for it to be not contagious.but it depends on if he is on a cream or if he is on a liquid i would call the nurse and ask.

Ringworm was common when I was growing up. Nearly everyone I knew got it. Mother didn't wash bedding and the rash cleared up with meds and did not appear elsewhere.

And so I looked ringworm up in the Merck Manual of Medical Information and it doesn't mention washing anything except the face.

If you're faced with ringworm again, The Merck manual says you can use anti-fungal creams sold over the counter and not go to the doctor.

Later: Ironic! I went to the dr today about something else and learned that I have ringworm on my breast. It's not rough, crusted, or any of the things I think of as ringworm. It is round, rashy looking but smooth and lighter in color in the middle and growing. She said to use an over the counter antifungal cream. These are the creams that are used for athletes foot, jock itch, and vaginal yeast infections. If you have some left over from a yeast infection you can use that.

We've had experiences with ring worm. Yes, you should wash anything his face may have touched. And yes, it can be picked up from anywhere. For us, we had a cat that had it and we picked it up. Much different, but still had to wash everything we touched. Once you've been applying the medicine for a couple days, you shouldn't have to wash so much or so frequently. I'm sure if you Google it, you can find more, but do at least wash and change for a couple days after starting the medicine. Good luck!

ringworm spreads pretty easily, so yes, any bedding that touches his face should be washed daily. The same would be true if he washes his face and hands then dries them on a towel. Ringworm can be difficult to get rid of if you don't wash things enough to keep from spreading or recontaminating. Small children are especially difficult because they are likely to itch or touch the spot and then touch other things. Try to locate the source so as not to get the rest of the family contaminated. The Doctor was right, it can come from anything or anyone. Has he been exposed to a new pet? Does someone in the neighborhood have a new pet? When I was younger the whole neighborhood ended up with ringworm after loving on the neighbor's new kitten (by the time they figured out it was the cat everyone already had it). It is very common for school aged wrestlers to get it, especially if the mats are not cleaned correctly. You may not have needed that extra info, but hopefully it can jog your mind as to where it came from. Good luck!

If you want a full proof way of clearing up the ringworm and never having it return then buy some Tea Tree Oil! Melaleuca oil/tea tree oil is one of the best anti-fungal products on the market. www.melaleuca.com is a website you can purchase not only the oil, but cleaners, detergants, shampoos, soaps, toothpaste, and all of that good stuff. I highly recommend it. My family has really bad skin problems. We had a huge outbreak of ringworm, and athletes foot, and thrush. These things are all the same fungis attacking different parts of the body. So if you want to be rid of it all Melaleuca is the way to go. Trust me, in one day of cleaning everything with these products, i was able to save my family from all of these problems!! Good Luck!

My daughter had gotten that and they told me it comes from animals, such as cats. They told me I should have my cat checked for a skin infection, but there was nothing wrong with my cat. It started off as flea bites and spread and ended up being ring worm. Each doctor will tell you something different. They tried to tell me humans couldn't pass it to other humans...but when I researched it, it is possible.

Once the medicine is in affect (24 hours), you shouldn't need to worry about washing everything. I would wash it right away, start the meds, and wash it again in 24 hours. He should be noncontaminating by them.
