I have a very active 17 month old son, he LOVES to be outside. I am wanting suggestions on a riding toy. Ones I have looked at so far; little tykes cozy coupe, the car with the handle behind it that the parent pushes, tricycle, the train toys they can ride on with all the sound devices. My question is which one of these do you parents of older kids think will last him the longest? Most durable, etc...

What can I do next?

Personally I'd go with the old-school well built red tricycles, like the classic red radio flyer ones. I tend to steer clear of plastics, not that great for us or the environment and i'd wager you could hang onto the metal one for many years to come...just get an adjustable seat!

The coupe is great, we use it for our almost 2 yr old everytime we go somewhere in the neighborhood- the mailbox, park, pool, etc, it's GREAT- and my four yr old still tries to ride in it.
But your boy will also need a little ride-on for the fun of exercising, there are so many and they would all work fine, just look for one that's low to the ground and doesn't have pedals- one he scoots around on with his feet

Check out tootscoot.com. It's a mini bike w/o wheels. We got it for my son when he was 2 and he loves it. They start out just walking them around but after a few months he can now push and lift both legs. It teaches them to balance.

You could purchase some used riding toys and see which ones he enjoys the most. That way you are recycling.. and kids do not care if they are brand new at that age... Check out, Garage Sales, craigslist or send out an email to friends with older kids....
