Removing Vomit Smell from Carseat.

My daughter periodically gets carsick. She recently got sick and I cleaned the carseat with a steam cleaner removing it from anywhere visible. I used a few household cleaners. It has leather (or maybe fake leather...not sure) seat covers. The smell is still really strong every time we get into the car. It is all dry and LOOKS clean. Does anyone know what I could use to get rid of this smell? I really don't want to buy another carseat.
Thanks!

I'd echo the vinegar but would sprinkle w/baking soda first. It works on dog pee and poop!

maybe put a refrigerator box of baking soda in the car for a week or two? the kind w/the screen so it won't spill all over but the soda is exposed to the air.

J., You should try Sol-U-Mel 3 in 1 cleaner. It's a "green" cleaning agent, stain remover and miraculous odor eliminator sold by Melaleuca. People write in all the time saying it removed the ink from their couches and even eliminates cat odor, which I've found to be next to impossible. Go to Melaleuca.com and check it out! J.

I recommend the pet store enzyme cleaners for dog/cat pee/poop/throwup. Soak the fabric or surface with as much cleaner as there was throwup (if you can). Let it sit, then clean. For me it has gotten awful smells out of wood cabinetry (near the floor), carpet, clothing, etc. I don't know if it would discolor the leather, you may have to test an inconspicuous spot first. I hate those lingering smells!

I'm not sure how to remove it but I have advice on how to stop it. :) My neighbor has a son that gets car sick all the time too. (or used to) They started putting vaseline in his belly button and putting a band-aid over it. It sounds crazy but my neighbor swears it works. Her boy never gets car sick anymore.

Try Nature's Miracle. If it'll take out cat smells, it should take out... well, you know. It's available at pet stores.

Hi J. - I assume you are talking about your leather upholstery in your car? I had the very same thing happen. My little guy threw up all over his carseat, the door, the carpet and the leather upholstery. Yuck!!

I submitted a post about this on 3/21/08 if you wanted to look at the responses. I recommend using some kind of an enzyme cleaner. I used Folex brand cleaner to spray down the door and wipe the seats but I couldnt get the smell out of the carpet because it had soaked through. I ended up going with a pet store recommendation. Watch for hidden stains under the seat, etc.

You might try sunshine - it is a good sterilizer. Put the car seat out in the sun for awhile. Can you take apart the entire thing? We did that an unfortunately none of the pads have ever fit right since, but it doesn't smell...

You may have to take your child's carseat completely apart to clean it since you may have some hiding somewhere. I recommend using Sol-U-Mel. I have a dog and two kids. All three tend to have some sort of accident not only in the car, but in the house. It gets the stains out beautifully, and also gets rid of any nasty smells. Not only that, it's 100% naturally based so it's safe to use around your daughter! It's in a concentrated bottled, and you just either use it straight or dilute it out. Let me know if you have any questions or would like to try it.

I hope you find something that works!

Sincerely,
Tricia

Hi J.,

I've never cleaned a car seat like this, but a 1/2 vinegar and 1/2 water solution removes pet odors (not stains, though) from carpet. I'd try it on a hidden area to test for discoloration. It sounds like your seat cover is porous, explaining why it smells bad but looks clean? You could saturate the seat with the solution and then use your steam cleaner to remove the liquid.

p.s. Vinegar is my new favorite cleaning solution. Adding baking soda and hydrogen peroxide to your arsenal, any type dirt/lime/spills/stains have no chance! (I really like Zout, too, it's magic for removing laundry stains.)

I had to take the cover off and wash ours, its not as intimidating as it looks to put it back together again, pay attention to what you did to take the cover off, and you will have little problems putting it back on, it was honestly the only way I could clean ours, we tried it all!
