Hi, just wanted to get some info from those of you who have remodeled your kitchen. How much did you spend and what did you have done? I am trying to get an idea of how much kitchen remodels cost. We are looking to replace the flooring, reface the cabinets, paint the kitchen, put up a new backsplash (tile), etc. Any ideas of how much this could be?

What can I do next?

I had Sears laminate my cabinets and I am well-pleased. I painted myself and have not done the floor yet. I have a fairly big kitchen and it cost about $11,000 for the cabinets. I priced around and for a good job, that is reasonable. For the rest of it, you are looking at $5000 or so more.

Go to Home Depot. They will design it for you for free and give you an estimate... It's something to start with.
My kitchen remodel is probably totally different than yours AND we live on opposite coasts.

We haven't done anything to our place yet, but we're looking around $7,000 to redo ours--with as much work done by us as possible. We are redoing everything as our house is 110 years old...including bracing the floor and cutting a hole in the one wall to put in a bar. We have friends who will be building our cabinets for us, and my family owns a furniture store so the flooring will be purchased at cost. We had a contractor quote us $12,800 for everything.

We demolished our whole kitchen and replaced all: cabinets, floors, appliances, lights, counters, paint, etc... We spent about $20k. We did not do any work ourselves. There were quite a few smaller things that came up which we didn't anticipate, needing to replace part of the dry wall that got damaged when the kitchen was demo'd, the expense of the cabinet and drawer pulls and sink and faucet, etc. Hope that helps.

We completey re-did our kitchen 5 years ago...gutted the room and replaced drywall with green board, new cabinets, countertops, flooring and appliances. Clearly our re-model was far more extensive than you're planning. While Home Depot may create a design for you for free, DON'T hire them. I have several friends who made that mistake and projects that should have taken less than 3 months took over a year to complete. One actually had to hire someone else to finish. Cost will be determined by the materials you choose to use, whether or not you are replacing appliances, etc. We sub contracted our work out and did some of the work ourselves. Signature Kitchen & Bath Design handled the kitchen design and cabinetry for us. There was no charge for the design which was provided regardless of whether or not we purchased cabinetry from them. You may find that you update a portion of your kitchen, only to discover something you're planning on leaving alone no longer suits you, a discovery we made when we thought we would keep our refrigerator to discover it looked old and worn compared with the other new appliances. You'll save money by painting the kitchen yourself, which isn't difficult at all. If you stick to the plan you've stated, costs should run between $5000 and $15,000 depending on materials. Have fun with it! Once we decided to take the srep, we had a blast selecting materials.

Depending on how much of the work you do yourself and how much you can bargain shop etc I would guess between $5000 and $15000 as well. Because you're not knocking down walls etc that makes things a lot easier. If you like the look of granite but not the cost there are large granite tiles that can be used for countertops with a very thin grout line that gives all the look of granite without the cost or the difficult of machining etc. There are some great discount tile places to look for backsplashes and stuff. If you're in the San Jose area, there are tons of places off Brokaw Rd and Junction Ave to look around. For flooring, laminate is a less expensive choice than hardwood and MUCH easier to take care of. Great for kids and dogs. For appliances, check out University Electric in Santa Clara. great selection, good prices and they've been in business for like 100 years.

good luck, have fun!

Just a couple of things I wanted to point out - I think location and cost are related as well. I live in SF and the contractors I've spoken too have quoted me much higher than some of the prices for tiling listed here. Our kitchen is 150 sq feet (small) and I've been told the backsplash will cost at least $800 to $1000 before the cost of tile, and the installation for the floor and backsplash together is around $2800. I've talked to a few different contractors and sadly I haven't found anything cheaper than that. I will say, we need to replace both the floor and the subfloor so that could have something to do with the cost. When you add that to the cabinet refinishing, cost of tile, countertops, it adds up quickly. We're getting our cabinets refinished (as opposed to refaced) by this company: kitchensmadenew.com and so far they've been great... granted the work starts tomorrow but they've been nice to deal with so far and they have a countertop guy that has quoted us at $2200 for granite. I've heard that Ikea cabinets can be cheaper than refacing as well. I know a couple of people who went that route and it didn't scream Ikea to me. Good luck!

Hello Busy, We spent 7 months on the kitchen 3 years ago. Part of the reason was becasue of dishonest workers."But We were blessed" with the greatest of men to do what needed done and cleaned up thier mess and I would be glad to give you the names if you'd like. They are honest, hardworking, and trust worthy in fact we were comfortable giving them a key to let themselves in when we were not home. We spent about $10,000.00 With us doing part of the work tearing down walls and my husband did the wireing.. That is with new walls, moving walls, and replacing the cabnits, new sink and appliances and the most beautiful hardwood floors!! We checked out the Ikea cabnets but found that many will not stand up to the test of time. The granite cost 1800.00 .

We updated our kitchen 8 years ago and it cost about $13,000.
It all started with switching our electric cook top to gas. Which lead to granite counter tops, new sink and faucet, marble backsplash, new oven and build in microwave. Cooktop, oven and microwave were all Dacor appliances.
We opted not to resurface our cabinets, because they still looked good and I am lucky to have a TON of cabinets. I thought about changing my cabinet knobs, just haven't. I did all the painting myself so it was just the cost of the paint and my time.

For 10x10 kitchen, I required $2000 for kitchen cabinet, paint and other tiles required $3000. So total I invested $5000, and it was remodeled nicely. Check out here for more details: http://www.thertastore.com

The kitchen will be your most expensive room to remodel, but you will also get the most use out of the remodel...so good choice! I am in the construction industry and here is what i've found through experience:

I would say if you pianted and did some of the stuff yourself, you could easily do this for $5000. here is a little breakdown of what to expect:

1. Paint will be about $150 (buy only)
2. All NEW cabinets (I know you said you were resurfacing though) = $1500
3. New tiles backlash = ?? at most $500 i would think.
4. New countertops (if you decided to do them) = $1000
5. Flooring (not tile) = $1500 installed

Appliances is where the main money is, so if you are just doing a simple "beauty" makeover I think you can easily do this for about $2000- $5000.

Good luck! And have fun : - ) !!

How exciting! It's a big job for a DIY, but what a feeling of accomplishment when you walk into your kitchen in the morning and you know you did it (or most of it.) I completed our make over for just about $12,000. That included in order of most expensive to least expensive:
- new tile for floor and blackspash (We took out the old laminate and tile on the blacksplash and hired installing the new tile we chose out to an expert)
- new appliances (stove/oven/dishwasher/refrig @ Sears - watch for sales)
- Painting the cabinets, installing glass in some and putting on new knobs (really modernized it)
- Painting the walls
- New baseboards
- New electrical outlets

Have fun!

It was a little more work because we did all the things we could do, and really shopped for bargains, but what a great feeling of satisfaction to walk into the kitchen the morning after it was all "complete" !
