My 10 week old has been diagnosed with reflux and the spit up is crazy. This kid soaks herself multiple times a day...pretty much every feeding. She is already on relux meds and on hypoalergenic formula. She also has really bad backed up gas that I try to control with gripe water. Lately she has been really difficult at feeding time. I know she is hugary but once she starts eating she slows down and then just plays with the nipple. She is always uncomfortable when she eats and I have voiced this to several Dr.s now and they all tell me that since she is gaining weight...which she is in the 95th percential for weight...she is not in any danger. I guess I am wondering if I should talk to the Dr. ( meaning her GI) about changing her formula to the Enfamil one that is for relux. Also has anyone else been through this? How long does the large amount of spit up last? This child is a very happy baby until she eats and then it takes me a good hour to make her comfortable again...and then I have to do it all over again.

What can I do next?

I second K P....all 3 of our boys had reflux and our oldest was also lactose intolerant. we put him on the target brand lactose free formula and his spitting up dropped down a lot from the first bottle. dont worry about trying the store brand formula, they all have the same nutritional value, it is mandated by law, and you can look at the cans and see they are the same. I know how scary it is, with my oldest it looked like he was spitting up over half a bottle at a time. but he gained great, he is now 2 1/2 and almost 30 pounds. my 9 month old twins werent as bad with their reflux, but one of the twins spits up more than the other.

also she may have colic, my oldest did. it was tough, but she'll make it through!

All 3 of my boys had this. They were on Zantac and special formula as well. The doctor had me put cereal in thier bottles. A lot of it. One teaspoon per ounce. The thicker formula stays down a little better. Ultimate Aloe juice helps the reflux itself so their bellies don't hurt as much. All my boys are off the zantac thanks to the Aloe Juice. Here is what I used.
I reccommend the strawberry kiwi. Babies love it. 2 ounces a day will really help.

Good luck.

Hang in there mama I know how hard it is to see your baby girl in pain. My daughter suffered form severe reflux until around 15 months old. She was on Zantac by 4 weeks old and continued it till 18 months. We went through about 8 different formulas before finding one that worked for her so try to be patient. We ended up using Enfamil AR lactose free formula. I suggest finding an allergist to test your daughter, this may save your baby some pain and you some headache in trying to find the right formula. Also go get some Mylicon much better than gripe water for the gas (i still use it on my kids that are now 2 and 3 years old)

I feel your pain!! Both of my kids had this problem. My dd grew out of it about 8-9 months for the most part, but she didn't lose her milk sensitivity until about 13 months. hers was not diagnosed and so we had to make do with what we could. My 4 month old son takes zantac and prevacid. I also use 1-2 ml of mylanta which helps with gas and acid burn. I didn't have these with dd and it is SO much easier this time!! I also recommend Hyland's Colic tablets, can get at Fred Meyer/QFC or Diapers.com and some Targets. I LOVE these things.

For the spit up I recommend a naked baby as much as possible. It saves on laundry and just have a blanket ready to catch the spit up. Do you keep her sitting up a lot? We used the Graco Sweetpeace Soother for a bed because they need to be at an inclined angle to help with the acid. Usually its caused by the flap of the esphogus not closing correctly and they out grow it about a year.

As for eating, have you tried a latex nipple and binky? My kids would not eat with silicone, even though they tried, they hated them and wouldn't eat and then would cry because they were hungry. I highly recommend the playtex dropins with the latex nipple. You might be able to find these in the store, or you can order them online from playtex. (I go to Target and Kmart). These really help with air and colic if she does have it. I think the spit up lasts until they get more vertical and walking. Solid foods can be tricky too. She is probably going to be sensitive to any milk products and maybe soy. DD could have soy but DS can't. It just depends. Just know that they will get better, but what you are describing with the bottles is EXACTLY what mine did with silicone. I hope this gives you peace, to know there is a light at the end of the tunnel, and it could be a whole lot worse. If you need some other tips, on facebook there is the fussy baby site, and they are good at giving support to moms who are in this situation.

Both of my kids went through this. I hate to tell you this, but keep a stock of bibs until she is walking, that is how long it took us to stop the throw up, and it got worse while they were crawling because of the pressure on their bellies. My daughter was on hypoallergenic formula, which was pricey. She was very picky and brand specific, so she refused anything but Similac. Watch the position you feed her in, I found that I accidentally would hold them in a way that would put extra pressure on their stomachs. Keep her upright after feeding. My SIL feeds her daughter propped up in a boppy pillow and leaves her there for a good 10 to 20 minutes after because that is the only way the child tolerates the feeding. She doesn't burp her and says that burping makes it worse. I would speak to the GI doctor. Just because she is gaining weight doesn't mean she should be uncomfortable. And many times the babies mistake the pain for hunger and eat even more than they should which makes the problem worse. There are prescription formulas (and many times insurance will pay for them) if the medications aren't working.

My son had horrible reflux, too. He was on Prevacid at around 4 weeks and would spit up 20-30 times a day. He had a really hard time gaining weight and was in the 1st percentile for quite awhile. For us, the spit up started to slow down at around 8 months, and was pretty much over by 10 months. We stopped the Prevacid at that time. Although now at 3 1/2, we think he may still be having some reflux. Hang in there...it is rough, but it will end!
