Recurrent Kidney Infections

My daughter just turned one yesterday and today she came down with her second kidney infection. After the first infection we did the rounds with the urologist who preformed an ultrasound and a vcug and determined that reflux was not causing the infections. UTI seem to run in the family, I get about 2 a year and my 11 year old niece has already had 13 bladder infections ( she also sees a urologist, and has had a vcug and has no reflux). My nephew also has similar issues. Does anyone have any experience with this? My GYN can not get to the root of my UTI's and none of the children's urologist can seem to find a reason why they get them. It is highly unusual for a 1 year old to get a UTI and know my daughter has already had two. We wipe from front to back, take no baths with bubble bath, add lemon juice and cranberry juice to our water... is there anything else we can be doing? In general we are a very healthy family and I can not stand to see my little girl sick.

What can I do next?

She needs lots of water, cranberry to drink and change diaper brands a few times to see. i have issues with the scents on them. If you use wash cloths and towels, use perfume and dye free brands. The same goes for toilet paper. Helps me and whole family.

Hi M.,
I'm so sorry to hear that your little one is going through this. When I was pregnant w/ my daughter they did an ultra sound at 23 weeks and found she had an enlarged kidney. They monitored the rest of my pregnancy and when she was born they immediately put her on antibiotics so she wouldn't get any kidney infections. We live in CT and there are no pediatric urologists in our area. They sent us to Dr. Israel Franco in Westchester county New York, he's the best. She had her first VCUG at 4 weeks old (it was miserable) and all the other tests that go with it. They continued to monitor her and finally at 20 months she had to have surgery. In her case, her ureter didn't go into her bladder. They had to reconstruct it and put it in her bladder. The surgery was done at the Children's Hospital at Westchester, they were wonderful. I don't know the cause of what is going on w/ your daughter, but I would suggest if you are in the area try to see Dr. Franco. I have 5 other friend's kids (here in CT and one in NJ) who also see Dr. Franco b/c he is so excellent at what he does. I really hope they find out what's causing this problem for your daughter. Oh, my daughter is now 4 years old and completely cured.
Good luck,
Alexis

As a child I had frequent kidney infections as well. It was found that one of my kidneys was enlarged which I believe is quite common. I also need to have my eurethra stretched since the opening was too small and that was done when I was amost 6 years old and seemed to help. I eventually grew out of getting them.

Hi M.!
I'm so sorry to hear your little one is so sick...I had recurrent kidney infections when I was young so I know how sick they make you. Have you considered seeing a nephrologist (kidney specialist) instead of just a urologist? HOpe that she's feeling better soon and that you get to the root of the problem quickly!

My daughter had her first UTi at the age of 2. We had sonograms done of her bladder and kidney with no results. What I found worked for us was to give my daughter a Cranibarrier pill it has Cranberries, Blueberries and bearberries - she sucked on one a day and has not had any more UTI's or bladder infections. I also switched all my home products to products that contain no caustic chemicals - I believe the switch of laundry detergent and her body washed made the biggest difference. You are welcome to contact me - if you want to know more. I hope you find a solution quickly. I was also suffered from re-occurring infections - they are very painful so I felt horrible everytime my daughter got one. The switch has also helped me be free from them for the last 3 years.
