My thirteen year old son has CF.
The test that is used to screen for CF is called a sweat chloride test. In basic terms it is a coil that collects sweat. A high concentration of salt is a positive. The test is not painful nor is it invasive. It must be done by a facility that performs these tests for accuracy. I am not sure where you are located but DeVos Children's hospital in GR has a great CF care center.
The Cystic Fibrosis Foundation has a wealth of accurate up to date information cff.org
Both parents have to be carriers of the defective gene, then you have a one in four chance of a child having CF. Direct linked cousins have higher rate of being carriers/having CF if it is in the family.
Please feel free to email me with any questions, I will do my best to answer them. The medications and treatments have come a long way in combating CF.
