Bullfrog makes a deet free insect repellent that is also sunscreen.
Campho phenique works well on bug bites.
My dd is covered with bug bites from Grandmas. Are there any good (preferably organic) insect repellent that don't have deet or harsh chemicals? My dd is sensitive to strong smells (PDD-NOS) so Avon's SKin So Soft is out of the question. Links welcome.
Oh, and any good way to treat bug bites?

We use Bullfrog and it works great!
Burt's Bees works well, and they also make an after bite remedy. The repellant smells strongly of citronella though :/
I got Bug Out from Whole Foods. It was not cheap, it not super expensive either. Works well for us.
Our daughters daycare gave us this information.. Be sure to spray it on the pressure points. Ankles, behind the knees, inside the elbow and on the neck.
Get a spray bottle and fill it with one cup of water and one tablespoon of vanilla extract. Shake it up and instant mosquito spray, .
Jason's Quit Buggin Me Spray has worked well for us. It's natural and organic. I can't figure out how to paste a link on my tablet, sorry. We have treated B. bites in the past, with calendula cream.
My mom (who is outside horse backriding constantly) swears by clove oil. I have not tried it yet... but I'm searching the same as you... I've tried Burts Bees, and another natural brand that claims to be great for kids... and I have found faults in both (especially the second one.. Burts Bees was a bit better)
I have also used the California Baby bug spray all summer long. I'm a serious bug magnet, myself, and I have not had ONE bite this summer. It is on the expensive side, but it has worked great for me. I also buy mine from Target. For me, it's worth the investment.
Bath and body works Twilight Woods body spray works GREAT for mosquitoes and gnats. I think it's because of the vanilla. My family swears by it. I'm a mosquito magnet but this works wonderfully for me and my girls.
Edit: Just re-read your question. This is probably out because your strong smells issue. Sorry!!
We used Cactus Juice repellant this summer. My DD liked the smell so she was good about putting it on at summer camp and it seemed to work very well.
Someone just told me to rub a dryer sheet on my skin -- haven't tried it yet, but they swore it works!
We spray Listerine out of a spray bottle. Seriously. It's not 100% effective but it doesn't seem to be any worse and I am a serious bug magnet. And, we smell kind of nice! I guess if we needed to we could squirt in our mouth after a cookout, too. :)
California Baby makes one that is all natural, no chemicals, non-toxic and deet free. I don’t remember how much it was probably over 5 dollars. I love this stuff, it works great and smells good and it is not greasy. I get ours at Target in the baby section.
If your child already has bites you can try vinegar or tea tree oil.
Burt's Bees has a repellant that we like. The lemon grass scent is pretty strong, but.... For after, I apply topical Benadryl. It's expired (last year), so it's not too strong, and all he needs is a little bit.
badger balm!
