I was laid off on 2/22/08, due to "lack of work." I have had a really really hard time dealing with this, this past week. Especially since things between my fiancee and i have become a little more stressful. He constantly worries about money, even though he makes enough in 1 paycheck to pay all of our major bills. How can i get him to relax? and get him off my back, he knows i'm going to be drawing unemployment until i can build my private clientèle up, but i don't think that he realizes that the money i was bringing in doing massage part time really was just extra money. helping us to save up money for a rainy day. i don't really know what my question is, i'm just really confused right now. not sure what to think, i've never been laid off before. if anyone has any advise that would be wonderful.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank you all for your wonderful advise. But i've decided to stay at home and just try to get a hold of some of my old clients from the salon. And just enjoy the time i have with my son... and get him potty trained (eek)

Point out all of the savings to having you at home. Anytime I ever worked it seemed we spent more money than saved. Buying convience foods because you have no time to cook, childcare, gas, lunches can add up if you think about it. We have been living off one paycheck for nearly our whole marriage. It can be done and living comfortable is easily done. Just try to focus on the positive. I love being home with the kids and welcoming daddy home with a smile on our faces and a clean happy home for him to come home to relieves alot of the stress. Learning to cut corners can be rewarding. Another thing my husband enjoys is being able to plan family things to do without having to juggle 2 schedules. One year I worked after he got out of the service actually hurt us by bumping us up into another tax bracket...lol Don't let the outside world fool you...you really can live on one income!!!!!!!!

Hi. I saw your message. I have been laid off before. It is the most awful feeling. The bad part for me was my hubby had been laid off 3 weeks before I was. We lived off of nothing and I was preg. at the time. I would suggest putting an ad in the paper for more clients but with massage you can also do what I do. I sell Avon and make enough to suffice my hubby working more hours. I am a stay at home mom with 2 kids and we were totally broke. I couldn't afford these "businesses" because they want so much money to start and they have obligations. With Avon it is wonderful. 10.00 to start nothing more, you can get your own website, no contracts, no obligations to buy anything, everyone knows the company, you can sell anywhere in the world with your website, you don't have a minimum order. If you don't place one it doesn't matter. If it was not for Avon I don't know what I would have done, they saved me. I am not claiming that you are going to make millions but there are alot of women that make very good money, including myself, because everyone knows Avon and their products. If you want to talk about it, I live in central NC please call me at ###-###-#### or email me at ____@____.com or visit my website at youravon.com/jryan3086. thanks

It seems, from your message, that you have two issues that are of concern to you and I may be able to help a little.

First, the issue with your fiance. I think that communication is the key. What I always do when my husband is concerned about money or we need to take a look at the finances for some other reason, is get a piece of paper and jot down all our expenses and go over them with him. If he is not comfortable with your finances, then ask him questions to find out what the problem is in his mind. Maybe there is or was something that he wanted to do with the extra money you were bringing in or his extra money.

Second, you may want to take a look at work at home opportunities or home based business opportunities. I can help you with both of these flexible means of bringing in more money and setting yourself up for early retirement.

Contact me at 877-736-7630 or ###-###-#### or by email at ____@____.com wishes and God bless,

Have you considered a home based business? I never thought I would do anything like that, but I joined lia sophia in September 2005 and it is now the primary income in our home. I definitely had no intention of that happening. But, now I can enjoy being at home with my kids and attending all their functions, without having to ask if I can take off to do so. It is such a small investment and alot of fun. How many people can say that they go to work at a party and play drss up in jewelry. Let me know if that might help!

L., I certainly hope things are going well for you! I have an option you could take a look at. I own my own business through Arbonne International and work about 20 hours a month. It helped to supplement my husband's income and has now taken over my previous income working full time as a nurse. If you are interested give me a buzz ____@____.com Working as a massage therapist can really boost the results of this business. We have aromatherapy and more. Also, we have a Wednesday night call with our National VP who explains the business in great detail! Just let me know and hope things are going well!

Could you post an ad on Craigslist so you can begin finding new clients? I think that for all men, they want to make sure they can provide for their families. Just the fact that you had a job and he was not the only income was less stressful. Now it is all on him really and that in itself is very stressful for a man. My only advice is that we all have been there at one time or another and there is nothing that makes it easier unfortunately. Just the fact that you are going to continue to find a job and are sensitive and aware to the fact of how he feels can help. Good luck, it really will all work outp- I have been there!

I sympathize with you as one of my best friends is a massage therapist and every times her husband moves for his job (about every other year!!) she has to rebuild her clientel. I am sure it is stressful for both of you. Maybe you can put your budget on paper and make a date to look over it with your fiance so he feels more comfortable with it in the meantime. Do you have a business card made? If not that might be something to "show him" you are working on your business as well.

What do you charge anway? I have been thinking I might need a massage....do you do deep massage? I am a physical therapist and have some very tight spots. I have not found anyone who does a deep massage since I have been here...just the fluffy stuff!

Also, if you live in the Durham are and if you are interested in doing any childcare in the meantime just for extra cash I am in desparate need of someone to watch my girls (ages 2 and 4)at my house on Wednesdays for the second half of April and the month of May (about 6 Wednesdays total). I can't pay what a massage therapist makes but I can pay pretty well and have a great yard and lots of toys.
