Really Want to Stay Home with My 3 Girls. Would Love to Work P/T from Home.

I am getting ready to go back to work after having my third daughter. I've been off since August and have enjoyed my time off and am really having a hard time wondering how I am going to juggle 3 kids and a full time job. Ideally I'd like to be able to work P/T from home but there are so many scams out there and finding a legit company can be daunting. So I figured I reach out to the mamapedia family to find out what other moms have done to bring in some income while being able to care for the kiddos. My background is outside sales. Thanks fellow Mamas!

Hi Angie,

As someone who has worked from home for most of my adult life, I can tell you to steer clear from any MLM's or anyone trying to get you to sign up!

It's hard to find something from home that can generate a substantial amount of income. I work from home, but I do a variety of things to make a decent income: In 2007 I took a bookkeeping course and started a bookkeeping business. All my clients were obtained through Craigslist ads, then word of mouth. I still do books for a few clients, but my passion is children and education. So in 2008 I started a local preschool directory website driven by advertising and paid preschool listings, in 2010 I wrote a book about going to kindergarten and started another local preschool directory, and just recently I teamed with the nation's largest au pair agency as a childcare coordinator. I'm passionate about educating families about childcare options. 95% of my time, I work from home.

My best advice is to start poking around. Check out Craigslist - that has been a great resource for me! Don't answer any ads that offer amazing financial results. A good work from home business or job will not be a great rich quick scheme. Craigslist is where I got the idea for my preschool directory, where I found the bookkeeping course that I took to start my business, and how I teamed up with Cultural Care, the au pair agency I work with.

All my websites are listed below if you want to peek at them. If you have any questions you'd like to ask me about what I do or how I found out about any of my income sources, I'm happy to help. Bottom line, though, is to find what is right for you.

Best wishes to you and your family! And Merry Christmas!

start a daycare! With 3 children, you have access to other families who can get the word out. I've been doing this for 8 1/2 years now & appreciate fully being able to stay home.....to be available for my son (14y.o) before & after school, holidays, & vacations. There are 2 drawbacks, tho: not paying into social security & other benefits such as insurance/paid time-off AND being tied to the house & not able to attend school functions during the day.

But the bonuses are great if you love working with children. I always tell people: I'd rather change a diaper & be in a roomful of kids.....than working in an office with witchy women! The + side for me is that I thoroughly enjoy teaching children. We rarely watch tv....maybe 1/2 hr 2-3 times each week. That means these kids get <2 hours tv over a 50 hour time period. I consider that one of my greatest achievements! We PLAY & learn & sing/dance & do projects. Our time is filled.

One of the greatest compliments I ever received was from one of my daycare moms. She said, "S., I just realized that you don't spend your time doing laundry or playing on the computer. You don't rely on the tv. You actually spend the time with my daughter, making sure she is happy & learning at the same time. I have never, ever had this ....even with my 2 older children. Thank you." That was about 5 years ago & still means a lot to me! Good Luck & hope this helps.

I work for a virtual company, 5 years now, and it's just like any other company but we all work out of home offices. A lot of our part time positions ended up filled by moms going back to work and wanting their work hours to fit into the kids schedules.
There are job websites, like Monster, that post just work from home jobs and even on main job sites you'll see location as home office sometimes.
I love it and have been really lucky to have this while my kids are young.
Good luck to you.

Have you talked with your current employer about working PT for them? I know that is not at home, but I found working PT for my current employer really helped me deal with my new baby. I was able to do PT for a year after returning from leave which helped me adjust tremendously. Was able to BF more and deal with baby's schedule. The other benefit was the pay was very much more than any "PT from home" thing would have been. Also ask about working remotely from home some of the time. If most of your work could be done over phone and Internet, there may not be a need for you to be at your office all the time.

How about sales support? This seems like a perfect job for inhome. Or something where you can cold call and/or get and qualify leads. IF you are good at what you do it is so worth a try. Do an internet search but also think about companies around you that could use you. And then ask for a quick meeting to run your proposal by them. you could even start your own company for this kind of thing. Maybe even like a manufacturers rep.

If you really think about it I bet you can come up with something. Sales is a prefession that can be carried over to almost every industry.

Also consider job sharing with another SAHM.

you should also scour the internet for inspirational stories of moms who have started their own businesses....I am sure there are websites dedicated to this.

good luck...and rememeber one of the biggest rules in sales....the answer is always no if you don't ask!

The thing with mary kay, avon and the like is that you have to find baby sitters to go out and canvas, do parties and deliver stuff - they are not true work at home.
I tried amazons mturk, and if you work hard at it you can make some money - especially the transcription hits.
also west at home is always looking for people.

Have you thought about trying out a local company that might need a sales rep? My husband and I run our own business that is an embroidery, screen printing, promotional products and rhinestone company. We work from home, my husband is the rep, but we also have a rep for us that lives in a different town. I know a LOT of others in this industry that have sales reps, and you could totally make your own hours. Find a company that fits that needs a sales rep, and doesn't mind you doing it from home.

I've tried the Mary Kay thing and it just is really hard to do. Mary Kay ladies are a dime a dozen, as are things like Premiere Jewelry, Scentsy, Pampered Chef, so sometimes it's REALLY hard to build up a customer base. But, if you have the right personality then you can do it. It wasn't for me, but it might be for you.

Check out "31" handbags/accessories. I have two friends that have just started selling it and it is a great product. You don't have to keep an inventory, they will set you up w/ a website. You can have people host parties for you, set something up at the kids school so they know you are selling it, have "catalog" parties, etc. It is very popular here in Florida, so if you have never heard of it in your area, I would jump on it and start selling! The more you work it, the more you make.
I do not sell it, but have bought many pieces and women go crazy for this stuff!
Good Luck!

i second the suggestion to try to work part-time for your current company or another that will go for it. part-time is a great compromise, and working from home is way over-rated. if it's a real job with potential to make decent money it will require focus and professionalism which is very hard to attain when you're up to your hips in legos and cookie dough. you'll still have to hire a mother's helper if you want to make a realistic stab of it. and working part-time will give you just a little *professional* outside-the-house time so that you stay sharp and competitive in a sharp competitive field.
good luck!

Hands down anyone and everyone should have a Direct Sales company business of some kind that fits with their passion /lifestyle. You have control over the income that you make, the schedule that you want/need, and the tax write offs are huge. Now with that, I would like to share about my business and what I've loved about it for almost nine years now.

Sensaria Natural Bodycare has a product line that has been around since the 1970's, with naturally based ingredients that the whole family can and should use, and everyone has skin so reorders are happening and often.

What makes Sensaria different from other companies and their products is how the products are made: All made in the USA, in small batches, never boiled, double steamed distilled water, finest ingredients AND what no one else offers, a one-year guarantee that the company takes care of, not the representative.

Other things to look at is that Sensaria takes all credit cards and does not charge the rep for the charges, pays for all the hostess programs and gifts, no inventory or additional purchases of products required when you start up (in fact you can earn a $225, $250, and $275 shopping sprees in your first three months) AND you have your business the way that fits your life so that means NO minimum requirements each month.

With little kids I became very concerned about the allergies and asthma that my daughter was dealing with and with the research that I did, I found that most of the skin care products out there exasperated her problems. With Sensaria's products, she was able to take a bath every day if she wanted and for an hour if she wanted (she wanted to) and her skin/eczema was better for it, in fact healed. My acne and scars cleared up, my husband's dandruff and dry skin are gone. My son, typical, no skin problems so no comments there. These products were developed by a scientist who had severe allergies and sensitivities so just about anyone can use them. They are not greasy and do not smell perfumey. No petroleum, no sodium laurel sulfates, no pthalates, no dyes, and everything is listed even under 2%.

As for having to go out of the house, sometimes you need a break as a mom and I schedule my times that my kids can be with my husband, when they are in school, or they are at a friend's house. Because of our guarantee and the product line, you can also do this completely from your home without ever leaving it. It's up to you and me helping you to figure out what works for your family.

If you would like to know more about Sensaria, as a customer for the products, as a host to earn free products and have a fun spa experience with the girlfriends, or as an earning opportunity as a representative, know that I will not hunt you down nor stock you until you sign but I would be happy to offer any information and answer of your questions.

Job sharing is popular around here. Also telecommuting from home. Sales support for an outside rep would be great as well and can be done at home.

I hire accounting help which is a home based business and the girl is great. We might meet once a month, everything else, we do via email and phone.

You'll get solicited from every MLM deal on mamapedia. If that's your thing go for it.... MLM's are not that popular in our area....people steer clear of those puching their wares like a slick salesman.

Good luck

I'd be very careful about things like Pampered Chef or Tastefully Simple or Silpada or Mary Kay - they are good companies with good products, but you have minimums and you have a niche market - only women, and not products that people need every month! You need a company with products needed by everyone (kids, adults, men, women) and which are consumable. The company must be a member of the Direct Selling Association, which is an invitation-only group of just 200 of the best companies. Members must adhere to strict standards of business ethics, have open books, etc. You want a company that trades on the stock exchange - again, open books. You want a stable company so you know it's rock solid. You want to be sure that they aren't going to start putting their products in stores - if they do, you will have no business left!

I do all of these things with a top company that makes patented nutritional products. They have a phenomenal humanitarian mission feeding hungry people world-wide, and have won many business awards for their corporate social responsibility. Every needs supplements now (says the American Medical Association) because our soils and depleted, our air polluted, and our diets deficient. Patented products are rare because of the research required so we really have the market cornered. Wellness is the next $1 trillion industry, and direct sales is growing because people have been disappointed by corporate America. The training in our company is free and ongoing, available on line and by phone as well as in person. You don't have to be a nutritionist - just a caring person! People come from all walks of life, and we have one of the highest distributor retention rates because we have the top compensation plan in direct sales. I'd be more than happy to talk with you and give you a lot more info so you can decide if it's right for you.

I am going to be totally honest with you. 3 kids is a lot harder than 2. And the more kids you have the harder it is to maintain your home and sanity if you are working. Personally, I don't even know how full time working moms do it without help, I can't imagine how hard that must be. I can barely keep up my household and I AM home all day.
We have sacrificed a lot in the past 14 years so that either myself or my husband could be at home with our kids and they wouldn't have to go to daycare. With the first kid, my husband worked Dominoes Pizza delivery at night after working all day at his full time job, so I could stay home and breastfeed until that baby was a year old. Then I worked waiting tables in our friend's restaurant for 3 years until I was pregnant with #2. Waiting tables was definitely humbling considering I have a graduate degree and was pre-med in undergrad. But it was totally worth it to be able to be home during the day with my son until my husband got home, and the money wasn't too bad either for a part time job.
Since the second child was born, we have run a surfing lesson business. We discovered we could make pretty decent money doing what we love, teaching people the sport of surfing. That one kind of fell into our lap, because we did some charity surfing lesson events, and the demand just followed. Now it's at the point where we get out of it what we put into it. I had to scale down substantially the past 3 years due to a serious medical trauma and also baby #3, but we are ready to build it up again this summer.
It isn't ever going to make us wealthy, but we get by, and my kids have their mom at home. And I have my sanity and joy to get to be with them.

I hear your heart as a mother wanting to be home with her kids, and I really believe it's the best thing possible for a family.
I would highly recommend you pray and ask God to provide you the wisdom and resources to be able to stay home :)
Dig deep and think out of the box about what you might love to do and have the talent / resources to do on your own.
You won't necessarily be wealthy, and you might have to make some changes in your lifestyle and spending habits, but it will be well worth it.
I will be praying for you.

I'm managing our apartments. It brought our rent down by half and really isn't that much work -- trips to the bank, calling a general contractor for repairs, etc. I was working part-time outside of our home for a while but the stress it was causing my daughter and me as a result simply wasn't worth it. I've picked up other odd jobs along the way -- dog-sitting, baby-sitting, house-sitting, etc. I know some people are able to get modeling/acting jobs for their kids. I know one mom that writes professionally from home, but she just lost her job recently. It doesn't seem like there are many good options out there... but you don't get a second chance at raising your kids so I guess you have to sort out what is the best you can do for your family.

None of the other moms have suggested it but I have 2 friends that work for Girls Night Out...the 'fun party people'. Both of them are very conservative who's older kids go to private school. They wear jeans and t-shirts all week and have a couple of parties a month and make lots of money. It's a neat way to have grown up adult time with other gals. My friends are successful because they are just regular moms who are doing a party for other moms. They don't use raunchy language or talk about sex in a vulgar way. All of us need to keep our intimate relationships strong and most of the products are just fun things to spice it up. I have attended parties that were mostly single girls doing jello shooters and that's not really my thing but helping women just like me to find ways to make your intimate time fun! It's so easy as a mom to put your physical attention 100% on your kids and lose out on the fun with your partner.
